IB News: Tuesday, 5/5: ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Thank you to everyone who attended a May Day event or participated in the May Day actions. It sounds like it was a great turnout worldwide. Head over to check out this week’s new events and check out the new action campaigns at the end of the newsletter. There is a new weekly demonstration in front of Jared Golden’s office to protest the war in Iran – and Jared’s refusal to stop it. The Wabanaki Alliance is hosting a 2nd District candidate forum next week and of course plenty of opportunities to volunteer with our endorsed candidates. Last but certainly not least, check out the newest action from the Hancock County Dems here.

Dismantling Democracy: 53 Days in Nazi Germany

Penobscot Chapter Meeting
Maine People’s Alliance

5:30pm
81 Main St, Bangor, ME, 04401

This weekend was the Maine Democratic Convention. Democrats from across the state gathered to learn about candidates and prepare for the upcoming Democratic primaries next month.

Indivisible Bangor endorsed candidates Graham Platner and Matt Dunlap both gave excellent speeches. If you weren’t able to attend in person, we’ve got you covered!

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the day when Mexico was victorious over France at the Battle of Puebla. I’m sure you totally knew that already – the holiday is strangely a bigger deal in the US than in Mexico. I do love that it falls on Taco Tuesday this year. What better way to celebrate than grabbing some tacos and a frozen (hold the ice this year!) margarita?

Here’s hoping it’s TACO Tuesday as well. Our favorite tin-pot President, Donald J(ail him already) Trump, is once again threatening the destruction of Iran, precariously dangling the current ceasefire by a thread. While discussing shipping in the Strait of Hormuz with Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst, Trump said Iran will “be blown off the face of the earth” if they target US ships.

El Presidente continued the destabilization of NATO and erosion of the US soft power in Europe when he announced the withdrawal of troops from Germany. We don’t need allies in war, right? We shouldn’t question Trump though. He holds all the cards after all.

Trump having never played a game of Uno in his life is not at all surprising – as if we needed any further confirmation that good ol’ Grandpa Slop has never done a normal human thing before. It looks like he’s probably still in the middle of drawing cards, because in reality I think it’s closer to this.

Seriously though, can someone please take away the AI image generator from him? Where’s Barron when we need him? Maybe the real celebration today is the ten year anniversary of this tweet. Every year this just ages worse and worse.

❗Tell Congress to protect the right to abortion, including medication abortion, and guarantee meaningful access to abortion for everyone, regardless of who they are or where they live, here.

❗We are deeply disappointed that Maine Congressman Jared Golden has once again voted against the House War Powers Resolution bill, this time casting the only Democratic vote against the bill, which resulted in the bill being defeated by one vote. Sign the petition to tell Congress about it here.

❗The ACLU has created a form to tell Congress NOT to authorize any additional funds here.
