    ~~~~~
    Hi Folks,
    Good morning everyone we’ve made it to August!
    Call our delegation to meet with members individually or through a town hall set up by the organization(s) you are connected with. Let them know what issues you are concerned about. (Details Below)
    Call our Senators to oppose the nomination of Fox News Host, Jeanine Pirro, for US Attorney for DC. Like Emile Bove and Ed Martin, she is an 2020 election questioner, Trump loyalist, who is interested in weaponizing the DOJ.
    (Details Below)
    Prepare for August 2nd Rage Against the Regime Actions (tomorrow), in Augusta and around the State.
    From earlier this week – support Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights.
    TODAY’S ACTION (s)
    • Call the Maine Delegation to request an individual meeting or take part in a Town Hall:  Congress is on recess during August.  This is a good time to meet with our representatives, or their staff to push for the issues we are most concerned about.  Gather 5-6 friends and make a date to talk to Collins, King, Golden, or Pingree.  More details at 5calls.org.
    • Oppose Fox News Host Jeanine Pirro for US Attorney for DC:  She is a Trump loyalist, election denier, interested in weaponizing the DOJ, and done everything one could imagine a Fox talk show host would do to downplay Trump’s sexism, racism, and you name it ism, more details on her at 5calls.org.
    • Join Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights: Palestinians deserve human rights they are being deprived of now. Make it clear that Mainers do not support this – go here for actions around Maine that protest the actions of the Israeli Government in Gaza.
    Statewide Actions This Week:
    • Stand Up for Palestinan Rights:  For events going on around the state in support of the Palestinian people go to Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights here.
    • August 2nd Rage Against the Regime Actions in Maine. 12 – 2 in Augusta, and in several other locations in Maine. Go here for more details.
    • If you know your Maine Representative or Senator is supportive of making ICE accountable in Maine,  ask them to join with Representative Cassie Julia to put in a bill to ensure proper identification of ICE agents acting in Maine. Lawmakers in California have introduced legislation requiring the identity and affiliation of ICE agents to be displayed while interacting with the public.
    • Indivisible Actions – Register HereFor the One Million Rising action – register here  and watch the first session here.
    • Help Activate Maine out – go here to submit events!
    • Buy some American Flags for your next Demo; there are lots around from July 4th – Reny’s (“the Maine Shopping Experience”) has bunches.
    I think it is a must for young people and generations yet to come, to understand, to feel, to touch, to almost smell the drama of what happened a few short years ago in the civil rights movement.  So maybe, just maybe we will never ever repeat this unbelievable time in our history.  We have to tell it all and make it plain and make it clear, so people will never ever forget the distance we have come and the progress we have yet to make.   John Lewis
    From our friends at Mid Maine Indivisible (and don’t forget to check out the weekly to-do list, link on the bottom):
    Hi Folks,
    Good morning everyone, Susan Collins voted against the Rescission Bill  last night. However it passed with an AIDs related program spared.
    Today is “Good Trouble” Action day throughout Maine. Grab some water, a piece of blue clothing, a sign, and head to the streets near you. Solidarity and action will give us heart and  and build the resistance. The rally in Augusta is designed to encircle the State House. Join us. There are rallies all over the state see below.
    For the Heart
    For Your Heart this Fourth Week of Summer: (while we stand in our rallies today)Standing centered in life, I feel my posture, my breath breathing itself. What sounds are being received? What sights? I welcome in and get to know the feeling of unpleasant in the body. The more I open to the feeling of unpleasant, not the thinking that goes around in the gerbel cage, but the feeling, the more centered I am. The more centered I am, the more I can respond with clarity.
    Mysteries, Yes
    Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
    to be understood.
    How grass can be nourishing in the
    mouths of the lambs.
    How rivers and stones are forever
    in allegiance with gravity
    while we ourselves dream of rising.
    How two hands touch and the bonds will
    never be broken.
    How people come, from delight or the
    scars of damage,
    to the comfort of a poem.
    Let me keep my distance, always, from those
    who think they have the answers.
    Let me keep company always with those who say
    “Look!” and laugh in astonishment,
    and bow their heads.
    From our friends at Mid Maine Indivisible:
    Hi Folks,
    Good morning everyone, Susan Collins voted against moving the Rescission Bill forward last night. A short article on her statements is here . The GOP won the vote with a tiebreaker from Vance.
    Pressure works. If you didn’t manage to do this yesterday, call Collins TODAY, thank her for her no vote and ask her to continue opposing Trump’s request H.R. 4 to cut already awarded funds to PBS, clean technology, foreign aid, global health, international peace keeping. Ask her to submit amendments to restore funding for these initiatives, particularly the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Global Health initiatives.  These are funds that have already been granted, which the GOP is trying to take away!!!
    Action Tuesday July 15th from Mid Maine Indivisible
    From our friends at Mid Maine Indivisible:
    Hi Folks,
    Good morning everyone, if you didn’t manage to do this yesterday, call our Senators TODAY and ask them to oppose Trump’s request H.R. 4 to cut already awarded funds to PBS, clean technology, foreign aid, global health, international peace keeping etc. through a process called Rescission. (A vote on this is likely today or tomorrow in the Senate.)
    Make a space on your calendar for July 17th “Good Trouble” actions.
    TODAY’S ACTION (s)
    • Prepare to join “Good Trouble” Actions throughout Maine on Thursday, July 17th:  Activate Maine has 18 events listed for that day!
    • Contact our Senators to ask them to OPPOSE H.R. 4, a Rescission Package to cut funding that Congress has already awarded: This request will defund PBS, Foreign Aid, Global Health, International Peacekeeping, etc. For more detail go to 5calls.org and/or read Abbie Mcmillen’s post attached below. The Senate has until midnight on Friday to bring the rescissions bill up for consideration or else it loses its privileged status under a 1974 budget law and would be subject to normal filibuster rules.
    • Indivisible has a number of trainings you can sign up for: Strategies for demasking ICE locally, bringing friends into the resistance, fighting authoritarianism – join their one million rising trainings, and more – see details in attachment below. Sign up for them here.
    •                                                             From Last Week
    • Contact our Congressional Delegation and State Representatives to support required identification for ICE agents: Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) has introduced the No Masks for ICE Act to bring “basic transparency and accountability to immigration enforcement” and combat the climate of fear, chaos, and confusion caused by anonymous perpetrators. Go to 5calls.org for more information on this effort. Go to Indivisible’s Blue State Defiance Toolkit to take action.
    • Contact our Congress People to Oppose HR 875: The National Immigration Law Center suggests these talking points to oppose the bill. This bill would allow ICE to go through all arrests for DUI nationally and deport immigrants for previous violations. The National Institute on Drug Abuse says that seeking punishment above treatment doesn’t work. The science and morality say this bill is wrong on the face of it; another way to terrorize  immigrant communities in Maine and throughout our country.
    • If you live in Mid Maine contact the Somerset County Commissioners: Ask them not to oppose LD 1971. For talking points go to the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project. Contact the current board chair, Robert Sezak, who is a Democrat and reachable at: robert.sezak@somersetcounty-me.org; if you live in Somerset County find your Commissioner here and contact them. For the full article on this in Friday’s Morning Sentinel go here.
    • Build the Resistance: Make a list of friends you think have not engaged yet. Pick one to talk with. Let them know how important public resistance is to dictatorship. Invite them to join you in whatever way they can. Indivisible Attachment Below has a toolkit for this.
    Statewide Actions This Week:
    • Get in touch with your Maine Representative and Senator and ask them to put in a bill to ensure proper identification of ICE agents acting in Maine. Lawmakers in California have introduced legislation requiring the identity and affiliation of ICE agents to be displayed while interacting with the public.
(A vote on this is likely today or tomorrow in the Senate.)
    Ask our Congress people (Pingree and Golden) to support US Weather Prediction and Science funding. The lack of coordinated warnings in the flooding disaster in Texas is directly connected to cuts made to the National Weather Service. This is a huge issue heading our way each time Climate Change enhanced storms hit.
    From Last Week: (You can add these into the phone calls you make above)
    There is now a Federal Bill submitted by Rep. Nydia Velázquez demanding the Unmasking of ICE Agents. Incidents around the country of people impersonating ICE and Police Officers terrorizing immigrants have increased the need for clear and accountable ways to identify official personnel. Support this Bill
    Oppose HR 875 – a bill to allow a previous or current arrest for Driving Under the Influence to result in deportation for immigrant populations.
    Finally here in the Mid Maine area our Somerset County Commissioners are considering opposing LD 1971 which keeps Maine Police from doing ICE’s work. Ask them not to oppose this bill.
  • Call Janet Mills – LD 1971
    Call Janet Mills – LD 1971
    ME LD1971
    An Act to Protect Workers in This State by Clarifying the Relationship of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies with Federal Immigration Authorities
    This bill is on Janet Mills’ desk now!
    Call her and urge her to sign it!
    Among other related things, this bill “enacts provisions to clarify the relationship of state and local law enforcement agencies, including correctional facilities, and state employees with federal immigration authorities. The bill: 1. Prohibits a law enforcement agency from stopping, investigating, interrogating, arresting or detaining a person for immigration enforcement purposes, including in response to a hold request, immigration detainer or administrative warrant issued by the United States Department of Homeland Security, or allowing the United States Department of Homeland Security access to inmates or inmate information or providing law enforcement agency resources or personnel to assist immigration enforcement activities.”
    LD 1971 includes common-sense guardrails to protect the rights and safety of Maine’s immigrants, and all of us. It ensures that state and local law enforcement aren’t stepping outside of their official duties to assist the federal government with mass deportation.
