    Hi Folks, big day Saturday!  Organizers said more than 3,100 protests were registered in all 50 states, which was about 500 more rallies than in October 2025. Anywhere between 8 and 9 million people were reported to have protested Saturday, which was roughly 2 million more than the previous demonstration. Maine had 57 rallies which may make us one of the highest rally to population states along with Vermont!!

    Top Action to Take Today

    Call your Congressional Representatives and ask them when they will be holding a town hall while they are on recess.  The Senate is in recess from March 27th to April 13th, and the House of Representatives will join them in recess from March 28th to April 14th, This time should be time they interact with their constituents directly. Find out from their offices where they plan to be and see if you can rsvp for any public meetings they will be holding. For people who never do town halls like Collins there may be some empty chair town halls scheduled by activist groups. (Please let me know if you get any information on public meetings or events they plan to be at as well as empty chair town halls.)

    More Actions Today if You Have the BandwidthWhile Congress is on recess, let’s concentrate on what is going on in the Maine legislature, we are entering the last three weeks of the session, so many bills will be headed to the Appropriations table once they are out of committee. I am putting Maine-based actions at the top in this section.Maine Related Actions    Fair Taxes in Maine: Go here to write a letter to our legislators if you can’t come. (MPA has the text for the letter, and you can personalize it.)There are several bills in the Maine Legislature that would raise the taxes on the super-rich and profitable corporations to help pay for the cuts in Federal spending for basic needs in Maine, These bills includeLD 1089LD 229and LD 1879to raise taxes on individuals with incomes over $1 million, modernize our tax brackets so people who make $60,000 aren’t paying at the same tax rate as people who make $600,000, and make sure that our state collects taxes from massive corporate profits.You will have a chance to have lunch with everyone after the morning is done.      Contact (call, email, message) your local representative and senator to support LD 307 “An Act Regarding Energy, Utilities and Technology.” Purpose of the Bill: LD 307 aims to establish a moratorium on new data centers with electrical loads of at least 20 megawatts. A “Data Center Coordination Council” would be created to monitor this issue. Data Centers can create serious issues around water quality, energy consumption, infrastructure strain, property values of adjacent properties, etc. Organizations that oppose their development include: Maine Audubon, Natural Resource Council of Maine, Protect Maine Beaches, some labor unions and public health organizations as well. (New Note and entrepreneur from Massachusetts is proposing an UNDERWATER data center off Passamaquoddy tribal lands at Sepayik, what could possibly go wrong??)     If you haven’t yet, please email Aaron Frey Maine’s Attorney General and ask him to join Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General in launching an anti trust suit against the companies that will be owned by one man – David Ellison – a huge Trump backer.  His company will own: CBS News, Tick Tock (where 1 in 5 Americans get their news), CNN, HBO (John Oliver),  and Comedy Central (John Stewart) as well as AI company Oracle.  An Anti-Trust suit is in order, and the States Attorney Generals can get one going. More at 5calls.org on this. At the same time request that he sue to find out what DOGE did to our Social Security data – a whistleblower is alleging that it has been transferred to a non-governmental actor.    Support LD 1666, “An Act to Include in the Ranked-choice Election Method for General and Special Elections the Offices of Governor, State Senator and State Representative and to Make Other Related Changes” which will allow us to use Ranked Choice Voting in our Gubernatorial Race, local Senate and House races coming up this Fall. The bill passed the House in February, and now is in the Maine Senate.  Please call your local Maine Senator and ask them to support this bill. It will be crucial for our Governor’s race this fall.     Ask your local representative and Senator to supportLD 2176“An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” LD 2176 aims to establish a legal framework for individuals who have been unlawfully detained during immigration enforcement actions. It seeks to ensure that these individuals can seek judicial review and recover damages under the Maine Civil Rights Act.  it, and send in testimony to support it – see Contact section below to do this.Contact your state representative and senator to support the bills to restore Wabanaki Sovereignty:   These two bills were heard in front of the Judiciary Committee, and there has not been a report out of the Committee so far. Ask your reps to vote in favor of these bills when they come to the floor of the House and Senate. LD 395, “An Act to Restore Access to Federal Laws Beneficial to the Wabanaki Nations”, would amend the law to allow the Wabanaki tribes (and the Mi’kmaq Nation) to benefit from existing and future federal laws that already apply to the 570-plus other federally recognized tribes. Get a copy of the bill here. It has been voted Ought to Pass as Amended by the Judiciary Committee.LD 785, “An Act to Enact the Remaining Recommendations of the Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act”, which would restore the Wabanaki Nations’ inherent right to self-govern under the same federal laws that apply to tribes elsewhere in the United States. Get a copy of the bill here. This had a divided report from the committee.Together, these two acts would put the Wabanaki Nations on equal footing with most, if not all, of the other Native American tribes in our country.     From the Maine League of Women Voters: Sign up to support fair elections with the Maine League of Women Voters here.Also, here is your annual reminder to check for Clean Elections on your tax return. Learn more here.  On the Maine Income Tax Form, Line 1, check a box to designate $3 to the Maine Clean Election Fund. Checking yes on the form does not impact your tax bill or refund in any way. Child care is a huge issue for working parents in Maine.  Contact your local Representative and Senator and ask them to support: LD 1955 will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program.LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff.LD 1414 will increase infant and toddler payment rates through the Child Care Affordability Program for eligible families.  To use the MPA’s Action Network to write a letter to your Rep and Senator on these supports for childcare in Maine go here. Remember Quality Child Care for all is great for the economy!!!!  
        Federal Actions:    Contact Senators King and Collins and ask them to refuse the Republican’s latest “offer” to fund DHS, (but not ICE), and then pass a bill to fund ICE (no reform), AND they want to pass the SAVE Act through Budget Reconciliation which only needs a simple majority to pass.  This is beyond despicable on the Republican’s part.  Thank King for standing firm on opposing funding for the Department of Homeland Security. All Congress needs to do is fund FEMA, TSA and Coast Guard separately, leaving ICE to work with it’s 75 billion dollars. (They are still getting paid, so no rush there.)For more on this go to 5calls.org.   Contact King, Collins, Pingree, and Golden to refuse the new Iran War funding request for 200 Billion Dollars!! This is more money than they cut from SNAP in 10 years, more money than was cut from the ACA.  It would be kind to say that the request is despicable.Indivisible has set up a quick email you can send to them here Get more background information and another way to contact them at 5calls.org. After you email your folks, call them with the same message. Note – Jared Golden is offering a new War Powers Act in the House – the specifics seem pretty good.  Ask Chellie Pingree to support this.        Contact King, Collins, Pingree or Golden to demand the following in relation to the Epstein Files: D

    emand the DOJ release all documents legally mandated by the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Ask them to demand as well that the DEA(Drug Enforcement Administration) release an UNREDACTED version of their 2015 “Project Chain Reaction” investigation into Epstein and 14 co-conspirators into a massive drug trafficking ring they were involved with. Todd Blanche has blocked this release. See the full details in Heather Cox Richardson’s post which is attached.  For more on this please go to 5calls.orgWe have not forgotten. (Where is a Daniel Ellsberg when we need them?)    Ask Representatives Golden and Pingree to support the  Prevent an Unconstitutional War in Cuba Act,”introduced by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The text provides an exception for the president to use force if there is an imminent threat. This puts Democrats and Republicans on record for opposing or supporting the unconstitutional Trump wars.       The SAVE act will continue being debated in the Senate.See Joyce Vance’s excellent sub stack attached below on the facts associated with the non-problem that the Save Act solves.C

    ontact Senator King  to continue voting NO on the SAVE act HR 7296 (narrowly passed the house) – , and let Susan Collins know that we oppose her support for this act and demand that she vote against ending the Filibuster and against passing the SAVE Act through Budget Reconciliation which  Republican Senators are now offering. The new SAVE Act adds new requirements that voters present a proof of citizenship both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot – 5calls.org has more on this.   While you are at it, let them know  to vote No on the MEGA Act, HR 7300 both of which are voter suppression efforts. .  “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) would ban mail in ballots, limit absentee voting Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact.  Trump is threatening not to sign any bills until this act is passed and is demanding that Senators end the Filibuster for this vote!

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to support a formal conflict-of-interest review before the Paramount deal closes (around March 20th). The government must require strong data firewalls and full transparency around Oracle’s (AI firm owned by the Ellison Family) role. 

    Epstein Files Related Actions

    See the More Bandwidth action above and check out Joyce Vance’s sub stack attached below about the Bank of America’s 72.5 million dollar settlement with survivors around the charge that the Bank enabled sex trafficking.

    To support Sexual Abuse Survivors:

    Ask your Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor and support “Virginia’s Law”, a billthat would  remove the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits related to sexual abuse and trafficking. This law, named after Virginia Guiffre an Epstein abuse survivor and outspoken advocate for justice,  would empower survivors by giving them a legal means to seek justice with not expiration date. More details on this law here

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to cosponsor S. 2746, the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act and to support the bill with members of the Senate Finance committee where the bill resides currently. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee (that oversees US banking) has been demanding access to Epstein’s finances. To this end, he introduced S. 2746  which would require the Secretary of the Treasury to produce suspicious activity reports relating to Jeffrey Epstein and his associates. More on this at Democracy Now   For a script and more information go to 5calls.orgSo far not a single perpetrator named in these files has been prosecuted. 

    ICE related Actions    Call or write Senator King and Collins and ask them to vote against funding ICE and CBP in the appropriations bill that is currently waiting for approval – 60 votes needed. More details on this at 5calls.org. Ask Collins not to support removing the Filibuster on this vote.    There is a move afoot to tax corporations who wish to build ICE prison camps in Maine at a higher level than regular corporate tax to offset the demands on local resources. Along with simply disallowing these camps through local zoning action and public outcry, cutting into the profit margin of these businesses is another way to dissuade them from trying to settle in Maine. ICE has 45 billion dollars to build/rent/purchase prison camp facilities – see a full report on this

    Contact our Congressional Representatives to: Claw back the 175 BILLION dollar slush fund that was approved in the “OBBA”(The Budget Bill Passed this Summer), for Immigration enforcement actions over the next four years. Collins + King both voted in favor of the Sanders Amendment which clawed back 75 Billion from ICE and CBP. Thank them for this, and then ask them to clawback this funding, and defund ICE and CBP until they meet standards of conduct for police professionals. For more information and a script go to 5calls.org for defunding ICE, and here for the 175 Billion Dollar Clawback. Call/email your local Representative and Senator to supportLD 2106 “An Act to Prohibit the Disclosure of Nonpublic Records Without Proper Judicial Review” to make sure ICE can’t enter private spaces in hospitals, schools, and childcare centers (learn more here ).  MPA has an ACTION TOOLKIT on this bill here.  You can still submit testimony on this bill here. The bill has not been voted out of committee yet, so there is still time to contact committee members to support it.Maine’s Attorney General Aaron Frey has started an ICE tip-line Citizens are urged to report intimidating and excessive federal enforcement behavior to CitizenReporting.OAG@maine.gov. “Emailers should be advised that any content sent may be subject to public dissemination under Maine’s Freedom of Access Laws.

    The Maine Immigrant’s  Rights Coalition has set up a resource hub on responding to ICE.  If you see what you identify as an ICE vehicle in your town call the ICE Watch hotline in Maine:207 544 9989. You can also text them a photo of what you believe to be an ICE vehicle, or any ICE actions in your area.

    Keep glyphosate out of our food supply: 

     Contact Representative Jared Golden and urge him to cosponsor HR 7601 to protect us from glyphosate poisoning by corporations who have no interest in our health or well-being. On February 20th, Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY-4) introduced HR 7601, the “No Immunity for Glyphosate Act.” Co-sponsors so far are Chellie Pingree (D-ME-1), Lauren Boebert (R-CO-4), Nancy Mace (R-SC-1), and Ro Khanna (D-CA-17). This legislation would prohibit federal funds from implementing the Executive Order Trump issued recently expanding the production of Glyphosphate and Phosphorous under the Defense Production act.

    ACA Related Actions

    Call/write Senators King and Collins to support extending the ACA tax credits as the House did on January 8th.  The House’s version is a “clean” extension with no amendments.  The Maine People’s Alliance makes this really easy, go here.     Insurance Crisis:  The ACA cuts are in the Senate to be voted on. Please contact Esther at the Maine People’s Alliance who is collecting personal testimony to support the passage of the ACA tax cuts.

    • Good News for Platner Supporters: An Emerson College Polling survey released on Thursday showed Platner leading Mills by about 27 points in the Senate Democratic contest, with Platner receiving 55 percent support while the Maine governor received 28 percent. A separate 17 percent said “someone else” or were undecided.
    • Contact the Maine Library Commission prior to their meeting April 6th – to advocate for state services to continue being available to rural libraries. To learn more about the parameters currently being discussed  for Maine libraries to receive state services go here.
    • LD 1383, An Act to Require State Divestment from Perpetrators of International Human Rights Violations has been tabled by the Committee on State and Local Government due to claims that it is anti-semitic, despite support from Jewish action groups.  Call your state Senator and Representative to support this bill. Go here for more information on this bill. Write a letter here to the State and Local Government Committee to pass this bill out of committee so the whole legislature can vote on it.

    8 MILLION+ STRONG!

    More than 8 million people joined together in solidarity to reject Donald Trump’s desire to be King. We broke the single-day protest record AGAIN! As DJ Khaled would say, “Another one!” – three for three record breaking protests. Everyone should take a moment to be proud of their work this weekend! I especially want to thank the volunteers that joined as Peacekeepers that helped ensure a safe and successful protest. I hope everyone was able to hear the Bangor Singing Resistance!

    I was privileged to hear from a few of you in person. It is so promising to hear the passion everyone has for our Democracy and country! I want to take a moment to share those voices here, but keep your eyes peeled for links to the full interviews coming soon!

    I love that we’re here with this camaraderie, but it shouldn’t have to rise to this. Every day it’s something new. I can’t really put a pinpoint on a specific thing – I just want life to be better. – Elisa, protestor

    Crowds of people protested Saturday against the war in Iran and President Trump’s actions, in “No Kings” rallies across the U.S. and in Europe. Minnesota took center stage, in what organizers said were mass demonstrations involving millions of people.

    Bath Iron Works says it has reached tentative agreement with union workers on new contract

    Starting on April 6, the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) will begin clearing and preparing the median between I-95’s northbound and southbound lanes to begin the process of replacing three major I-95 overpasses in Bangor.

    Susan Collins supports “Save America Act”

    Despite Mainers voting overwhelmingly to reject the voter suppression measures list in Question 1 last November, Senator Collins has decided that she supports even stricter voter suppression measures.The bill recently passed in the House and will be up for vote in the Senate soon. From Bangor Daily News:

    Trump has framed the bill as a national voter ID push, although it is slightly different than that. Democrats have argued it could still bar millions of people from voting, with the liberal Brennan Center for Justice saying 21 million Americans lack ready access to the documents that would be required to prove citizenship. Noncitizens are barred from voting in federal elections.

    UPDATE: LD 307 – Results on Data Center bill vote in the House

    THANK YOU to all of you who contacted your legislators about LD 307 – the data center bill.  [The vote in the Senate is still ahead – please contact your state senator if you haven’t already.]

    The corporate lobby has been very, very busy on opposing this bill. 

    LD 307 was debated and voted on in the House yesterday.

    First vote was in favor of the bill, 80-62.

    It is now tabled in the House for a possible amendment.  Governor Mills wants a carveout for a data center project in Jay. 

    This data center (LD 307) bill has huge cost implications.  The PJM region (mid Atlantic to Tennessee and Illinois) saw a tenfold increase last year in the capacity markets due to data centers, and customers were forced to pay $9.3 billion more in a single year due to these data center cost spikes.

    Petition: Sign “Iran War Concerns” Petition

    As United States citizens from various political perspectives, we have serious concerns about the current war in Iran and the justification that was used for initiating it.


    Petition: Sign “A Winning Democratic Strategy” Petition

    This petition lists a number of items that Democrats should pledge to do.


    Contact: Oppose the SAVE Act, MEGA Act, and Save America Act

    Take action on the SAVE Act, the MEGA Act, and the Save America Act. These anti-democratic bills could be fast-tracked through Congress, with the Save America Act passed in the U.S. House last week (SAVE Act passed in the House last year). These laws would require voters to prove their citizenship by showing a passport or birth certificate in order to register to vote — a requirement that would disenfranchise millions of voters. According to the Brennan Center, “21 million American citizens don’t have these documents readily available.”

    This bill would especially burden military voters, tribal voters, rural voters, and survivors of natural disasters. Plus, are you someone who’s married and changed your name? Or just someone who’s changed your name? You, too, could be affected. This could also affect Mainers living near the border who might have been born at a Canadian hospital to U.S. parents. 

    The MEGA Act would prohibit the use of mail-in voting (like absentee voting) and Ranked Choice Voting. The bill promotes voter roll purges and criminalizes clerical errors by election workers. It’s a package of terrible ideas built upon false, debunked theories that our elections are not secure. Maine has the right to conduct our elections, which are already fair, transparent, and accessible. Let’s reject this federal intervention.


    Letter: Tell Senate Democrats: Not a penny more for ICE and Border Patrol terror

    Across the country, millions of us have held the line for months demanding an end to the violence and terror of ICE and Border Patrol. As reports are circulating that Democrats are open to considering a deal being floated by the White House, it’s time to remind them that our demands have not changed: The only way ICE and Border Patrol get so much as a single penny more is if Democrats fail to lead.

    If reports about the proposal are true, this “offer” would constitute a blank check to Border Patrol and add to ICE’s already bloated budget, merely separating out “deportation operations” to be funded later. And this funding could very well come without any guardrails to curb ICE brutality and terror operations. Your Democratic Senators need to hear from you today: Any vote for this proposal is a vote to support ICE and Border Patrol’s terror, violence, and the authoritarian Trump agenda.


    Letter: Support childcare funding

    Next week, our legislators will be considering a number of bills that will make Maine’s childcare system stronger.

    This includes LD 1955, which will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program. This will provide immediate relief to children and families who are currently on waitlists, while also ensuring future families can access affordable childcare without delays as they work, pursue education, or engage in job training.

    LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff. And lastly, LD 1414 will increase infant and toddler payment rates through the Child Care Affordability Program for eligible families—making it easier for providers to offer affordable care for the youngest kids.

    Letter: Tell Congress: Stop President Trump’s illegal boat strikes

    The Trump administration is murdering civilians in international waters. We need answers so we can stop the killing.

    Since September, the Trump administration has ordered dozens of lethal strikes on civilian boats near Venezuela, killing over 150 people in clear violation of domestic and international law. For weeks, the Trump administration has promoted unsubstantiated, fear-mongering claims about the people being targeted, even though investigations show that the strikes killed fishermen who were simply trying to make a living for their families. The administration is reportedly relying on a secret legal memo that wrongly claims these killings are lawful and that anyone involved in the strikes would somehow be immune from prosecution for murder or other crimes, yet they refuse to make the memo public.


    Letter: Reject the Deportation & Detention Agenda

    The Big Ugly Bill funneled enough money for ICE and Border Patrol to fund their terror for years to come. We have already seen how dangerous this is in communities across the country. Now the administration is trying to use this money to do a massive expansion in detention facilities across the country. They have been buying up properties, and sometimes actually converting warehouses into camps that will hold human beings, often in dangerous and horrifying conditions. 

    We have a chance to stop this expansion in its tracks, in partnership with experts across the country, by speaking up and demanding our elected officials speak up too. This is already working – and even some Republicans are criticizing the warehouses – from Pennsylvania, to Tennessee, and beyond. So let’s keep up the pressure. 


    Letter: Write a letter to the editor

    Letters to the editor are published regularly in the local newspapers from Mainers who support the brutal tactics of the authoritarian Trump regime. Write a letter to set the record straight.     Contact: Call or email your legislators

    If you want an easy way to actually do something, check out 5calls.org. You enter your location, pick an issue you care about, and it gives you your representatives’ phone numbers and a script. That’s it. Calling your elected officials is one of the most effective forms of civic engagement there is!

    If you are more comfortable with sending emails to our Maine congressional delegation in Washington, click the links/buttons. This is a good option if you have lengthy comments or questions.

    Collaborative Community Art Project

    Deadline for project: April 18, 2026

    In celebration of the United States’ Semiquincentennial in 2026, Bangor Public Library is creating a large-scale American flag* mural compiled from 312 individual squares that together form a vibrant version of the American flag, a symbol of unity, shared purpose, hope, and love for our country.

    Be part of this project and take home a square. Then paint, sew, collage, and colorize according to the color code on the back. See some examples above! The squares are now available on the second floor in the Reference Lobby.

    Note that we need the completed squares back by April 18th.

    The squares will then be arranged into the American flag and sewn onto a large piece of canvas. The flag will be displayed in the Cyr Gallery during the library’s 250th celebration, June through July. We will bring it back out for the exhibit of the Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence in September.

    Artist Stephanie Krimmel and Mrs. Maynard’s Art Room blog inspired our project, and we look forward to sharing our version with the community this summer.

    Something tells me that Thomas Jefferson might be rolling over in his grave right about now if he could see what is happening to our country. Just today, it was announced that the Treasury intends to put Donald Trump’s signature on our currency… The same signature that appears in his weird and suggestive birthday love letter to his ol pal Jeffrey Epstein. Throw it on the pile, I suppose, with the rest of the Prince’s many trophies and baubles.

    And this is why we must attend No Kings TOMORROW! The Trump regime and the merry band of Republicans have seemingly no end in sight for the lunacy we are experiencing every day. We need to show them that enough is enough. We neither want nor need a Prince – or a King, or this Megalomaniac in the White House.

    We need universal healthcare. We need affordable housing. We need a stable economy to support our families and our community. We need leadership that will work for US and not for the Epstein class. Thomas Jefferson also wrote this in the Declaration of Independence:

    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

    And those needs sound a lot like what he was describing here. It’s not a matter of want or deserve. These are unalienable Rights. Big-R Rights! Guaranteed to all Americans. It’s time we remind our government that despite their best efforts, we still have those Rights, whether they like it or not.

    I hope you decide to stand with us at No Kings tomorrow. If not in Bangor, anywhere else that is near you. We are better together, and only together will we win what is rightfully ours. So come out and use your OUTSIDE VOICE to be heard tomorrow!

    I will be there and I want to hear your voice as well. I will be interviewing those of you who feel comfortable and want to be heard. We want to hear why Democracy matters to you. We want to hear what is your most important need to pursue your happiness!

    Could this weekend’s No Kings protests be the largest ever?

    With more than 3,100 events planned nationwide to protest President Donald Trump‘s actions and policies, organizers expect the No Kings protests to draw millions of Americans into the streets March 28.

    Two earlier No Kings protests brought out huge crowds, and organizers hope this event will be among the largest days of protest in U.S. history.

    The ACLU estimated that the No Kings protests in initial June 2025 drew about 5 million people to 1,800 events, and the October 2025 demonstrations drew 7 million to 2,500 events. The ACLU’s estimate for the June 2025 protests matched the findings of Harvard University’s Crowd Counting Consortium.

    Maine Senate Passes Landmark Privacy Bill

    The Maine State Senate today passed LD 1822, a bill to support Fourth Amendment rights and protect personal data by limiting sweeping digital surveillance. The legislation passed the House of Representatives on Feb. 10, 2026, and now faces enactment votes in both chambers.

Democrats have argued it could still bar millions of people from voting, with the liberal Brennan Center for Justice saying 21 million Americans lack ready access to the documents that would be required to prove citizenship. Noncitizens are barred from voting in federal elections.

    As United States citizens from various political perspectives, we have serious concerns about the current war in Iran and the justification that was used for initiating it.


    Petition: Sign “A Winning Democratic Strategy” Petition

    This petition lists a number of items that Democrats should pledge to do.


    Contact: Oppose the SAVE Act, MEGA Act, and Save America Act

    Take action on the SAVE Act, the MEGA Act, and the Save America Act. These anti-democratic bills could be fast-tracked through Congress, with the Save America Act passed in the U.S. House last week (SAVE Act passed in the House last year). These laws would require voters to prove their citizenship by showing a passport or birth certificate in order to register to vote — a requirement that would disenfranchise millions of voters. According to the Brennan Center, “21 million American citizens don’t have these documents readily available.”

    This bill would especially burden military voters, tribal voters, rural voters, and survivors of natural disasters. Plus, are you someone who’s married and changed your name? Or just someone who’s changed your name? You, too, could be affected. This could also affect Mainers living near the border who might have been born at a Canadian hospital to U.S. parents. 

    The MEGA Act would prohibit the use of mail-in voting (like absentee voting) and Ranked Choice Voting. The bill promotes voter roll purges and criminalizes clerical errors by election workers. It’s a package of terrible ideas built upon false, debunked theories that our elections are not secure. Maine has the right to conduct our elections, which are already fair, transparent, and accessible. Let’s reject this federal intervention.


    Letter: Tell Senate Democrats: Not a penny more for ICE and Border Patrol terror

    Across the country, millions of us have held the line for months demanding an end to the violence and terror of ICE and Border Patrol. As reports are circulating that Democrats are open to considering a deal being floated by the White House, it’s time to remind them that our demands have not changed: The only way ICE and Border Patrol get so much as a single penny more is if Democrats fail to lead.

    If reports about the proposal are true, this “offer” would constitute a blank check to Border Patrol and add to ICE’s already bloated budget, merely separating out “deportation operations” to be funded later. And this funding could very well come without any guardrails to curb ICE brutality and terror operations. Your Democratic Senators need to hear from you today: Any vote for this proposal is a vote to support ICE and Border Patrol’s terror, violence, and the authoritarian Trump agenda.


    Letter: Support childcare funding

    Next week, our legislators will be considering a number of bills that will make Maine’s childcare system stronger.

    This includes LD 1955, which will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program. This will provide immediate relief to children and families who are currently on waitlists, while also ensuring future families can access affordable childcare without delays as they work, pursue education, or engage in job training.

    LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff. And lastly, LD 1414 will increase infant and toddler payment rates through the Child Care Affordability Program for eligible families—making it easier for providers to offer affordable care for the youngest kids.

    Letter: Tell Congress: Stop President Trump’s illegal boat strikes

    The Trump administration is murdering civilians in international waters. We need answers so we can stop the killing.

    Since September, the Trump administration has ordered dozens of lethal strikes on civilian boats near Venezuela, killing over 150 people in clear violation of domestic and international law. For weeks, the Trump administration has promoted unsubstantiated, fear-mongering claims about the people being targeted, even though investigations show that the strikes killed fishermen who were simply trying to make a living for their families. The administration is reportedly relying on a secret legal memo that wrongly claims these killings are lawful and that anyone involved in the strikes would somehow be immune from prosecution for murder or other crimes, yet they refuse to make the memo public.


    Letter: Reject the Deportation & Detention Agenda

    The Big Ugly Bill funneled enough money for ICE and Border Patrol to fund their terror for years to come. We have already seen how dangerous this is in communities across the country. Now the administration is trying to use this money to do a massive expansion in detention facilities across the country. They have been buying up properties, and sometimes actually converting warehouses into camps that will hold human beings, often in dangerous and horrifying conditions. 

    We have a chance to stop this expansion in its tracks, in partnership with experts across the country, by speaking up and demanding our elected officials speak up too. This is already working – and even some Republicans are criticizing the warehouses – from Pennsylvania, to Tennessee, and beyond. So let’s keep up the pressure. 


    Letter: Write a letter to the editor

    Letters to the editor are published regularly in the local newspapers from Mainers who support the brutal tactics of the authoritarian Trump regime. Write a letter to set the record straight. That’s it. Calling your elected officials is one of the most effective forms of civic engagement there is!

    In 2025, millions of Americans came together in nonviolent protest to oppose the growing authoritarian actions of the Trump administration and affirm that this nation belongs to its people, not to kings. Since then, people have continued to rise up nonviolently against the Trump administration’s ongoing brutality and abuses of power, including the latest escalation in Minnesota. The No Kings Coalition is activating an immediate and ongoing nationwide digital organizing effort leading up to our next mass mobilization on March 28, including a flagship event in the Twin Cities.


    Susan Collins Empty Chair Town Hall

    Susan Collins hasn’t held a Town Hall in over 25 years. She is supposed to represent Mainers, yet refuses to face her constituents. That’s why Indivisible Bangor, alongside many other co-sponsors, is holding one for her. Enough is enough – it’s time YOUR voices are heard. We’ve invited Senator Collins to attend twice, but we’ve received no response.

    All are welcome to attend to speak or listen. Those that wish to speak will have two minutes to do so.

    Doors will open at 5:30pm and the Town Hall will take place from 6pm-8pm. Space is limited so all are encouraged to arrive early.


    Collaborative Community Art Project

    Deadline for project: April 18, 2026

    In celebration of the United States’ Semiquincentennial in 2026, Bangor Public Library is creating a large-scale American flag* mural compiled from 312 individual squares that together form a vibrant version of the American flag, a symbol of unity, shared purpose, hope, and love for our country.

    Be part of this project and take home a square. Then paint, sew, collage, and colorize according to the color code on the back. See some examples above! The squares are now available on the second floor in the Reference Lobby.

    Note that we need the completed squares back by April 18th.

    The squares will then be arranged into the American flag and sewn onto a large piece of canvas. The flag will be displayed in the Cyr Gallery during the library’s 250th celebration, June through July. We will bring it back out for the exhibit of the Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence in September.

    Artist Stephanie Krimmel and Mrs. Maynard’s Art Room blog inspired our project, and we look forward to sharing our version with the community this summer.

    “An Act Regarding Energy, Utilities and Technology.” Purpose of the Bill: LD 307 aims to establish a moratorium on new data centers with electrical loads of at least 20 megawatts. A “Data Center Coordination Council” would be created to monitor this issue. Data Centers can create serious issues around water quality, energy consumption, infrastructure strain, property values of adjacent properties, etc. Organizations that oppose their development include: Maine Audubon, Natural Resource Council of Maine, Protect Maine Beaches, some labor unions and public health organizations as well. (New Note and entrepreneur from Massachusetts is proposing an UNDERWATER data center off Passamaquoddy tribal lands at Sepayik, what could possibly go wrong??)

        The SAVE act will continue being debated in the Senate.C

    ontact Senator King  to continue voting NO on the SAVE act HR 7296 (narrowly passed the house) – , and let Susan Collins know that we oppose her support for this act and demand that she vote against ending the Filibuster and against passing the SAVE Act through Budget Reconciliation which  Republican Senators are now offering. The new SAVE Act adds new requirements that voters present a proof of citizenship both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot – 5calls.org has more on this.   While you are at it, let them know  to vote No on the MEGA Act, HR 7300 both of which are voter suppression efforts. .  “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) would ban mail in ballots, limit absentee voting Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact.  Trump is threatening not to sign any bills until this act is passed and is demanding that Senators end the Filibuster for this vote!    If you haven’t yet, please email Aaron Frey Maine’s Attorney General and ask him to join Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General in launching an anti trust suit against the companies that will be owned by one man – David Ellison – a huge Trump backer.  His company will own: CBS News, Tick Tock (where 1 in 5 Americans get their news), CNN, HBO (John Oliver),  and Comedy Central (John Stewart) as well as AI company Oracle.  An Anti-Trust suit is in order, and the States Attorney Generals can get one going. More at 5calls.org on this. At the same time request that he sue to find out what DOGE did to our Social Security data – a whistleblower is alleging that it has been transferred to a non-governmental actor.

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to support a formal conflict-of-interest review before the Paramount deal closes (around March 20th). The government must require strong data firewalls and full transparency around Oracle’s (AI firm owned by the Ellison Family) role. 

    Maine Related Actions    Support LD 

    1666, “An Act to Include in the Ranked-choice Election Method for General and Special Elections the Offices of Governor, State Senator and State Representative and to Make Other Related Changes” which will allow us to use Ranked Choice Voting in our Gubernatorial Race, local Senate and House races coming up this Fall. The bill passed the House in February, and now is in the Maine Senate.  Please call your local Maine Senator and ask them to support this bill. It will be crucial for our Governor’s race this fall.     Ask your local representative and Senator to supportLD 2176

    “An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” LD 2176 aims to establish a legal framework for individuals who have been unlawfully detained during immigration enforcement actions. It seeks to ensure that these individuals can seek judicial review and recover damages under the Maine Civil Rights Act.  it, and send in testimony to support it – see Contact section below to do this.Contact your state representative and senator to support the bills to restore Wabanaki Sovereignty:   These two bills were heard in front of the Judiciary Committee, and there has not been a report out of the Committee so far. Ask your reps to vote in favor of these bills when they come to the floor of the House and Senate. 

    LD 395, “An Act to Restore Access to Federal Laws Beneficial to the Wabanaki Nations”, would amend the law to allow the Wabanaki tribes (and the Mi’kmaq Nation) to benefit from existing and future federal laws that already apply to the 570-plus other federally recognized tribes. Get a copy of the bill here. It has been voted Ought to Pass as Amended by the Judiciary Committee.

    LD 785, “An Act to Enact the Remaining Recommendations of the Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act”, which would restore the Wabanaki Nations’ inherent right to self-govern under the same federal laws that apply to tribes elsewhere in the United States. Get a copy of the bill here. This had a divided report from the committee.

    Together, these two acts would put the Wabanaki Nations on equal footing with most, if not all, of the other Native American tribes in our country. Go here for a toolkit from the Wabanaki Alliance on taking action on these bills.

    To support Sexual Abuse Survivors:

    Ask your Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor and support “Virginia’s Law”, a billthat would  remove the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits related to sexual abuse and trafficking. This law, named after Virginia Guiffre an Epstein abuse survivor and outspoken advocate for justice,  would empower survivors by giving them a legal means to seek justice with not expiration date. More details on this law here

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to cosponsor S. 2746, the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act and to support the bill with members of the Senate Finance committee where the bill resides currently. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee (that oversees US banking) has been demanding access to Epstein’s finances.     ICE related Actions    Call or write Senator King and Collins and ask them to vote against funding ICE and CBP in the appropriations bill that is currently waiting for approval – 60 votes needed. Ask Collins not to support removing the Filibuster on this vote.    There is a move afoot to tax corporations who wish to build ICE prison camps in Maine at a higher level than regular corporate tax to offset the demands on local resources. Along with simply disallowing these camps through local zoning action and public outcry, cutting into the profit margin of these businesses is another way to dissuade them from trying to settle in Maine. ICE has 45 billion dollars to build/rent/purchase prison camp facilities – see a full report on this

    Contact our Congressional Representatives to: Claw back the 175 BILLION dollar slush fund that was approved in the “OBBA”(The Budget Bill Passed this Summer), for Immigration enforcement actions over the next four years. Collins + King both voted in favor of the Sanders Amendment which clawed back 75 Billion from ICE and CBP. Thank them for this, and then ask them to clawback this funding, and defund ICE and CBP until they meet standards of conduct for police professionals.     The Maine Immigrant’s  Rights Coalition has set up a resource hub on responding to ICE.  If you see what you identify as an ICE vehicle in your town call the ICE Watch hotline in Maine:207 544 9989. You can also text them a photo of what you believe to be an ICE vehicle, or any ICE actions in your area.

    Keep glyphosate out of our food supply: 

     Contact Representative Jared Golden and urge him to cosponsor HR 7601 to protect us from glyphosate poisoning by corporations who have no interest in our health or well-being. On February 20th, Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY-4) introduced HR 7601, the “No Immunity for Glyphosate Act.” Co-sponsors so far are Chellie Pingree (D-ME-1), Lauren Boebert (R-CO-4), Nancy Mace (R-SC-1), and Ro Khanna (D-CA-17). This legislation would prohibit federal funds from implementing the Executive Order Trump issued recently expanding the production of Glyphosphate and Phosphorous under the Defense Production act.

    • Good News for Platner Supporters: An Emerson College Polling survey released on Thursday showed Platner leading Mills by about 27 points in the Senate Democratic contest, with Platner receiving 55 percent support while the Maine governor received 28 percent. A separate 17 percent said “someone else” or were undecided.

    • LD 1383, An Act to Require State Divestment from Perpetrators of International Human Rights Violations has been tabled by the Committee on State and Local Government due to claims that it is anti-semitic, despite support from Jewish action groups.  Call your state Senator and Representative to support this bill.     “An Act Regarding Energy, Utilities and Technology.” Purpose of the Bill: LD 307 aims to establish a moratorium on new data centers with electrical loads of at least 20 megawatts. A “Data Center Coordination Council” would be created to monitor this issue. Data Centers can create serious issues around water quality, energy consumption, infrastructure strain, property values of adjacent properties, etc. Organizations that oppose their development include: Maine Audubon, Natural Resource Council of Maine, Protect Maine Beaches, some labor unions and public health organizations as well. (New Note and entrepreneur from Massachusetts is proposing an UNDERWATER data center off Passamaquoddy tribal lands at Sepayik, what could possibly go wrong??)

        The SAVE act will continue being debated in the Senate this week.C

    ontact Senator King  to continue voting NO on the SAVE act HR 7296 (narrowly passed the house) – , and let Susan Collins know that we oppose her support for this act and demand that she vote against ending the Filibuster and against passing the SAVE Act through Budget Reconciliation which  Republican Senators are now offering. The new SAVE Act adds new requirements that voters present a proof of citizenship both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot – 5calls.org has more on this.   While you are at it, let them know  to vote No on the MEGA Act, HR 7300 both of which are voter suppression efforts. .  “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) would ban mail in ballots, limit absentee voting Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact.  Trump is threatening not to sign any bills until this act is passed and is demanding that Senators end the Filibuster for this vote!    If you haven’t yet, please email Aaron Frey Maine’s Attorney General and ask him to join Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General in launching an anti trust suit against the companies that will be owned by one man – David Ellison – a huge Trump backer.  His company will own: CBS News, Tick Tock (where 1 in 5 Americans get their news), CNN, HBO (John Oliver),  and Comedy Central (John Stewart) as well as AI company Oracle.  An Anti-Trust suit is in order, and the States Attorney Generals can get one going. More at 5calls.org on this. At the same time request that he sue to find out what DOGE did to our Social Security data – a whistleblower is alleging that it has been transferred to a non-governmental actor.

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to support a formal conflict-of-interest review before the Paramount deal closes (around March 20th). The government must require strong data firewalls and full transparency around Oracle’s (AI firm owned by the Ellison Family) role. 

        Markwayne Mullins Nomination: Contact Senator Collins to tell her you disagree with her support for MwM and thank King for opposing his appointment as head DHS;  he is a hard liner on immigration issues – 5calls.org says: He co-sponsored the Laken Riley Actdefended ICE agents after the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and said that children who are U.S. citizens should be deported if their parents are. He is an election denier, and will be unlikely to reform ICE and CBP.

    1666, “An Act to Include in the Ranked-choice Election Method for General and Special Elections the Offices of Governor, State Senator and State Representative and to Make Other Related Changes” which will allow us to use Ranked Choice Voting in our Gubernatorial Race, local Senate and House races coming up this Fall. The bill passed the House in February, and now is in the Maine Senate.  Please call your local Maine Senator and ask them to support this bill.     “An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” LD 2176 aims to establish a legal framework for individuals who have been unlawfully detained during immigration enforcement actions. It seeks to ensure that these individuals can seek judicial review and recover damages under the Maine Civil Rights Act.  it, and send in testimony to support it – see Contact section below to do this.Contact your state representative and senator to support the bills to restore Wabanaki Sovereignty:   These two bills were heard in front of the Judiciary Committee, and there has not been a report out of the Committee so far. Ask your reps to vote in favor of these bills when they come to the floor of the House and Senate. 

    LD 395, “An Act to Restore Access to Federal Laws Beneficial to the Wabanaki Nations”, would amend the law to allow the Wabanaki tribes (and the Mi’kmaq Nation) to benefit from existing and future federal laws that already apply to the 570-plus other federally recognized tribes. Get a copy of the bill here. It has been voted Ought to Pass as Amended by the Judiciary Committee.

    LD 785, “An Act to Enact the Remaining Recommendations of the Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act”, which would restore the Wabanaki Nations’ inherent right to self-govern under the same federal laws that apply to tribes elsewhere in the United States. Get a copy of the bill here. This had a divided report from the committee.

Checking yes on the form does not impact your tax bill or refund in any way. Child care is a huge issue for working parents in Maine.  Contact your local Representative and Senator and ask them to support: LD 1955 will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program.

    LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff.

     Contact Representative Jared Golden and urge him to cosponsor HR 7601 to protect us from glyphosate poisoning by corporations who have no interest in our health or well-being. On February 20th, Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY-4) introduced HR 7601, the “No Immunity for Glyphosate Act.” Co-sponsors so far are Chellie Pingree (D-ME-1), Lauren Boebert (R-CO-4), Nancy Mace (R-SC-1), and Ro Khanna (D-CA-17). This legislation would prohibit federal funds from implementing the Executive Order Trump issued recently expanding the production of Glyphosphate and Phosphorous under the Defense Production act.

    LD 1879to raise taxes on individuals with incomes over $1 million, modernize our tax brackets so people who make $60,000 aren’t paying at the same tax rate as people who make $600,000, and make sure that our state collects taxes from massive corporate profits.

    emand the DOJ release all documents legally mandated by the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Ask them to demand as well that the DEA(Drug Enforcement Administration) release an UNREDACTED version of their 2015 “Project Chain Reaction” investigation into Epstein and 14 co-conspirators into a massive drug trafficking ring they were involved with.     “An Act Regarding Energy, Utilities and Technology.” Purpose of the Bill: LD 307 aims to establish a moratorium on new data centers with electrical loads of at least 20 megawatts. A “Data Center Coordination Council” would be created to monitor this issue. Data Centers can create serious issues around water quality, energy consumption, infrastructure strain, property values of adjacent properties, etc. Organizations that oppose their development include: Maine Audubon, Natural Resource Council of Maine, Protect Maine Beaches, some labor unions and public health organizations as well.

        The SAVE act will continue being debated in the Senate this week.C

    ontact Senator King  to continue voting NO on the SAVE act HR 7296 (narrowly passed the house) – , and let Susan Collins know that we oppose her support for this act and demand that she not vote to end the Filibuster which some Republican Senators are now considering. The new SAVE Act adds new requirements that voters present a proof of citizenship both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot – 5calls.org has more on this.   While you are at it, let them know  to vote No on the MEGA Act, HR 7300 both of which are voter suppression efforts. .  “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) would ban mail in ballots, limit absentee voting Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact.  Trump is threatening not to sign any bills until this act is passed and is demanding that Senators end the Filibuster for this vote!    If you haven’t yet, please email Aaron Frey Maine’s Attorney General and ask him to join Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General in launching an anti trust suit against the companies that will be owned by one man – David Ellison – a huge Trump backer.  His company will own: CBS News, Tick Tock (where 1 in 5 Americans get their news), CNN, HBO (John Oliver),  and Comedy Central (John Stewart) as well as AI company Oracle.  An Anti-Trust suit is in order, and the States Attorney Generals can get one going. More at 5calls.org on this. At the same time request that he sue to find out what DOGE did to our Social Security data – a whistleblower is alleging that it has been transferred to a non-governmental actor.

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to support a formal conflict-of-interest review before the Paramount deal closes (around March 20th). The government must require strong data firewalls and full transparency around Oracle’s (AI firm owned by the Ellison Family) role. 

        Contact Senator King and thank him for standing firm on opposing funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Ask Collins to do the same!  Ask him to add to the list of demands for ICE reform that the Feds cooperate with Minnesota law enforcement in the investigation into the deaths of Alex Preti and Renee Good. Let the Republicans take the heat for TSA workers not getting paid, and FEMA being unfunded.

        Markwayne Mullins Nomination: Contact Senator Collins to tell her you disagree with her support for MwM and thank King for opposing his appointment as head DHS;  he is a hard liner on immigration issues – 5calls.org says: He co-sponsored the Laken Riley Actdefended ICE agents after the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and said that children who are U.S. citizens should be deported if their parents are. He is an election denier, and will be unlikely to reform ICE and CBP. 

    Maine Related Actions    Support LD 

    1666, “An Act to Include in the Ranked-choice Election Method for General and Special Elections the Offices of Governor, State Senator and State Representative and to Make Other Related Changes” which will allow us to use Ranked Choice Voting in our Gubernatorial Race, local Senate and House races coming up this Fall. The bill passed the House in February, and now is in the Maine Senate.  Please call your local Maine Senator and ask them to support this bill. It will be crucial for our Governor’s race this fall.     Ask your local representative and Senator to supportLD 2176

    “An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” LD 2176 aims to establish a legal framework for individuals who have been unlawfully detained during immigration enforcement actions. It seeks to ensure that these individuals can seek judicial review and recover damages under the Maine Civil Rights Act.  it, and send in testimony to support it – see Contact section below to do this.Contact your state representative and senator to support the bills to restore Wabanaki Sovereignty:   These two bills were heard in front of the Judiciary Committee, and there has not been a report out of the Committee so far. Ask your reps to vote in favor of these bills when they come to the floor of the House and Senate. 

    LD 395, “An Act to Restore Access to Federal Laws Beneficial to the Wabanaki Nations”, would amend the law to allow the Wabanaki tribes (and the Mi’kmaq Nation) to benefit from existing and future federal laws that already apply to the 570-plus other federally recognized tribes. Get a copy of the bill here. It has been voted Ought to Pass as Amended by the Judiciary Committee.

    LD 785, “An Act to Enact the Remaining Recommendations of the Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act”, which would restore the Wabanaki Nations’ inherent right to self-govern under the same federal laws that apply to tribes elsewhere in the United States. Get a copy of the bill here. This had a divided report from the committee.

    Together, these two acts would put the Wabanaki Nations on equal footing with most, if not all, of the other Native American tribes in our country. Go here for a toolkit from the Wabanaki Alliance on taking action on these bills. 

    From the Maine League of Women Voters: Sign up to support fair elections with the Maine League of Women Voters here.Also, here is your annual reminder to check for Clean Elections on your tax return. Learn more here.  On the Maine Income Tax Form, Line 1, check a box to designate $3 to the Maine Clean Election Fund. Checking yes on the form does not impact your tax bill or refund in any way. Child care is a huge issue for working parents in Maine.  Contact your local Representative and Senator and ask them to support: LD 1955 will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program.

    LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff.

    LD 1414 will increase infant and toddler payment rates through the Child Care Affordability Program for eligible families.  To use the MPA’s Action Network to write a letter to your Rep and Senator on these supports for childcare in Maine go here.     To support Sexual Abuse Survivors:

    Ask your Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor and support “Virginia’s Law”, a billthat would  remove the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits related to sexual abuse and trafficking. This law, named after Virginia Guiffre an Epstein abuse survivor and outspoken advocate for justice,  would empower survivors by giving them a legal means to seek justice with not expiration date. More details on this law here

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to cosponsor S. 2746, the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act and to support the bill with members of the Senate Finance committee where the bill resides currently. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee (that oversees US banking) has been demanding access to Epstein’s finances. To this end, he introduced S. 2746  which would require the Secretary of the Treasury to produce suspicious activity reports relating to Jeffrey Epstein and his associates. More on this at Democracy Now   For a script and more information go to 5calls.orgSo far not a single perpetrator named in these files has been prosecuted. 

    ICE related Actions    Call or write Senator King and Collins and ask them to vote against funding ICE and CBP in the appropriations bill that is currently waiting for approval – 60 votes needed. Ask Collins not to support removing the Filibuster on this vote.    There is a move afoot to tax corporations who wish to build ICE prison camps in Maine at a higher level than regular corporate tax to offset the demands on local resources. Along with simply disallowing these camps through local zoning action and public outcry, cutting into the profit margin of these businesses is another way to dissuade them from trying to settle in Maine. ICE has 45 billion dollars to build/rent/purchase prison camp facilities – see a full report on this

    Contact our Congressional Representatives to: Claw back the 175 BILLION dollar slush fund that was approved in the “OBBA”(The Budget Bill Passed this Summer), for Immigration enforcement actions over the next four years. Collins + King both voted in favor of the Sanders Amendment which clawed back 75 Billion from ICE and CBP. Thank them for this, and then ask them to clawback this funding, and defund ICE and CBP until they meet standards of conduct for police professionals.     Welcome back for another week with exciting updates! Let’s dive right into it today:

    MSNA: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

    If you haven’t heard yet, the MSNA nurses strike has been called off! They have reached a tentative agreement with Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) in their union contract.

    “EMMC came at us particularly hard this time around,” said Erin Oberson, a labor and delivery RN and member of the bargaining team. “Until the very last minute, they insisted on huge takeaways from us. They also wanted to decrease paid time off (PTO) and eliminate the pension for new nurses. Not only did we beat back every one of their concessionary demands, but we won new safety protections for all nurses and patients, and made real economic improvements as well.”

    This is an incredible victory for MSNA, and really for us all. This will help to ensure our nurses can continue to be the rock stars they are and protect their benefits and continue providing the best care possible. Let’s take a moment to celebrate this as an important step in the fight to improve healthcare, and to highlight how important it is that we work together.

    If you have the opportunity to organize or join a union, or organize your community, there has never been a more important time to do so. The Trump regime, and quite honestly some in the Democratic party, have made it clear that we are going to have to work together to save ourselves and the country – and that is the ONLY way we win!

    I have found that a number of people are interested in learning more about how they can start organizing and what other organizations are available to work with in the area.     Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were deployed at some U.S. airports, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced, as travelers across the United States face significant disruptions and TSA agent absences soared as workers work without pay amid the partial government shutdown.

    Maine Senate Passes Landmark Privacy Bill

    The Maine State Senate today passed LD 1822, a bill to support Fourth Amendment rights and protect personal data by limiting sweeping digital surveillance. The legislation passed the House of Representatives on Feb. 10, 2026, and now faces enactment votes in both chambers.

    Trump puts off threat to bomb Iran power grid; three countries reportedly mediating

    U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he had given orders to postpone any military strikes against Iranian power plants for five days, hours ahead of a deadline that threatened further ​escalation in the conflict now in its fourth week.

    Trump added in a post on his Truth Social platform that the U.S. and Iran had had “VERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE” conversations over the past two ‌days about a “COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION OF HOSTILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST”.

    Susan Collins supports “Save America Act”

    Despite Mainers voting overwhelmingly to reject the voter suppression measures list in Question 1 last November, Senator Collins has decided that she supports even stricter voter suppression measures.The bill recently passed in the House and will be up for vote in the Senate soon. From Bangor Daily News:

    Trump has framed the bill as a national voter ID push, although it is slightly different than that. Democrats have argued it could still bar millions of people from voting, with the liberal Brennan Center for Justice saying 21 million Americans lack ready access to the documents that would be required to prove citizenship. Noncitizens are barred from voting in federal elections.

    Events are easy to attend and only require a small amount of time investment – some you can even attend from the comfort of your own couch! Take a look at the upcoming events below and register.


    Petition: Sign “Iran War Concerns” Petition

    As United States citizens from various political perspectives, we have serious concerns about the current war in Iran and the justification that was used for initiating it.


    Petition: Sign “A Winning Democratic Strategy” Petition

    This petition lists a number of items that Democrats should pledge to do.


    Contact: Oppose the SAVE Act, MEGA Act, and Save America Act

    Take action on the SAVE Act, the MEGA Act, and the Save America Act. These anti-democratic bills could be fast-tracked through Congress, with the Save America Act passed in the U.S. House last week (SAVE Act passed in the House last year). These laws would require voters to prove their citizenship by showing a passport or birth certificate in order to register to vote — a requirement that would disenfranchise millions of voters. According to the Brennan Center, “21 million American citizens don’t have these documents readily available.”

    This bill would especially burden military voters, tribal voters, rural voters, and survivors of natural disasters. Plus, are you someone who’s married and changed your name? Or just someone who’s changed your name? You, too, could be affected. This could also affect Mainers living near the border who might have been born at a Canadian hospital to U.S. parents. 

    The MEGA Act would prohibit the use of mail-in voting (like absentee voting) and Ranked Choice Voting. The bill promotes voter roll purges and criminalizes clerical errors by election workers. It’s a package of terrible ideas built upon false, debunked theories that our elections are not secure. Maine has the right to conduct our elections, which are already fair, transparent, and accessible. Let’s reject this federal intervention.


    Letter: Tax the wealthy to fund programs for Mainers!

    The state legislature is starting its budget process – where the rubber hits the road in terms of what our state really values. Here’s what your legislators need to hear from you:

    • DON’T conform to the Trump administration’s corporate tax giveaways, as the right is pressuring them to do
    • Support bills in the legislature, like LD 1089, LD 229, and LD 1879, to raise taxes on individuals with incomes over $1 million, modernize our tax brackets so people who make $60,000 aren’t paying at the same tax rate as people who make $600,000, and make sure that our state collects taxes from massive corporate profits. These could pass as bills, or end up in the budget – either way, legislators should fight for them!

    Letter: Support childcare funding

    Next week, our legislators will be considering a number of bills that will make Maine’s childcare system stronger.

    This includes LD 1955, which will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program. This will provide immediate relief to children and families who are currently on waitlists, while also ensuring future families can access affordable childcare without delays as they work, pursue education, or engage in job training.

    LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff. And lastly, LD 1414 will increase infant and toddler payment rates through the Child Care Affordability Program for eligible families—making it easier for providers to offer affordable care for the youngest kids.

    Letter: Tell Congress: Stop President Trump’s illegal boat strikes

    The Trump administration is murdering civilians in international waters. We need answers so we can stop the killing.

    Since September, the Trump administration has ordered dozens of lethal strikes on civilian boats near Venezuela, killing over 150 people in clear violation of domestic and international law. For weeks, the Trump administration has promoted unsubstantiated, fear-mongering claims about the people being targeted, even though investigations show that the strikes killed fishermen who were simply trying to make a living for their families. The administration is reportedly relying on a secret legal memo that wrongly claims these killings are lawful and that anyone involved in the strikes would somehow be immune from prosecution for murder or other crimes, yet they refuse to make the memo public.


    Letter: Reject the Deportation & Detention Agenda

    The Big Ugly Bill funneled enough money for ICE and Border Patrol to fund their terror for years to come. We have already seen how dangerous this is in communities across the country. Now the administration is trying to use this money to do a massive expansion in detention facilities across the country. They have been buying up properties, and sometimes actually converting warehouses into camps that will hold human beings, often in dangerous and horrifying conditions. 

    We have a chance to stop this expansion in its tracks, in partnership with experts across the country, by speaking up and demanding our elected officials speak up too. This is already working – and even some Republicans are criticizing the warehouses – from Pennsylvania, to Tennessee, and beyond. So let’s keep up the pressure. 


    Letter: Write a letter to the editor

    Letters to the editor are published regularly in the local newspapers from Mainers who support the brutal tactics of the authoritarian Trump regime. Write a letter to set the record straight.     Contact: Call or email your legislators

    If you want an easy way to actually do something, check out 5calls.org. You enter your location, pick an issue you care about, and it gives you your representatives’ phone numbers and a script. That’s it. Calling your elected officials is one of the most effective forms of civic engagement there is!

    In 2025, millions of Americans came together in nonviolent protest to oppose the growing authoritarian actions of the Trump administration and affirm that this nation belongs to its people, not to kings. Since then, people have continued to rise up nonviolently against the Trump administration’s ongoing brutality and abuses of power, including the latest escalation in Minnesota. The No Kings Coalition is activating an immediate and ongoing nationwide digital organizing effort leading up to our next mass mobilization on March 28, including a flagship event in the Twin Cities.

    Susan Collins hasn’t held a Town Hall in over 25 years. She is supposed to represent Mainers, yet refuses to face her constituents. That’s why Indivisible Bangor, alongside many other co-sponsors, is holding one for her. Enough is enough – it’s time YOUR voices are heard. We’ve invited Senator Collins to attend twice, but we’ve received no response.

    All are welcome to attend to speak or listen. Those that wish to speak will have two minutes to do so.

    Doors will open at 5:30pm and the Town Hall will take place from 6pm-8pm. Space is limited so all are encouraged to arrive early.


    Collaborative Community Art Project

    Deadline for project: April 18, 2026

    In celebration of the United States’ Semiquincentennial in 2026, Bangor Public Library is creating a large-scale American flag* mural compiled from 312 individual squares that together form a vibrant version of the American flag, a symbol of unity, shared purpose, hope, and love for our country.

    Be part of this project and take home a square. Then paint, sew, collage, and colorize according to the color code on the back. See some examples above! The squares are now available on the second floor in the Reference Lobby.

    Note that we need the completed squares back by April 18th.

    The squares will then be arranged into the American flag and sewn onto a large piece of canvas. The flag will be displayed in the Cyr Gallery during the library’s 250th celebration, June through July. We will bring it back out for the exhibit of the Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence in September.

    Artist Stephanie Krimmel and Mrs. Maynard’s Art Room blog inspired our project, and we look forward to sharing our version with the community this summer.

    Contact Senator Collins to oppose the appointment of Markwayne Mullins to head DHS;  he is a hard liner on immigration issues – 5calls.org says:  He co-sponsored the Laken Riley Actdefended ICE agents after the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and said that children who are U.S. citizens should be deported if their parents are. He is an election denier, and will be unlikely to reform ICE and CBP. Hearings on his appointment continue this week. Go here for a full run down on the hearings so far. If Collins, Murkowski and Rand Paul and one other Republican vote no, his nomination will be done.

    emand the DOJ release all documents legally mandated by the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Ask them to demand as well that the DEA(Drug Enforcement Administration) release an UNREDACTED version of their 2015 “Project Chain Reaction” investigation into Epstein and 14 co-conspirators into a massive drug trafficking ring they were involved with. Todd Blanche has blocked this release. See the full details in Heather Cox Richardson’s post which is attached.  For more on this please go to 5calls.orgWe have not forgotten. (Where is a Daniel Ellsberg when we need them?)     Contact (call, email, message) your local representative and senator to support LD 307 

    “An Act Regarding Energy, Utilities and Technology.” Purpose of the Bill: LD 307 aims to establish a moratorium on new data centers with electrical loads of at least 20 megawatts. A “Data Center Coordination Council” would be created to monitor this issue. Data Centers can create serious issues around water quality, energy consumption, infrastructure strain, property values of adjacent properties, etc. Organizations that oppose their development include: Maine Audubon, Natural Resource Council of Maine, Protect Maine Beaches, some labor unions and public health organizations as well.

        The SAVE act will continue being debated in the Senate this week.C

    ontact Senator King  to continue voting NO on the SAVE act HR 7296 (narrowly passed the house) – , and let Susan Collins know that we oppose her support for this act and demand that she not vote to end the Filibuster which some Republican Senators are now considering. The new SAVE Act adds new requirements that voters present a proof of citizenship both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot – 5calls.org has more on this.   While you are at it, let them know  to vote No on the MEGA Act, HR 7300 both of which are voter suppression efforts. .  “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) would ban mail in ballots, limit absentee voting Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact.  Trump is threatening not to sign any bills until this act is passed and is demanding that Senators end the Filibuster for this vote!    If you haven’t yet, please email Aaron Frey Maine’s Attorney General and ask him to join Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General in launching an anti trust suit against the companies that will be owned by one man – David Ellison – a huge Trump backer.  His company will own: CBS News, Tick Tock (where 1 in 5 Americans get their news), CNN, HBO (John Oliver),  and Comedy Central (John Stewart) as well as AI company Oracle.  An Anti-Trust suit is in order, and the States Attorney Generals can get one going. More at 5calls.org on this. At the same time request that he sue to find out what DOGE did to our Social Security data – a whistleblower is alleging that it has been transferred to a non-governmental actor.

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to support a formal conflict-of-interest review before the Paramount deal closes (around March 20th). The government must require strong data firewalls and full transparency around Oracle’s (AI firm owned by the Ellison Family) role. 

        Contact Senator King and thank him for standing firm on opposing funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Ask Collins to do the same!  Just because Kristie Noem is gone, doesn’t mean anything else will change unless change is forced. As recently as the end of January he has suggested separating funding for ICE + CBP from the other affected agencies such as FEMA, the Coast Guard, and the TSA. Ask him to add to the list of demands for ICE reform that the Feds cooperate with Minnesota law enforcement in the investigation into the deaths of Alex Preti and Renee Good. Let the Republicans take the heat for TSA workers not getting paid, and FEMA being unfunded.

    Maine Related Actions    Support LD 

    1666, “An Act to Include in the Ranked-choice Election Method for General and Special Elections the Offices of Governor, State Senator and State Representative and to Make Other Related Changes” which will allow us to use Ranked Choice Voting in our Gubernatorial Race, local Senate and House races coming up this Fall. The bill passed the House in February, and now is in the Maine Senate.  Please call your local Maine Senator and ask them to support this bill. It will be crucial for our Governor’s race this fall.     Ask your local representative and Senator to supportLD 2176

    “An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” LD 2176 aims to establish a legal framework for individuals who have been unlawfully detained during immigration enforcement actions. It seeks to ensure that these individuals can seek judicial review and recover damages under the Maine Civil Rights Act.  it, and send in testimony to support it – see Contact section below to do this.    From the Maine Peoples Alliance: The MPA will be hosting a lobby day at the legislature this Thursday March 26th 8 – 12:30.  Please contact Mana Abdi if you are coming! There are several bills in the Maine Legislature that would raise the taxes on the super-rich and profitable corporations to help pay for the cuts in Federal spending for basic needs in Maine, 

    These bills includeLD 1089LD 229and 

    LD 1879to raise taxes on individuals with incomes over $1 million, modernize our tax brackets so people who make $60,000 aren’t paying at the same tax rate as people who make $600,000, and make sure that our state collects taxes from massive corporate profits. Go

(MPA has the text for the letter, and you can personalize it.)Contact your state representative and senator to support the bills to restore Wabanaki Sovereignty:   These two bills were heard in front of the Judiciary Committee, and there has not been a report out of the Committee so far. Ask your reps to vote in favor of these bills when they come to the floor of the House and Senate. 

    LD 395, “An Act to Restore Access to Federal Laws Beneficial to the Wabanaki Nations”, would amend the law to allow the Wabanaki tribes (and the Mi’kmaq Nation) to benefit from existing and future federal laws that already apply to the 570-plus other federally recognized tribes. Get a copy of the bill here. It has been voted Ought to Pass as Amended by the Judiciary Committee.

    LD 785, “An Act to Enact the Remaining Recommendations of the Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act”, which would restore the Wabanaki Nations’ inherent right to self-govern under the same federal laws that apply to tribes elsewhere in the United States. Get a copy of the bill here. This had a divided report from the committee.

    Together, these two acts would put the Wabanaki Nations on equal footing with most, if not all, of the other Native American tribes in our country. Go here for a toolkit from the Wabanaki Alliance on taking action on these bills. 

    From the Maine League of Women Voters: Sign up to support fair elections with the Maine League of Women Voters here.Also, here is your annual reminder to check for Clean Elections on your tax return. Learn more here.  On the Maine Income Tax Form, Line 1, check a box to designate $3 to the Maine Clean Election Fund. Checking yes on the form does not impact your tax bill or refund in any way. Child care is a huge issue for working parents in Maine.  Contact your local Representative and Senator and ask them to support: LD 1955 will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program.

    LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff.

    LD 1414 will increase infant and toddler payment rates through the Child Care Affordability Program for eligible families.  To use the MPA’s Action Network to write a letter to your Rep and Senator on these supports for childcare in Maine go here.     Epstein Files Related Actions

    To support Sexual Abuse Survivors:

    Ask your Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor and support “Virginia’s Law”, a billthat would  remove the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits related to sexual abuse and trafficking. This law, named after Virginia Guiffre an Epstein abuse survivor and outspoken advocate for justice,  would empower survivors by giving them a legal means to seek justice with not expiration date. More details on this law here

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to cosponsor S. 2746, the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act and to support the bill with members of the Senate Finance committee where the bill resides currently. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee (that oversees US banking) has been demanding access to Epstein’s finances. To this end, he introduced S. 2746  which would require the Secretary of the Treasury to produce suspicious activity reports relating to Jeffrey Epstein and his associates. More on this at Democracy Now   For a script and more information go to 5calls.orgSo far not a single perpetrator named in these files has been prosecuted. 

    ICE related Actions    Call or write Senator King and Collins and ask them to vote against funding ICE and CBP in the appropriations bill that is currently waiting for approval – 60 votes needed. More details on this at 5calls.org. Ask Collins not to support removing the Filibuster on this vote.    There is a move afoot to tax corporations who wish to build ICE prison camps in Maine at a higher level than regular corporate tax to offset the demands on local resources. Along with simply disallowing these camps through local zoning action and public outcry, cutting into the profit margin of these businesses is another way to dissuade them from trying to settle in Maine. ICE has 45 billion dollars to build/rent/purchase prison camp facilities – see a full report on this

    Contact our Congressional Representatives to: Claw back the 175 BILLION dollar slush fund that was approved in the “OBBA”(The Budget Bill Passed this Summer), for Immigration enforcement actions over the next four years. Collins + King both voted in favor of the Sanders Amendment which clawed back 75 Billion from ICE and CBP. Thank them for this, and then ask them to clawback this funding, and defund ICE and CBP until they meet standards of conduct for police professionals.     Keep glyphosate out of our food supply: 

     Contact Representative Jared Golden and urge him to cosponsor HR 7601 to protect us from glyphosate poisoning by corporations who have no interest in our health or well-being. On February 20th, Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY-4) introduced HR 7601, the “No Immunity for Glyphosate Act.” Co-sponsors so far are Chellie Pingree (D-ME-1), Lauren Boebert (R-CO-4), Nancy Mace (R-SC-1), and Ro Khanna (D-CA-17). This legislation would prohibit federal funds from implementing the Executive Order Trump issued recently expanding the production of Glyphosphate and Phosphorous under the Defense Production act.

    ACA Related Actions

    Call/write Senators King and Collins to support extending the ACA tax credits as the House did on January 8th.  The House’s version is a “clean” extension with no amendments.  The Maine People’s Alliance makes this really easy, go here.     More Actions Today if You Have the Bandwidth    Contact King, Collins, Pingree or Golden to demand the following in relation to the Epstein Files: Demand the DOJ release all documents legally mandated by the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Ask them to demand as well that the DEA(Drug Enforcement Administration) release an UNREDACTED version of their 2015 “Project Chain Reaction” investigation into Epstein and 14 co-conspirators into a massive drug trafficking ring they were involved with.     “An Act Regarding Energy, Utilities and Technology.” Purpose of the Bill: LD 307 aims to establish a moratorium on new data centers with electrical loads of at least 20 megawatts. A “Data Center Coordination Council” would be created to monitor this issue. Data Centers can create serious issues around water quality, energy consumption, infrastructure strain, property values of adjacent properties, etc. Organizations that oppose their development include: Maine Audubon, Natural Resource Council of Maine, Protect Maine Beaches, some labor unions and public health organizations as well.

        The SAVE act is likely to come up in the Senate this week.C

    ontact Senator King  to continue voting NO on the SAVE act HR 7296 (narrowly passed the house) – , and let Susan Collins know that we oppose her support for this act and demand that she not vote to end the Filibuster which some Republican Senators are now considering. The new SAVE Act adds new requirements that voters present a proof of citizenship both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot – 5calls.org has more on this.   While you are at it, let them know  to vote No on the MEGA Act, HR 7300 both of which are voter suppression efforts. .  “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) would ban mail in ballots, limit absentee voting Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact.  Trump is threatening not to sign any bills until this act is passed and is demanding that Senators end the Filibuster for this vote!    If you haven’t yet, please email Aaron Frey Maine’s Attorney General and ask him to join Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General in launching an anti trust suit against the companies that will be owned by one man – David Ellison – a huge Trump backer.  His company will own: CBS News, Tick Tock (where 1 in 5 Americans get their news), CNN, HBO (John Oliver),  and Comedy Central (John Stewart) as well as AI company Oracle.  An Anti-Trust suit is in order, and the States Attorney Generals can get one going. More at 5calls.org on this. At the same time request that he sue to find out what DOGE did to our Social Security data – a whistleblower is alleging that it has been transferred to a non-governmental actor.

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to support a formal conflict-of-interest review before the Paramount deal closes (around March 20th). The government must require strong data firewalls and full transparency around Oracle’s (AI firm owned by the Ellison Family) role. 

        Contact Senator King and thank him for standing firm on opposing funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Ask Collins to do the same!  Just because Kristie Noem is gone, doesn’t mean anything else will change unless change is forced. As recently as the end of January he has suggested separating funding for ICE + CBP from the other affected agencies such as FEMA, the Coast Guard, and the TSA. Ask him to add to the list of demands for ICE reform that the Feds cooperate with Minnesota law enforcement in the investigation into the deaths of Alex Preti and Renee Good. Let the Republicans take the heat for TSA workers not getting paid, and FEMA being unfunded.

    Maine Related Actions    Support LD 

    1666, “An Act to Include in the Ranked-choice Election Method for General and Special Elections the Offices of Governor, State Senator and State Representative and to Make Other Related Changes” which will allow us to use Ranked Choice Voting in our Gubernatorial Race, local Senate and House races coming up this Fall. The bill passed the House in February, and now is in the Maine Senate.  Please call your local Maine Senator and ask them to support this bill. It will be crucial for our Governor’s race this fall.     Ask your local representative and Senator to supportLD 2176

    “An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” LD 2176 aims to establish a legal framework for individuals who have been unlawfully detained during immigration enforcement actions. It seeks to ensure that these individuals can seek judicial review and recover damages under the Maine Civil Rights Act.  it, and send in testimony to support it – see Contact section below to do this.    From the Maine Peoples Alliance: The MPA will be hosting a lobby day at the legislature on Thursday March 26th 8 – 12:30.  Please contact Mana Abdi if you are coming! There are several bills in the Maine Legislature that would raise the taxes on the super-rich and profitable corporations to help pay for the cuts in Federal spending for basic needs in Maine, 

    These bills includeLD 1089LD 229and 

    LD 1879to raise taxes on individuals with incomes over $1 million, modernize our tax brackets so people who make $60,000 aren’t paying at the same tax rate as people who make $600,000, and make sure that our state collects taxes from massive corporate profits. Go

    LD 395, “An Act to Restore Access to Federal Laws Beneficial to the Wabanaki Nations”, would amend the law to allow the Wabanaki tribes (and the Mi’kmaq Nation) to benefit from existing and future federal laws that already apply to the 570-plus other federally recognized tribes. Get a copy of the bill here.

    LD 785, “An Act to Enact the Remaining Recommendations of the Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act”, which would restore the Wabanaki Nations’ inherent right to self-govern under the same federal laws that apply to tribes elsewhere in the United States. Get a copy of the bill here.

    From the Maine League of Women Voters: Sign up to support fair elections with the Maine League of Women Voters here.Also, here is your annual reminder to check for Clean Elections on your tax return. Learn more here.  On the Maine Income Tax Form, Line 1, check a box to designate $3 to the Maine Clean Election Fund. Checking yes on the form does not impact your tax bill or refund in any way. Child care is a huge issue for working parents in Maine.  Contact your local Representative and Senator and ask them to support: LD 1955 will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program.

    LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff.

    LD 1414 will increase infant and toddler payment rates through the Child Care Affordability Program for eligible families.  To use the MPA’s Action Network to write a letter to your Rep and Senator on these supports for childcare in Maine go here.     Epstein Files Related Actions

    To support Sexual Abuse Survivors:

    Ask your Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor and support “Virginia’s Law”, a billthat would  remove the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits related to sexual abuse and trafficking. This law, named after Virginia Guiffre an Epstein abuse survivor and outspoken advocate for justice,  would empower survivors by giving them a legal means to seek justice with not expiration date. More details on this law here

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to cosponsor S. 2746, the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act and to support the bill with members of the Senate Finance committee where the bill resides currently. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee (that oversees US banking) has been demanding access to Epstein’s finances. To this end, he introduced S. 2746  which would require the Secretary of the Treasury to produce suspicious activity reports relating to Jeffrey Epstein and his associates. More on this at Democracy Now   For a script and more information go to 5calls.orgSo far not a single perpetrator named in these files has been prosecuted. 

    ICE related Actions    Call or write Senator King and Collins and ask them to vote against funding ICE and CBP in the appropriations bill that is currently waiting for approval – 60 votes needed. More details on this at 5calls.org. Ask Collins not to support removing the Filibuster on this vote.    There is a move afoot to tax corporations who wish to build ICE prison camps in Maine at a higher level than regular corporate tax to offset the demands on local resources. Along with simply disallowing these camps through local zoning action and public outcry, cutting into the profit margin of these businesses is another way to dissuade them from trying to settle in Maine. ICE has 45 billion dollars to build/rent/purchase prison camp facilities – see a full report on this

    Contact our Congressional Representatives to: Claw back the 175 BILLION dollar slush fund that was approved in the “OBBA”(The Budget Bill Passed this Summer), for Immigration enforcement actions over the next four years. Collins + King both voted in favor of the Sanders Amendment which clawed back 75 Billion from ICE and CBP. Thank them for this, and then ask them to clawback this funding, and defund ICE and CBP until they meet standards of conduct for police professionals.     Keep glyphosate out of our food supply: 

     Contact Representative Jared Golden and urge him to cosponsor HR 7601 to protect us from glyphosate poisoning by corporations who have no interest in our health or well-being. On February 20th, Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY-4) introduced HR 7601, the “No Immunity for Glyphosate Act.” Co-sponsors so far are Chellie Pingree (D-ME-1), Lauren Boebert (R-CO-4), Nancy Mace (R-SC-1), and Ro Khanna (D-CA-17). This legislation would prohibit federal funds from implementing the Executive Order Trump issued recently expanding the production of Glyphosphate and Phosphorous under the Defense Production act.

    ontact Senator King  to continue voting NO on the SAVE act HR 7296 (narrowly passed the house) – , and let Susan Collins know that we oppose her support for this act and demand that she not vote to end the Filibuster which some Republican Senators are now considering. The new SAVE Act adds new requirements that voters present a proof of citizenship both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot – 5calls.org has more on this.   While you are at it, let them know  to vote No on the MEGA Act, HR 7300 both of which are voter suppression efforts. .  “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) would ban mail in ballots, limit absentee voting Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact.  Trump is threatening not to sign any bills until this act is passed and is demanding that Senators end the Filibuster for this vote!    If you haven’t yet, please email Aaron Frey Maine’s Attorney General and ask him to join Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General in launching an anti trust suit against the companies that will be owned by one man – David Ellison – a huge Trump backer.  His company will own: CBS News, Tick Tock (where 1 in 5 Americans get their news), CNN, HBO (John Oliver),  and Comedy Central (John Stewart) as well as AI company Oracle.  An Anti-Trust suit is in order, and the States Attorney Generals can get one going.     Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to support a formal conflict-of-interest review before the Paramount deal closes (around March 20th). The government must require strong data firewalls and full transparency around Oracle’s (AI firm owned by the Ellison Family) role. 

        Contact Senator King and thank him for standing firm on opposing funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Ask Collins to do the same!  Just because Kristie Noem is gone, doesn’t mean anything else will change unless change is forced. As recently as the end of January he has suggested separating funding for ICE + CBP from the other affected agencies such as FEMA, the Coast Guard, and the TSA. Ask him to add to the list of demands for ICE reform that the Feds cooperate with Minnesota law enforcement in the investigation into the deaths of Alex Preti and Renee Good.

    Maine Related Actions    Support LD 

    1666, “An Act to Include in the Ranked-choice Election Method for General and Special Elections the Offices of Governor, State Senator and State Representative and to Make Other Related Changes” which will allow us to use Ranked Choice Voting in our Gubernatorial Race, local Senate and House races coming up this Fall. The bill passed the House in February, and now is in the Maine Senate.  Please call your local Maine Senator and ask them to support this bill. It will be crucial for our Governor’s race this fall.     Ask your local representative and Senator to supportLD 2176

    “An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” LD 2176 aims to establish a legal framework for individuals who have been unlawfully detained during immigration enforcement actions. It seeks to ensure that these individuals can seek judicial review and recover damages under the Maine Civil Rights Act.  it, and send in testimony to support it – see Contact section below to do this.    From the Maine Peoples Alliance: The MPA will be hosting a lobby day at the legislature on March 26th 8 – 12:30.  Please contact Mana Abdi if you are coming! There are several bills in the Maine Legislature that would raise the taxes on the super-rich and profitable corporations to help pay for the cuts in Federal spending for basic needs in Maine, 

    These bills includeLD 1089LD 229and 

    LD 1879to raise taxes on individuals with incomes over $1 million, modernize our tax brackets so people who make $60,000 aren’t paying at the same tax rate as people who make $600,000, and make sure that our state collects taxes from massive corporate profits. Go

(MPA has the text for the letter, and you can personalize it.)Contact your state representative and senator to support the bills to restore Wabanaki Sovereignty:   These two bills were heard in front of the Judiciary Committee, and there has not been a report out of the Committee so far. Ask your reps to contact their friends on the Judiciary Committee to support these two bills.

    LD 395, “An Act to Restore Access to Federal Laws Beneficial to the Wabanaki Nations”, would amend the law to allow the Wabanaki tribes (and the Mi’kmaq Nation) to benefit from existing and future federal laws that already apply to the 570-plus other federally recognized tribes. Get a copy of the bill here.

    LD 785, “An Act to Enact the Remaining Recommendations of the Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act”, which would restore the Wabanaki Nations’ inherent right to self-govern under the same federal laws that apply to tribes elsewhere in the United States. Get a copy of the bill here.

    Together, these two acts would put the Wabanaki Nations on equal footing with most, if not all, of the other Native American tribes in our country. Go here for a toolkit from the Wabanaki Alliance on taking action on these bills. 

    From the Maine League of Women Voters: Sign up to support fair elections with the Maine League of Women Voters here.Also, here is your annual reminder to check for Clean Elections on your tax return. Learn more here.  On the Maine Income Tax Form, Line 1, check a box to designate $3 to the Maine Clean Election Fund. Checking yes on the form does not impact your tax bill or refund in any way. Child care is a huge issue for working parents in Maine.  Contact your local Representative and Senator and ask them to support: LD 1955 will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program.

    LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff.

    LD 1414 will increase infant and toddler payment rates through the Child Care Affordability Program for eligible families.  To use the MPA’s Action Network to write a letter to your Rep and Senator on these supports for childcare in Maine go here.     To support Sexual Abuse Survivors:

    Ask your Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor and support “Virginia’s Law”, a billthat would  remove the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits related to sexual abuse and trafficking. This law, named after Virginia Guiffre an Epstein abuse survivor and outspoken advocate for justice,  would empower survivors by giving them a legal means to seek justice with not expiration date. More details on this law here

    Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to cosponsor S. 2746, the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act and to support the bill with members of the Senate Finance committee where the bill resides currently. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee (that oversees US banking) has been demanding access to Epstein’s finances. To this end, he introduced S. 2746  which would require the Secretary of the Treasury to produce suspicious activity reports relating to Jeffrey Epstein and his associates. More on this at Democracy Now   For a script and more information go to 5calls.orgSo far not a single perpetrator named in these files has been prosecuted. 

    ICE related Actions    Call or write Senator King and Collins and ask them to vote against funding ICE and CBP in the appropriations bill that is currently waiting for approval – 60 votes needed. More details on this at 5calls.org. Ask Collins not to support removing the Filibuster on this vote.    There is a move afoot to tax corporations who wish to build ICE prison camps in Maine at a higher level than regular corporate tax to offset the demands on local resources. Along with simply disallowing these camps through local zoning action and public outcry, cutting into the profit margin of these businesses is another way to dissuade them from trying to settle in Maine. ICE has 45 billion dollars to build/rent/purchase prison camp facilities – see a full report on this

    Contact our Congressional Representatives to: Claw back the 175 BILLION dollar slush fund that was approved in the “OBBA”(The Budget Bill Passed this Summer), for Immigration enforcement actions over the next four years. Collins + King both voted in favor of the Sanders Amendment which clawed back 75 Billion from ICE and CBP. Thank them for this, and then ask them to clawback this funding, and defund ICE and CBP until they meet standards of conduct for police professionals.     The Maine Immigrant’s  Rights Coalition has set up a resource hub on responding to ICE.  If you see what you identify as an ICE vehicle in your town call the ICE Watch hotline in Maine:207 544 9989. You can also text them a photo of what you believe to be an ICE vehicle, or any ICE actions in your area.

    Keep glyphosate out of our food supply: 

     Contact Representative Jared Golden and urge him to cosponsor HR 7601 to protect us from glyphosate poisoning by corporations who have no interest in our health or well-being. On February 20th, Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY-4) introduced HR 7601, the “No Immunity for Glyphosate Act.” Co-sponsors so far are Chellie Pingree (D-ME-1), Lauren Boebert (R-CO-4), Nancy Mace (R-SC-1), and Ro Khanna (D-CA-17). This legislation would prohibit federal funds from implementing the Executive Order Trump issued recently expanding the production of Glyphosphate and Phosphorous under the Defense Production act.

    ACA Related Actions
