Reminder: When you call vs when you email via our reps’ websites (best way to contact them in writing), don’t forget to begin with: “Hi, my name is [name] and I’m a constituent calling from [zip code]. That is important, because if they don’t know you’re actually a constituent, your opinion will be ignored.

Actions
The House has been sent home for recess to avoid dealing with the whole Epstein thing (see the first Action Item, below). So call or visit Jared Golden’s local Maine offices to make your voice heard. Especially ask if he is going to hold any Town Halls in August. If he’s not, ask why not and stress that avoiding his constituents is no way to represent us.
- Keep the Epstein coverup front and center, since Trump is trying so hard to distract everyone from it:
- Indivisible has an entire page devoted to this, including backstory, explanation of why it’s important, and actions we can take, with scripts. https://indivisible.org/epsteinfiles Be sure to check out the “Extra Credit” action at the end: I think we could all have some fun with that.
- Also: Newsmax is apparently starting to refer to Ghislaine Maxwell as a “victim.” Don’t let them get away with this. She wasn’t convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison because she was a “victim.” She is a predator who engaged in human trafficking and abused minors. Our representatives in Congress should denounce this language and keep reminding the world that he only victims here were the young women Maxwell and Epstein took advantage of.
- Sign a Resistbot letter to oppose the backing off of HUD’s enforcement of fair housing laws:
- Text SIGN PGEZML to 50409, or to @Resistbot on Apple Messages, Messenger, Instagram, or Telegram.
- Or, if you prefer to customize the letter (which is a good idea but way more time consuming), type it up the way you want it, then use whatever app you use for text messages and start a message to 50409 (or “resistbot” on FB Messenger). In the message part, type the word “Resist” and follow the prompts. Be prepared to paste in your version of the letter.
- I know it all feels overwhelming, but we need to keep hammering on our lawmakers to finally do what we’ve been asking them to do. Don’t let them think we’ve forgotten and moved on to other concerns. Look back at previous Action Items emails to get more info on these and other issues:
- Keep after our congresspeople to fight to rein in ICE’s uncontrolled terrorizing of citizens and non-citizens alike. People are being attacked, beaten, kidnapped, and detained in horrific conditions by masked, armed men—all without any kind of due process or even the slightest nod to the laws of our Constitution. This is nothing more than Trump and Project 2025 building their private police state. Needless to say, it has to be stopped. So does the huge investment into the building of more concentration camps like “Alligator Auschwitz.”
- Push Senators King and Collins to oppose Emil Bove’s confirmation for a lifetime judgeship on the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals (for yet another article about why he shouldn’t be confirmed: https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5418602-senate-appeals-court-nominee-emil-bove/ )
- Keep contacting our congresspeople to support clean energy. Six days ago, the Citizens’ Climate Lobby met with Congress to convince our lawmakers to act decisively—and soon—to ensure that America’s energy is affordable, reliable, and clean. Hopefully, their message moved at least some of our reps and got them to think smarter about this issue. We can help by reminding them. More info here: https://citizensclimatelobby.org/get-loud-take-action/capitol-hill-call-in/
- Keep talking to people about the damage the Trump administration and the Republican Congress are doing to the lives of everyday Americans. Wear clothing that supports our message: both what we object to and what we stand for.
- Attend another protest on August 2nd.
- On Saturday, August 2nd, the organization called 50501 (50 protests, 50 states,1 movement) is calling for a “Rise Against the Regime” national protest. To find one near you, go to https://events.pol-rev.com/
- There will be one in Ellsworth, 4:30pm – 6pm. See picture at the bottom for more details.

- Contact Senators King and Collins and Rep. Golden to help save the hospital in Ellsworth.
- Back on June 12th, four Democrat Senators wrote a letter to Trump, Mike Johnson, and John Thune outlining the negative effects the Big Bad Bill will have on rural hospitals across the country. That letter lists Maine Coast Memorial Hospital as one of 2 Maine hospitals in danger of closing (the other is Aroostook Medical Center). This is very bad news for a lot of us. The cuts to rural healthcare cannot be allowed to stand.
- Contact our congresspeople and tell them how closing MCMH will negatively impact you and your neighbors. Make your story as personal as possible. Tell them that money can’t be cut.
- Save Maine’s Absentee Ballot Voting.
- In November, the Maine elections will include a referendum to further limit the ability of Mainers to vote by, among other things, severely limiting access to and use of absentee ballots. The finalized referendum reads as follows:
- “Do you want to change Maine election laws to eliminate two days of absentee voting, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities, ban prepaid postage on absentee ballot return envelopes, limit the number of drop boxes, require voters to show certain photo ID before voting, and make other changes to our elections? ”You can read more about it here: https://saveabsentee.me/
- Help Activate Maine keep up their online calendar of resistance events.
- Activate Maine desperately needs more volunteers to help with posting events on their statewide calendar, which is visited by over 10K people every month. Doing your part will only take a few minutes every day. When you volunteer, you’ll receive training. They’re making it as easy as possible. Sign up here: http://bit.ly/4m5mo8A
A lot to do, as is the case so often these days. 😢
