Trump versus Medicare

Today is the 61st anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson‘s signing the Medicare amendment, which gave our country the Medicare and Medicaid programs, both of which are targeted by the Trump administration for reductions. In fact, just two days ago, President Trump “announced on Tuesday that it intended to end a Biden-era program that for the past two years has helped tamp down the cost of monthly premiums for drug coverage for people on Medicare.” Read the New York Times Gift Article here.
This is one more way the Trump administration is increasing the costs for Americans to obtain healthcare and to get and remain healthy. The administration has already reduced SNAP assistance, ended subsidies that helped Americans pay for health insurance through the ACA (CNBC, 2/24/2026), and next year, new rules as part of the OBBB go into effect (after the mid-terms) that has the goal of removing people from Medicaid, known as Mainecare here (New York Times, 2/29/2025).
We can bet that Susan Collins is very concerned about all this but somehow not concerned enough to have kept the OBBB out of debate. We believe that the next senator to be elected should be more than concerned, but actually do something to ensure that Trump’s policies do not continue to harm Mainers and all who live in country.
DNC versus RCV
Our good friend Abbie has forwarded the League of Women Voters or Maine’s alert about the Democratic National Committee’s proposing a ban on the use of Ranked-Choice Voting in the 2028 presidential primaries (Action 238-WHAT is the DNC THINKING?)
The LWV will be sending a letter to the Maine DNC delegates and you can add your name. The deadline is TOMORROW, 7/31/2026! Click here to add your name and click here to see the WABI story about this startling turn of events.
Susan Disappoints Again
Lastly, news that is disappointed, but not at all surprising, “our” senator, Susan Collins, “voted Tuesday to confirm President’s Donald Trump choice to become the nation’s top intelligence official, drawing criticism from Democrats.”
“The confirmation comes after Clayton drew opposition from Democrats for refusing to state the fact that Trump lost the 2020 presidential election and for his role for subpoenaing several journalists at The New York Times. The hearing raised questions from critics about whether he could remain independent of political influence.” Read the rest in this Portland Press Herald gift article.

Volunteering!
There are statewide races that need our help!
Troy Jackson is now the Democratic nominee for senate! The campaign is organizing and you can sign up here to get details when they are released.
Our US House Congressional District 2 candidate, Matt Dunlap, has all sorts of opportunities for volunteering.
And for governor, Hannah Pingree is our candidate! Find out more information about Hannah’s campaign here, with volunteer information here.
Both campaigns have multiple ways to help, from writing letters to the editor from the comfort of your own home, to going out and knocking on doors and speaking to voters! Whatever your comfort level is, there is something you can do for Troy, Matt, and Hanna!
Take Action
❗We are disappointed in Jared Golden for being one of 22 House Democrats who voted against the Lebanon War Powers Resolution bill. His vote fuels the escalation of the massive killings in Lebanon by Israel, and detracts from the potential final ending of Trump’s war with Iran. We urge Representative Golden to reconsider and vote for the Lebanon War Powers Resolution bill the next time that the vote comes up. Please consider signing this petition.
❗Stay tuned for tips and ideas for writing letters to the editor of local newspapers like The Bangor Daily News, The Portland Press Herald, and The Ellsworth American. A good number of older Mainers (like me!) read the printed newspaper and they read the LTEs!
