IB News: Thursday, 7/9: 🇺🇸14th Amendment Anniversary and Graham Platner-What Next?

Today is the 158th anniversary of the ratification of the 14th Amendment, which, as we all know by now, contains these words: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” The Supreme Court recently issued a ruling to uphold this amendment, but Trump and his MAGA people will continue to work to take that away. Stay tuned.

We all know what has been happening with the Graham Platner campaign. Many of us have worked hard to support this campaign and message and it is heartbreaking to see it end like this.

Yes, this whole thing was a big blow to many of us. But, this is the best decision. We still have the time to win in November and say “See Ya Susan.” We just need to find the best possible candidate to carry us to the finish line.

The Maine Democratic Party has issued a press release on the next steps:

“Today, the Maine Democratic Party held a meeting with over 100 state committee members who voted to hold a nominating convention to choose a new nominee if there is a vacancy to fill. We will announce the full timeline, details for how the nomination process will move forward, information about how to participate, and requirements for candidates soon. We will keep the public informed throughout the process – transparency is of the utmost importance.

“There is an unprecedented amount of energy and enthusiasm among Maine Democrats, driven in part by many of the dedicated volunteers and supporters who were inspired by Graham Platner’s campaign. We look forward to coming together and harnessing that energy around our new nominee as we work to defeat Susan Collins in November.”

His vote fuels the escalation of the massive killings in Lebanon by Israel, and detracts from the potential final ending of Trump’s war with Iran. We urge Representative Golden to reconsider and vote for the Lebanon War Powers Resolution bill the next time that the vote comes up. Please consider signing this petition.

❗Stay tuned for tips and ideas for writing letters to the editor of local newspapers like The Bangor Daily News, The Portland Press Herald, and The Ellsworth American. A good number of older Mainers (like me!) read the printed newspaper and they read the LTEs!
