  • A Message from Food AND Medicine

    Friends,

    We are working hard on the Bangor races, which are arguably the most important in the state. As I’m sure you know, for the Bangor City Council there are 3 open seats, with 9 candidates this year. A lot of strange play can happen with so many candidates and 3 seats. Last year, during a presidential election, 6,027 votes got people on the council, and there were 22,414 votes left blank! This year there will be a much lighter turnout. In light of these dynamics, we are strongly encouraging a bloc vote. In my view, we have:

    Three good candidates: Angela Walker, Susan Faloon and Daniel Carson. All of them filled out our questionnaire showing they support our values, and they have been endorsed by FAM and the Eastern Maine Labor Council.

    • Daniel Carson is on FAM’s board and is all about the movement and building worker power. He does well with process and committees—something sorely needed in Bangor.
    • Angela Walker is Indigenous, with a strong commitment to her recovery and sharing recovery with others; she currently works at the BARN.
    • Susan Faloon is a solid progressive who supports workers, marginalized people, and justice-based solutions to our issues.

    Three not-so-good candidates: Richard Ward, Colleen O’Neal and Justin Cartier range from a conspiracy theorist, to someone who proudly uses neo-Nazi rhetoric, to someone who is very anti-homeless. Colleen and Justin will likely get significant votes with name recognition, as they were Republican representative candidates in the last election.

    Three mixed candidates: Steven Ferren, Reese Perkins and James Gallagher. A vote for any of these three candidates may put Ward, O’Neal, or Cartier onto the council. None of these candidates filled out our questionnaire.

    For the Bangor School Committee — it’s really tough. There are 4 candidates for 2 spots; 3 are really good, and one is truly awful:

    • Mallory Cook and Benjamin Speed: we think both are great, and we have endorsed both.
    • Frank Casella is someone that has no business being on our School Committee. Here’s the BDN write-up on Casella (language warning):

    “Casella is active on X, formerly known as Twitter, and has shared opinions online criticizing immigrants for not assimilating to American culture, ‘gender ideology,’ and the Muslim faith. He has written that ‘Islam is a backwards religion’ and called people ‘whore’ and ‘stupid commie retard.’” (Note: some of these posts may have been taken down.)

    • Laura Otis: she’s really good, but unfortunately, a vote for her will likely end up putting Frank Casella on the School Committee.

    What can you do?

    1. Vote for the bloc of endorsed candidates: We are encouraging people to vote as a bloc for both City Council and School Committee, meaning vote for all of our endorsed candidates to avoid splitting votes. If people split votes, it opens the door for some pretty poor candidates to get elected.
    2. City Council and School Committee Forum: This will be on Thursday, October 16, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. It would be good to have a strong turnout.
    3. Door knock with us: We are knocking doors in Bangor all the time, especially Saturdays beginning at 9 a.m. We have materials and will train you if you’ve never done it. It’s really enjoyable having conversations with our neighbors. This is a great volunteer opportunity to make a difference in our community.
    4. Speak to friends and neighbors: With so much at stake, we are encouraging people to speak to their friends and neighbors, because some people don’t know these details.

    Let us know if you want to join in—especially for the door knocks. Just reply to this email. See below for info on this Saturday’s No Kings rally and march in Bangor, organized by Indivisible.

    Take care,
    Jack

    Action Friday, Sept. 12, Bangor: FINAL Stop Avelo Standout!, “No on 1” Canvass, Federal Budget, and Mid Maine Indivisible

    Welcome to all the new members on our mailing list! Here is today’s call to action from us at Indivisible Bangor, followed by the great list of important actions from our friends at Mid Maine Indivisible. AND new actions from Hancock Country Democrats (Action 164) and Bold Coast Civic Alliance (9/8).

    Indivisible Bangor remains committed to free speech and non-violence in all of our actions. Any life lost to gun violence is a tragedy with countless ripples affecting the lives of loved ones and our greater society.

    We are horrified to learn of the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk. Political violence has no place in democracy. The foundation of democracy rests on the principle that differences can be debated vigorously, but peacefully, without intimidation or acts of violence. In America, no one should be targeted with violence for their beliefs or political affiliations. Indivisible stands united in absolute opposition to all forms of political violence, without reservation, and condemns this horrific act. We extend our condolences to his family and his loved ones during this difficult time.

    Volunteers are needed for this Sunday, 9/14

    The next Save Maine Absentee Voting Canvass in Brewer, Sunday September 14th, 2025, and we need your help! We need to educate Maine voters that Question 1 on November’s ballot is about a whole lot more than just “Voter I.D.,” but also includes many more voter suppression provisions.  And check out the latest Hancock County Action Alert on this!

    Speaking of Save Maine Absentee Voting, there is a LOT of misinformation out there concerning Question 1, the voter suppression question that will be on the ballot THIS November.

    Help spread the word about how this is written to make voting more difficult for voters by restricting access to absentee ballots, a method of voting that thousands of us Mainers use every election.

    Visit the Save Maine Absentee Voting site to learn more. Then speak to your friends, your family, your neighbors, and even strangers! And write a letter to the editor-there are letters weekly playing this down, calling it “common sense” legislation! This is part of the MAGA playbook and we can stop it!

    Maine Rising UpTuesday, September 16th, 2025, 6:00 pm

    Making Good Trouble with Ezra Levin – A Maine Indivisible Fall Kickoff event in Gorham, Maine!!  Join Indivisible groups from across Maine to launch a bold new campaign this fall centered around the principle of non-cooperation / non-compliance—a form of lawful, nonviolent resistance that refuses to enable or normalize authoritarian rule.

    Graham Platner in Brewer Thursday, October 9th

    “We’ll be at the Eastern Maine Labor Council Hall from 6:00pm-7:00pm on. I hope you’ll come and check out this movement we’re building to defeat Susan Collins and her multi-billionaire backers. Come out, ask questions, and bring a friend or three. I’ll see you there.”

    Make Some Calls!

    It’s mentioned a few times in these newsletters about calling your representatives in Washington, D.C. It’s one of the most important things we can do and it’s so easy! The telephone numbers to the four Maine representatives in Washington are always listed in this newsletter, but for those of you reading this who live in another state, the site 5calls.org is the best way to find the contact info for your reps. AND, they have a list of the important issues to discuss when calling. It’s a super source and it’s easy to remember! Call early and often!

    If you are more comfortable with sending emails to our Maine Congressional delegation in Washington, visit our Direct Action page for the links that go right to their email option.

    California Redistricting Question-they need your help!

    The California redistricting question, Proposition 50, will be on their ballot this November. This is intended to be a voter-approved plan to counter the Trump-directed gerrymandering that Gov. Abbot enacted in Texas to give Republicans five more seats in the House. Missouri legislators are looking to do a similar action.

    If you’d like to help, there are phone banking opportunities! Help out our fellow Americans in California with their “Yes on 50” campaign from the comfort of your home here in beautiful Maine!

    One of our members has started a letter/petition to the President of the University of Maine at Orono to preserve their DEI policies.

    “As students, faculty, staff, and alumni of The University of Maine at Orono, and people who support universities maintaining their DEI policies, we urge you to do your utmost to preserve the DEI policies at the University of Maine at Orono. We understand the complications and dangers involved in doing so, and we also appreciate your efforts to continue these policies while changing DEI names to avoid negative consequences from the Trump administration. However, we are concerned that as pressures mount there may be more motivation to agree to changes in DEI policies in addition to name changes, and we are concerned that this would compromise the basic values that are at the foundations of this university. We appreciate the statements of Interim Dean of Students Andrea Gifford in her reassurance that the university’s DEI policies are not changing in spite of the name changes, and it is our hope that this continues.”

    The petition is open to signatures from anyone supportve of maintaining DEI policies at the university, regardless of whether or not you are affiliated with the school. Please sign! And please sign the second petition that applies to all universities in the U.S.

    Action Friday September 12th: Get Involved in Maine’s Two Referendum Issues – Oppose the Voter ID Question 1, and Support the Red Flag Law Question 2

    Hi Folks, it’s Friday and we have almost reached the Autumnal Equinox!

    There must be a theory somewhere that your political power increases exponentially as you get closer, geographically, to whomever you want to convince. Another way to say it is that the more local you get the greater your political power. Let’s look at two Maine – based issues coming up in this fall’s referendum vote.

    Support the effort to defeat the Voter ID law which takes away our right as Mainers to use absentee ballots. We can donate, and canvass to defeat this voter suppression initiative. Go to SaveAbsenteeMe to pledge to vote no, and sign up for canvassing in early October. This initiative will have significant opposition as it is paired with the Red Flag initiative cited below.

    Support the effort to get a red flag gun law in Maine – this would allow family and household members to petition the court to have guns removed from a loved one who is having a mental health crisis. This is called an Extreme Risk Protection Order. Gun rights advocates will be out in force to defeat this one. For more information go to the Maine Gun Safety Coalition.You can help by canvassing and donating to this cause as well.

    From Yesterday

    Call or write your Congressional Representatives, and ask them to vote against funding the upcoming Appropriations Bill. This is a chance for our politicians to stand strong against the criminality and corruption going on in the Executive Branch, in our names, with our tax dollars.

    Call or write Susan Collins and Angus King asking them to pledge now to vote to force the release of these files when the issue comes to the Senate.

    Consider volunteering for Graham Platner’s campaign for US Senate. Go here

    Mark Saturday, October 18th for the next nationwide mass No Kings2 rally. Start talking to a young person you know to get them engaged in the resistance.

    TODAY’S ACTION (s)

    • Get involved in the referendum questions coming up in Maine on November 4th: Here is the wording of the questions; you can donate and canvass to oppose the voter ID law (Question 1) by going to SaveAbsenteeMe , and you can support the institution of a Red Flag Law (Question 2) by going to the Maine Gun Safety Coalition. You can request your absentee ballot herenow. One yes vote (Red Flag), one no vote (Voter ID).  For more information on these referendum questions check out the attached article from the Portland Press Herald.
    • From Earlier this Week
    • Write or call our Congress people and ask them to speak out against military deployment in Blue Cities: Let’s face it, this is a pure power grab aimed at terrorizing immigrant communities, and setting up a power dynamic that the Executive branch can do whatever it wishes. See 5calls.org for more information.
    • Write or call our Congress people and ask them to vote against funding the upcoming appropriations bill: Let’s shut it down and make demands that can be met swiftly by the Executive branch. This could be a tipping point for Congress to use its anti-authoritarian power. For more background go to 5calls.org.
    • Write or Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to pledge now to force the release of the Epstein Files: The House should pass this effort at the end of the month and then it will go to the Senate where progressive measures have gone to die. This is an issue that has the administration on its back foot – we need to push on it for moral as well as political reasons. For more info. on releasing the files go to 5calls.org.
    • Call our Congress People and ask them to demand that the CDC follow science and change its vaccine guidance: Currently they are only advising that 65+ folks and people with immune compromised conditions get the vaccine.  Go to  5calls.org for the details.
    • Call or email Governor Mills to form a health alliance with other New England states to give Vaccine Guidance: Washington, California and Oregon have done this; it could help to maintain the health and herd immunity of our populations in the NorthEast. This may be in the works – let’s support it!
    • Consider volunteering and/or donating to Graham Platner’s campaign for US Senate: He is the real deal. A progressive Mainer who will take on Susan Collins with no fear. Volunteer/donate here.
    • Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics:  Why? This position is supposed to be non-partisan so economists can base their plans for the economy on it. Antoni has made it clear he is a Trump loyalist, and will slant the figures he uses to show that Trump and Co. are doing a great job. Go here for the five calls.org piece on this.
    • Oppose the VoterID/no absentee voting referendum, question 1, and support the Red Flag Gun Law, question 2; get your absentee ballot today, here.
    • Start thinking about how we can involve young people in the resistance. High Schoolers, College Age folk have not bought in to the movement in any significant numbers. Bring one young person to No Kings2 mass rally October 18th.
    • Ask Janet Mills to join other Blue States to call for a redistricting of Maine so that Democratic candidates have the edge in the second district, if and only if other states join Texas in redistricting to the Republican advantage. For talking points on this go here. For a toolkit on this for red and blue states go here.
    • Start a Poster/Chalking Campaign in Your Neighborhood! Go here for ideas and check in with Karen about a postering campaign in Mid Maine.
    • If you are in the Mid Coast area consider joining Audacity – learn more here.
    • Note:  September 14th 2 -4pm at the Mount View High School, 577 Mount View Road, Thorndike, ME 04986. ALL FOUR DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR will be on a panel facilitated by Murray Carpenter. To register go here.
    • For statewide NoKings2 Actions go to the Activate Maine calendar, and Mobilize to see if there is an event planned near you for October 18th.  If there isn’t one within an hour’s drive plan one for your community!!

    Diane Nash, a charismatic veteran leader of the Civil Rights Movement, in an address at the National Catholic Conference for Interracial Justice in 1961, said:  “The problems lie not so much in our action as in our inaction… I’m wondering now if we in the United States are really remembering that this must be a government ‘of the people’ and ‘by the people’ as well as ‘for the people’. Are we really appreciating the fact that if you and I do not meet these responsibilities then our government cannot survive as a democracy?”

    In her address to the National Call to Action Conference in 2012, she said: “We, the citizens, are the only ones who can change this country. We have to get to work, keep on working and force our elected officials to implement our vision of justice and peace.”

    And now to the Mid Maine Indivisible morning Call to Action!

    ~~~
    Action Thursday September 11th: Stop Sending Military Troops and National Guard to Our Cities
    Hi Folks, it’s Thursday and For the Heart!
    The administration’s deployment of US military troops and National Guard to fight a phantom crime wave that appears to be happening only in Blue Cities (Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, LA) is unconstitutional and designed to terrorize immigrant communities, and anyone that is not white with English as their second language.
    This is a prelude to military presence at polling places next fall during the 2026 elections. Call or write our Congressional Delegation and ask them to speak out against this clear violation of the President’s powers – there is no emergency, there is no crime wave, there is only blatant executive overreach.
    From Yesterday
    Call or write your Congressional Representatives, and ask them to vote against funding the upcoming Appropriations Bill. This is a chance for our politicians to stand strong against the criminality and corruption going on in the Executive Branch, in our names, with our tax dollars.
    Call or write Susan Collins and Angus King asking them to pledge now to vote to force the release of these files when the issue comes to the Senate.
    Consider volunteering for Graham Platner’s campaign for US Senate. Go here
    Mark Saturday, October 18th for the next nationwide mass No Kings2 rally. Start talking to a young person you know to get them engaged in the resistance.
    For the Heart
    For Your Heart this Eleventh Week of Summer:
    In Asian psychology there is a state of mind that is honored, Great Love, Great Sadness. Love (and it can be a practice) is so big that it can hold sadness. “Bring me your sadness, your pain.” Great Love says to Sadness. To be strong enough to hold pain, is an amazing thing. It takes practice, start with the small sadness, such as your toothpaste is empty and work up, to larger sadnesses – actions of self, actions of others, and so forth. If we can be centered in Great Love, Great Sadness, we can act from a place of clarity.
    To Be of Use
    The people I love the best
    jump into work head first
    without dallying in the shallows
    and swim off with sure strokes almost out of sight.
    They seem to become natives of that element,
    the black sleek heads of seals
    bouncing like half submerged balls.
    I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart,
    who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience,
    who strain in the mud and the muck to move things forward,
    who do what has to be done, again and again.
    I want to be with people who submerge
    in the task, who go into the fields to harvest
    and work in a row and pass the bags along,
    who stand in the line and haul in their places,
    who are not parlor generals and field deserters
    but move in a common rhythm
    when the food must come in or the fire be put out.
    The work of the world is common as mud.
    Botched, it smears the hands, crumbles to dust.
    But the thing worth doing well done
    has a shape that satisfies, clean and evident.
    Greek amphoras for wine or oil,
    Hopi vases that held corn, are put in museums
    but you know they were made to be used.
    The pitcher cries for water to carry
    and a person for work that is real.
    TODAY’S ACTION (s)
    • Write or call our Congress people and ask them to speak out against military deployment in Blue Cities: Let’s face it, this is a pure power grab aimed at terrorizing immigrant communities, and setting up a power dynamic that the Executive branch can do whatever it wishes. See 5calls.org for more information.
    • From Earlier this Week
    • Write or call our Congress people and ask them to vote against funding the upcoming appropriations bill: Let’s shut it down and make demands that can be met swiftly by the Executive branch. This could be a tipping point for Congress to use its anti-authoritarian power. For more background go to 5calls.org.
    • Write or Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to pledge now to force the release of the Epstein Files: The House should pass this effort at the end of the month and then it will go to the Senate where progressive measures have gone to die.     • Call our Congress People and ask them to demand that the CDC follow science and change its vaccine guidance: Currently they are only advising that 65+ folks and people with immune compromised conditions get the vaccine.  Go to  5calls.org for the details.
    • Call or email Governor Mills to form a health alliance with other New England states to give Vaccine Guidance: Washington, California and Oregon have done this; it could help to maintain the health and herd immunity of our populations in the NorthEast.     ***Nationwide No Kings Protest!***
    ***October 18, 2025***
    Tell your friends!!!
    No Kings is a peaceful movement of millions of Americans from all walks of life rising up to make it clear: We don’t do dictators or kings in America. We never will. We’re organizing and taking action to defend each other and our communities, demand dignity, and say enough to all of the Trump administration’s power grabs.
    Millions of us took to the streets in June, and we’re doing it again on Saturday, October 18.
    The protest will happen at Broadway Park in Bangor at noon! The site will appear soon on the Mobilize site, so stay tuned!!
    Volunteers are needed
    The next Save Maine Absentee Voting Canvass in Brewer, Sunday September 14th, 2025, and we need your help! We need to educate Maine voters that Question 1 on November’s ballot is about a whole lot more than just “Voter I.D.,” but also includes many more voter suppression provisions.  And check out the latest Hancock County Action Alert on this!
    Speaking of Save Maine Absentee Voting, there is a LOT of misinformation out there concerning Question 1, the voter suppression question that will be on the ballot THIS November.
    Help spread the word about how this is written to make voting more difficult for voters by restricting access to absentee ballots, a method of voting that thousands of us Mainers use every election.
    Visit the Save Maine Absentee Voting site to learn more. Then speak to your friends, your family, your neighbors, and even strangers! And write a letter to the editor-there are letters weekly playing this down, calling it “common sense” legislation! This is part of the MAGA playbook and we can stop it!
    Maine Rising UpTuesday, September 16th, 2025, 6:00 pm
    Making Good Trouble with Ezra Levin – A Maine Indivisible Fall Kickoff event in Gorham, Maine!!  Join Indivisible groups from across Maine to launch a bold new campaign this fall centered around the principle of non-cooperation / non-compliance—a form of lawful, nonviolent resistance that refuses to enable or normalize authoritarian rule.
    Graham Platner in Brewer Thursday, October 9th
    “We’ll be at the Eastern Maine Labor Council Hall from 6:00pm-7:00pm on. I hope you’ll come and check out this movement we’re building to defeat Susan Collins and her multi-billionaire backers. Come out, ask questions, and bring a friend or three. I’ll see you there.”
    Make Some Calls!
    It’s mentioned a few times in these newsletters about calling your representatives in Washington, D.C. It’s one of the most important things we can do and it’s so easy! The telephone numbers to the four Maine representatives in Washington are always listed in this newsletter, but for those of you reading this who live in another state, the site 5calls.org is the best way to find the contact info for your reps. AND, they have a list of the important issues to discuss when calling. It’s a super source and it’s easy to remember! Call early and often!
    California Redistricting Question-they need your help!
    The California redistricting question, Proposition 50, will be on their ballot this November. This is intended to be a voter-approved plan to counter the Trump-directed gerrymandering that Gov. Abbot enacted in Texas to give Republicans five more seats in the House.
    If you’d like to help, there are phone banking opportunities! Help out our fellow Americans in California with their “Yes on 50” campaign from the comfort of your home here in beautiful Maine!
    One of our members has started a letter/petition to the President of the University of Maine at Orono to preserve their DEI policies.
    “As students, faculty, staff, and alumni of The University of Maine at Orono, and people who support universities maintaining their DEI policies, we urge you to do your utmost to preserve the DEI policies at the University of Maine at Orono. We understand the complications and dangers involved in doing so, and we also appreciate your efforts to continue these policies while changing DEI names to avoid negative consequences from the Trump administration. However, we are concerned that as pressures mount there may be more motivation to agree to changes in DEI policies in addition to name changes, and we are concerned that this would compromise the basic values that are at the foundations of this university. We appreciate the statements of Interim Dean of Students Andrea Gifford in her reassurance that the university’s DEI policies are not changing in spite of the name changes, and it is our hope that this continues.”
    The petition is open to signatures from anyone supportve of maintaining DEI policies at the university, regardless of whether or not you are affiliated with the school. Please sign! And please sign the second petition that applies to all universities in the U.S.
    Action Wednesday September 10th: Ask Our Congress People to Vote Against the Appropriations Bill and Shut the Government Down Until Demands are Met
    Hi Folks, it’s Wednesday, the middle of the week!
    A fight over the new Federal Appropriations Bill is going on now. Government spending must be approved by September 30th for the Government to continue operating. It’s time for the Democrats and other like minded politicians to shut the government down showing that they are not OK with what has been going on Federally. There are many demands that could be made and responded to easily – Release the Epstein Files, US Military out of our cities, Vaccines for all.
    Call or write your Congressional Representatives, and ask them to vote against funding the upcoming Appropriations Bill. This is a chance for our politicians to stand strong against the criminality and corruption going on in the Executive Branch, in our names, with our tax dollars.
    From Yesterday
    Call or write Susan Collins and Angus King asking them to pledge now to vote to force the release of these files when the issue comes to the Senate.
    Ask our Congressional representatives to demand that the Bureau of Health and Human Services change its guidance to allow all of us access to Covid 19 vaccines. Currently the access is limited to people 65 and older, and those with immunological conditions.
    Ask Governor Mills to join with other New England States to form a health alliance and issue vaccine guidance for our area as California, Oregon and Washington have done.
    Our health as individuals and as a community is at stake.
    Consider volunteering for Graham Platner’s campaign for US Senate. Go here
    Mark Saturday, October 18th for the next nationwide mass No Kings2 rally. Start talking to a young person you know to get them engaged in the resistance.
We have attached their poster ideas at the bottom of this email. Contact Karen for the Mid Maine Poster Campaign.Design your own signs and/or get an artist to design some for you. Remember poles belong to CMP and overtly political statements may be subject to legal action, however they seem to be ok with lost cats and dogs.     The next Save Maine Absentee Voting Canvass in Brewer, Sunday September 14th, 2025, and we need your help! We need to educate Maine voters that Question 1 on November’s ballot is about a whole lot more than just “Voter I.D.,” but also includes many more voter suppression provisions.  And check out the latest Hancock County Action Alert on this!
    Speaking of Save Maine Absentee Voting, there is a LOT of misinformation out there concerning Question 1, the voter suppression question that will be on the ballot THIS November.
    Help spread the word about how this is written to make voting more difficult for voters by restricting access to absentee ballots, a method of voting that thousands of us Mainers use every election.
    Visit the Save Maine Absentee Voting site to learn more. Then speak to your friends, your family, your neighbors, and even strangers! And write a letter to the editor-there are letters weekly playing this down, calling it “common sense” legislation! This is part of the MAGA playbook and we can stop it!
    Maine Rising UpTuesday, September 16th, 2025, 6:00 pm
    Making Good Trouble with Ezra Levin – A Maine Indivisible Fall Kickoff event in Gorham, Maine!!  Join Indivisible groups from across Maine to launch a bold new campaign this fall centered around the principle of non-cooperation / non-compliance—a form of lawful, nonviolent resistance that refuses to enable or normalize authoritarian rule.
    “We’ll be at the Eastern Maine Labor Council Hall from 6:00pm-7:00pm on. I hope you’ll come and check out this movement we’re building to defeat Susan Collins and her multi-billionaire backers. Come out, ask questions, and bring a friend or three. I’ll see you there.”
    Make Some Calls!
    It’s mentioned a few times in these newsletters about calling your representatives in Washington, D.C. It’s one of the most important things we can do and it’s so easy! The telephone numbers to the four Maine representatives in Washington are always listed in this newsletter, but for those of you reading this who live in another state, the site 5calls.org is the best way to find the contact info for your reps. AND, they have a list of the important issues to discuss when calling. It’s a super source and it’s easy to remember! Call early and often!
    California Redistricting Question-they need your help!
    The California redistricting question, Proposition 50, will be on their ballot this November. This is intended to be a voter-approved plan to counter the Trump-directed gerrymandering that Gov. Abbot enacted in Texas to give Republicans five more seats in the House.
    If you’d like to help, there are phone banking opportunities! Help out our fellow Americans in California with their “Yes on 50” campaign from the comfort of your home here in beautiful Maine!
    One of our members has started a letter/petition to the President of the University of Maine at Orono to preserve their DEI policies.
    “As students, faculty, staff, and alumni of The University of Maine at Orono, and people who support universities maintaining their DEI policies, we urge you to do your utmost to preserve the DEI policies at the University of Maine at Orono. We understand the complications and dangers involved in doing so, and we also appreciate your efforts to continue these policies while changing DEI names to avoid negative consequences from the Trump administration. However, we are concerned that as pressures mount there may be more motivation to agree to changes in DEI policies in addition to name changes, and we are concerned that this would compromise the basic values that are at the foundations of this university. We appreciate the statements of Interim Dean of Students Andrea Gifford in her reassurance that the university’s DEI policies are not changing in spite of the name changes, and it is our hope that this continues.”
    The petition is open to signatures from anyone supportve of maintaining DEI policies at the university, regardless of whether or not you are affiliated with the school. Please sign! And please sign the second petition that applies to all universities in the U.S.
    And now to the Mid Maine Indivisible morning Call to Action!
    ~~~

    Action Tuesday September 9th: Call Senators King and Collins and Ask Them to Pledge Now to Force the Release of the Epstein Files + Demand Access to Covid 19 Vaccines for All

    Hi Folks, it’s Tuesday, and the breaking national news is that Trump’s sexist, lewd, “Birthday Letter” to Epstein has been released and the White House is playing defense, incoherently denying that the letter is Trump’s. They are at least a little bit unnerved by this issue.

    According to NBC the House has 215 of the 218 votes needed to force the release of the files. All the Democrats have signed, plus three Republican women (Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, and Nancy Mace); when the House passes this at the end of the month it still will need to pass the Senate. See NBC news on this.

    Call or write Susan Collins and Angus King asking them to pledge now to vote to force the release of these files when the issue comes to the Senate.

    From Yesterday

    Ask our Congressional representatives to demand that the Bureau of Health and Human Services change its guidance to allow all of us access to Covid 19 vaccines. Currently the access is limited to people 65 and older, and those with immunological conditions.

    Ask Governor Mills to join with other New England States to form a health alliance and issue vaccine guidance for our area as California, Oregon and Washington have done.

    Our health as individuals and as a community is at stake.

    Consider volunteering for Graham Platner’s campaign for US Senate. Go here

    Mark Saturday, October 18th for the next nationwide mass No Kings2 rally. Start talking to a young person you know to get them engaged in the resistance.

    TODAY’S ACTION (s)

    • From Earlier
    • Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics:  Why? This position is supposed to be non-partisan so economists can base their plans for the economy on it. • Get a poster/chalking campaign going in your neighborhood – there are telephone poles everywhere:  Indivisible Cumberland County has some great ones you can use – click here – this will lead you to an email you can send to Jennifer Morris. We have attached their poster ideas at the bottom of this email. Contact Karen for the Mid Maine Poster Campaign.Design your own signs and/or get an artist to design some for you. Remember poles belong to CMP and overtly political statements may be subject to legal action, however they seem to be ok with lost cats and dogs. Audacity in the Midcoast has called for Chalking “Truth Matters” on every public surface – roads and sidewalks! I would also recommend “Resist”.
    • Consider Boycotting American Companies that support the Israeli Military in Gaza and Illegal Israeli Settlements on the West Bank. Go here to get a list of companies to boycott.

I therefore think it is worthwhile to demonstrate support from various constituencies to maintain the DEI policies at the university.”

    There is a LOT of misinformation out there concerning Question 1, the voter suppression question that will be on the ballot THIS November. Help spread the word about how this is written to make voting more difficult for voters by restricting access to absentee ballots, a method of voting that thousands of Mainers use every election.

    Visit the Save Maine Absentee Voting site to learn more. Then speak to your friends, your family, your neighbors, and even strangers! And write a letter to the editor-there are letters weekly playing this down! This is part of the MAGA playbook and we can stop it!

    Do you want to become more involved? Would you like to help with the website and communications? How about helping to organize events, such as rallies and overpass actions or be a peacekeeper? Volunteer with Indivisible Bangor! We have had a huge influx of new members these past few months and to keep up, YOUR skills, connections, and input are needed! Weekly meetings on Zoom and monthly in-person.

    And now to the Mid Maine Indivisible morning Call to Action!

    ~~~
    Hi Folks, it’s the last Tuesday in August. Still no real rain. No outside fires, but some chances however to fan the flames of resistance.
    Susan Collins is coming to Searsport at 10 am TODAY.  Let’s show up in big numbers to protest her actions in the Senate. We are all invited to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of downtown roadwork.  10 am with Susan and town council members in front of Edwards and by the new Searsport Planters. Indivisible Waldo County is organizing the protest. (Do not be surprised if she no-shows once she gets wind of this – it doesn’t matter – the public anger shown at the protest will get coverage.)
    If you can’t get to Searsport this morning do one thing today.  Watch Robert Reich’s “Five Ways to Fight Facism”,
    it’s 4.5 minutes long and gives you a great outline of ways to be active and effective.
    TODAY’S ACTION (s)
    • Get on over to Searsport and show your anger at Collin’s response to Trump’s Budget Bill: So, we’re cutting ribbons at a road project that Susan helped fund, what about cuts to SNAP, Medicare, Green Energy, Healthcare for Vets, School lunch programs, food banks, purchases from farmers, rental assistance for seniors, weather forecasting, national parks, cancer care and cancer research, prescription drug benefits, Maine Care and the affordable care act that will result in 13.7 million people losing health insurance by 2034 including nearly 51,000 Mainers, leading to higher costs and rural hospitals closing!
    • Watch Robert Reich’s Five Ways to Fight Facism on Youtube: This is a great summation of what we can do in the face of the destruction we are witnessing. Go here to watch, take notes, and invite your friends to watch it as well!
    • From Yesterday
    • Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics:  Why? This position is supposed to be non-partisan so economists can base their plans for the economy on it. Antoni has made it clear he is a Trump loyalist, and will slant the figures he uses to show that Trump and Co. are doing a great job. Go here for a statement from the friends of the Bureau of Labor Statistics which lays out in non-partisan language how Senators should assess Antoni’s nomination.
    • Contact Avelo Airlines and ask them to “Drop the Deportation Contract” they currently have with ICE: Ground Avelo has all the information you need to call, email Avelo, and/or participate in an action at the Portland Airport – check with Cumberland Indivisible on this – they are planning actions on this issue. No airlines should be making money off deporting our neighbors and friends. Let’s stop this.
    • Set up a meeting with one member of our Congressional Delegation: I know it feels like it’s futile with some of them, but you never know where the tipping point is on any of these issues.Here are some of the guidelines that Indivisible Mid Maine uses for our meetings, and here is a list of some meetings we have organized and topics covered. Please contact Bonnie if you are interested in hearing more.
    • Get a poster/chalking campaign going in your neighborhood – there are telephone poles everywhere:  Indivisible Cumberland County has some great ones you can use – click here – this will lead you to an email you can send to Jennifer Morris. We have attached their poster ideas at the bottom of this email. Contact Karen for the Mid Maine Poster Campaign.Design your own signs and/or get an artist to design some for you. Remember poles belong to CMP and overtly political statements may be subject to legal action, however they seem to be ok with lost cats and dogs. Audacity in the Midcoast has called for Chalking “Truth Matters” on every public surface – roads and sidewalks!
    • Keep your calendar open for Labor Day Mass Action September 1st! Actions in Bangor, Waterville, Portland and many other locations; Go to Activate Maine for statewide actions.
    • If you are in the Mid Coast area consider joining Audacity – learn more here.
    • Stand Up for Palestinan Rights:  For events going on around the state in support of the Palestinian people go to Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights here.
    • If you know your Maine Representative or Senator is supportive of making ICE accountable in Maine,  ask them to join with Representative Cassie Julia to put in a bill to ensure proper identification of ICE agents acting in Maine. Lawmakers in California have introduced legislation requiring the identity and affiliation of ICE agents to be displayed while interacting with the public.
    ~~
    From Mid Maine Indivisible-
    Hi Folks, the last week in August begins! Next week the Senate goes back into session at 3 pm on Tuesday the second.
    This means you can still voice your opposition to  the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics. If you haven’t already please call Collins and King to say no to Antoni.
    Take the Signs of Solidarity pledge. Talk to local businesses about posting welcoming signs in their windows. After you sign the pledge, you can get images to download and print. We also have a sign you can duplicate for businesses attached below.
    From Mid Maine Indivisible-
    Action Friday August 22nd: Support Cumberland Indivisible Actions Regarding Deportation Flights + Keep the Pressure on Antoni Nomination
    Hi Folks, it’s Friday, and I’ve been unplugged all week.  I highly recommend this if you haven’t tried it – even for smaller amounts of time.
    Following up on the Avelo Airlines, Portland City Council has just accepted a Federal Grant of 21 Million Dollars which has a stipulation that the airport needs to cooperate with ICE. This is happening in airports around the country out of which kidnapped immigrants are getting flown to “detention centers”.  Check in with Cumberland Indivisible to see what actions they are planning around this. More on this news here.
    From Monday
    Avelo Airlines, flying now out of PORTLAND, Maine,  has a contract with ICE to deport folks who ICE has abducted. There is no due process for these people. They are flown to unknown countries and detention centers. Avelo is making big money off this unethical and fundamentally unconstitutional agreement. We need to make this a money-loser for Avelo. Take the “I Won’t Fly Avelo” pledge.  Call their leadership and tell them to drop the Deportation Contract with ICE. Deportations are happening now.  People are getting flown out of  Portland, Maine.  Let’s stop this. (This is a major campaign of National Indivisible)
    From last week:
    Consider putting up posters in your neck of the woods.  I have attached ideas for them from Jennifer, Cumberland Indivisible below.  If you don’t want to use paper, consider the Chalking Project proposed by Audacity. Chalk “Truth Matters” on public roads and sidewalks.
    Oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics. This nomination is still up in the air and a date for the Senate Vote on this has not been set yet!
    TODAY’S ACTION (s)
    • Contact Cumberland Indivisible to join actions around Portland Airport Deportation Situation: Indivisible has made stopping Avelo’s deportation flights a priority. Cumberland Indivisible should have a plan as well for working with the airport to stop cooperation with ICE.
    • Contact Avelo Airlines and ask them to “Drop the Deportation Contract” they currently have with ICE: Ground Avelo has all the information you need to call, email Avelo, and/or participate in an action at the Portland Airport – check with Cumberland Indivisible on this – they are planning actions on this issue. No airlines should be making money off deporting our neighbors and friends. Let’s stop this.
    • Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics:  Why? This position is supposed to be non-partisan so economists can base their plans for the economy on it. EJ has made it clear he is a Trump loyalist, and will slant the figures he uses to show that Trump and Co. are doing a great job. Go here for a statement from the friends of the Bureau of Labor Statistics which lays out in non-partisan language how Senators should assess Antoni’s nomination.
    • Set up a meeting with one member of our Congressional Delegation: I know it feels like it’s futile with some of them, but you never know where the tipping point is on any of these issues. Here are some of the guidelines that Indivisible Mid Maine uses for our meetings, and here is a list of some meetings we have organized and topics covered. Please contact Bonnie if you are interested in hearing more.
    • Get a poster/chalking campaign going in your neighborhood – there are telephone poles everywhere:  Indivisible Cumberland County has some great ones you can use – click here – this will lead you to an email you can send to Jennifer Morris. We have attached their poster ideas at the bottom of this email. Contact Karen for the Mid Maine Poster Campaign.Design your own signs and/or get an artist to design some for you. Remember poles belong to CMP and overtly political statements may be subject to legal action, however they seem to be ok with lost cats and dogs. Audacity in the Midcoast has called for Chalking “Truth Matters” on every public surface – roads and sidewalks!
    • Start a Poster/Chalking Campaign in Your Neighborhood! Go here for ideas and check in with Karen about a postering campaign in Mid Maine on this Tuesday at the Waterville UU Church.  Poster ideas also attached below.
    • Go to Activate Maine for statewide actions.
    • If you are in the Mid Coast area consider joining Audacity – learn more here.
    • Stand Up for Palestinan Rights:  For events going on around the state in support of the Palestinian people go to Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights here.
    • If you know your Maine Representative or Senator is supportive of making ICE accountable in Maine,  ask them to join with Representative Cassie Julia to put in a bill to ensure proper identification of ICE agents acting in Maine. Lawmakers in California have introduced legislation requiring the identity and affiliation of ICE agents to be displayed while interacting with the public.
    • Indivisible Actions – Register HereFor the One Million Rising action – register here  and watch the first session here. Watch the second session here.  Watch the Third Session hereConsider hosting a Community Resistance meeting using Indivisible outline and guidelines.
    • Keep your calendar open for Labor Day Mass Action September 1st!
    “Times are difficult globally; awakening is no longer a luxury or an ideal. It’s becoming critical. We don’t need to add more depression, more discouragement, or more anger to what’s already here. It’s becoming essential that we learn how to relate sanely with difficult times. The earth seems to be beseeching us to connect with joy and discover our innermost essence. This is the best way that we can benefit others.” ~ Pema Chodron
