Category: Call To Action

  • Action 221: March 28 No Kings

Background:  If you do absolutely nothing else this month to save democracy, at least show up at the No Kings rally nearest you.  Ezra Levin of Indivisible has made the case persuasively that this is super important (1).

Action: To find your nearest rally, go to https://www.nokings.org, expand the map (+ sign in lower right), and RSVP to your nearest rally.  As of this writing, Hancock County shows events in Castine, Deer Isle, Ellsworth, Penobscot, and Southwest Harbor.  (Cherryfield, Belfast or Bangor may be closer for some of us.)

For ongoing inspiration on signage, check out Robert Hubbell’s substack and scroll to the photos at the end of each post.  https://roberthubbell.substack.com.  There have been many photos from Maine over the last year, but also from all over the nation!  It’s very inspiring. Dictators and cult leaders always try to make you feel isolated.  They are failing.  If we persist – if we unite – democracy WILL overcome the forces of fascistic plutocracy.

  • Action 220: Postcarding 101

Background:  Sending personal, handwritten postcards has been proven effective in getting people to decide to vote. (1) Plus, postcarding is FUN, whether you do it solo or at a postcard party!  If you sign up with one of the campaigns listed under RESOURCES, below, you will be provided with a script that has been “vetted” as effective, as well as a list of names and addresses which are unique to you, assuring that the pool of recipients is as broad as possible.  True, the price of postcard stamps has risen dramatically over the last few years, but a sheet of 20 stamps costs only $12.20 – a very affordable way to boost turnout.  You can use a quarter sheet of cardstock to make a postcard of your own design (see the image below of the cards Brooksville sent out in 2024.)  Or you can buy a package of 10 pre-stamped cards for $6.90 from the post office (see RESOURCES).

    Action:   So, the steps are:

    1. Select a campaign from the RESOURCES section below.  (All other things being equal, consider selecting Field Team 6, because of the Maine focus).  Enroll in the campaign.  Read their literature about the importance of sending a proven script that doesn’t threaten the voter!

    2. Decide if you want to go solo, or create a local group to enjoy postcarding with you. If you are creating a group, mutually decide on your date, time and location, allowing lead time to assemble all your materials: (cards, pens, stamps, script(s).  If you have the bandwidth, provide cookies!

That’s it.  Easy-peasy, fun, and effective!

  • Action 219: Maine Legislation 3/9-3/13

Things are really coming to an end in this legislative session.  Very few public hearings, but a lot of work sessions leading to final votes.  Some of the bills with hearings are quite technical and specialized.  On Monday, for example, a bill to tinker yet again with the school funding formula, and on Tuesday a bill to require financial guarantees by certain solid waste processing facilities.

On Wednesday, LD 2176, a very important bill titled “An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” will have another hearing.  The previous public hearing was held on 10 Feb, and you can read the 22 testimony items.  They are worth your time to read, because they may help restore your faith in humanity.  The bill has many sponsors, all Democrats.  The members of the other party seem to have lost their humanity, or at least they have lost the courage to speak out when obvious wrongs are being committed.

At the same time there will be a hearing on a confusing bill (a former “concept draft”), to require the Maine Dept. of Economic and Community Development to “study” existing financial incentives that benefit data centers. Why doesn’t the bill just stop with its other provision, which is to remove data centers from eligibility for the business equipment tax exemption and the business incentives program?  We certainly don’t need or want to open the door to any financial incentives for the billionaires’ data centers!  Maybe the intent of the study is to find other existing incentives with a goal of moving more of them out of reach of data centers.  That would be a good thing.

On March 12 we are presented with a totally obscure “concept draft” with no detail whatsoever, titled “An Act to Strengthen the Health Care System in Maine”.  A complete mystery about a vitally important subject.

I will probably be wrapping up these legislative sendouts as the legislature winds down.  Also there probably won’t be new Action Items from me until April.  (Going on a mud season vacation!) But I urge you to sign up to receive either Emanuel Pariser’s email (emanuel.pariser@gmail.com) or the one compiled by Shelly (Baypottery@pm.me), or both.  They are excellent resources and will keep you very, very busy, productively saving our nation.  And don’t forget to participate in one of the No Kings protest rallies on March 28!  They will be happening everywhere, and they are important

    • Check complete bill listing here: https://legislature.maine.gov/Calendar/#PHWS.  Set the date range in the upper left corner.  This listing also shows work sessions if you want to weigh in on any of those. As always, you can delve into the testimony that was delivered at any public hearing on a bill that interests you.

  • Action 218: Ministry of Truth?

Background.  In George Orwell’s dystopian and increasingly relevant novel 1984, the Ministry of Truth was the omnipresent propaganda outlet. (Can you believe that Donald Trump named his social media empire “Truth Social”?  Was that ironic, or idiotic?)  Anyway, Orwell described the Ministry of Truth as involved with news media, entertainment, the fine arts, and educational resources. It manufactured “facts” for propaganda effect, to maintain the illusion that the Party is absolutely infallible, and should be trusted without question.

Today, in the non-fiction reality, a corporate merger is pending that would create “the largest pro-Trump media monopoly in America. Two of the nation’s biggest news organizations — CBS News and CNN — along with CBS entertainment (home to Stephen Colbert) and Comedy Central (home to Jon Stewart) and HBO (John Oliver) and TikTok (where 1 out of 5 Americans now get their news) — are all about to become one giant mega-media monopoly under the control of Trump allies and suck-ups: multibillionaire Larry Ellison and Ellison’s son, David.” (1)

Don’t look for relief to the agencies that are supposed to prevent dangerous monopolies on news and entertainment (“infotainment”).  Pam Bondi’s “Justice” Department and the anemic Federal Trade Commission (2) won’t lift a finger. If there is a light in this dark picture, it is that YOU can do something about it.  How?

Action:  Write to Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey.  Ask him to join the investigation being initiated by California AG Rob Bonta to prevent a Trump-dominated media monopoly in possible violation of the Clayton Act (3) as well as the intent of the Constitution’s First Amendment (4).  While you are at it, send a copy of your letter to Senator King.  (The other one is useless.)

    (2) The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reviews mergers of news organizations to prevent anticompetitive, monopolistic consolidation under the Clayton Act. Along with the DOJ, the FTC investigates whether media mergers will limit consumer choice, inflate advertising prices, or reduce content diversity. The agency can approve deals, negotiate settlements, or sue to block transactions. There are supposed to be 5 commissioners with no more than 3 of one political party. Currently there are just two commissioners, both Republican. https://www.ftc.gov/about-ftc/commissioners-staff .  Also see https://www.axios.com/2025/11/17/ftc-two-commissioners

  • Action 217: MAINE rules 4 ME!

Background:  The Maine Democratic Party has a very important rule in its charter.  Here it is:

    Maine Democratic Party “Neutrality Policy”

    Charter Section 130, states:

“The Maine Democratic Party, and all state and local Party organizations, shall not endorse any person in a Democratic Party primary, unless they are the only candidate who has qualified for the Democratic Party primary election ballot as verified and certified by the Secretary of State’s office after the statutory filing deadline… This subsection does not prohibit a Party organization from making general support services available to primary candidates as long as those services are offered equally to all candidates.”

Various branches of the national Democratic party clearly do not hold themselves to this standard.  Sometimes they openly endorse: at other times they pour money into campaigns they favor, clearly violating the second portion of the “Neutrality Policy”.  The Maine party expects all Maine state and local party organizations to comply with Maine policy.  Most of us believe that, in fairness to all, we should!

But so should the national party, when it comes to its dealings in Maine.

Action:  If you are a registered Democrat, express your approval of the Maine neutrality policy.  Let the national party know that we expect any organization worthy of the name Democratic to adhere to the state rule when dealing with political candidates in the State of Maine.  Respect our desire to have a level playing field in our primaries so that the best candidate, according to local judgment, can win.  The national party “putting its fist on the scale” for a designated favorite suppresses the participation of Democrats and of potential Democratic voters – who identify such heavy-handed election manipulation with the Republican party.

  • Action 216: the Hancock County Caucus

Remarks of Lee Cline, Hancock County Democratic Committee Vice-Chair
Delivered 10 AM Saturday February 28 at the Hancock County Caucus

WHAT WE DO HERE MATTERS TODAY

This past week, the president of the US gave his State of the Union speech.

He said a lot of things.

Almost 2 hours full of lies and gaslighting.

He spewed violent rhetoric, stoking racism and hatred.

    He mocked the American people.

He said “Democrats have destroyed this country”

He called the entire party “crazy”

When the TRUTH of the State of Union is this: America is weaker, poorer, sicker, less safe, more divided than ever before. We know this to be true right here in Hancock County. We feel it in our bones. The state of the union is a nation in crisis. We cannot pretend any of this is normal.

    FRUSTRATION WITH PARTY

Some of you may have heard me last month talking about this. But I’ll say it again. I know a lot of us are frustrated with the Democratic Party right now. Some are very frustrated. But: we here in this room are NOT Washington, and we’re not even Augusta. We are neighbors, we are our own community, and there is power here. We can build something new from the ground up. Now is not the time to leave it to someone else to do. It’s up to us! Because the alternative…isn’t much of an alternative.

    NEW BEGINNINGS

Here we are last day of February. It’s been a long winter, but change is in the air.

We’re eagerly looking for new beginnings for the country…new beginnings for the Party…and for leadership. We want leaders with the courage and integrity to stand up for our values and what is right:

    • We believe health care is a right, not a privilege
    • We deserve affordable housing, child care, elder care, groceries, prescriptions.
    • We deserve a living wage.
    • We deserve affordable, sustainable energy.
    • We fight for justice, fair elections, due process, and a rule of law that applies to everyone
    • We need leaders who tell the truth and stand up for us, not billionaire donors and mega corporations
    • We crave principled leaders who walk the walk.

There is too much to lose. We need to be ruthless about winning.

WHAT DOES RESISTANCE LOOK LIKE IN 2026?

Running for office–OR writing a letter to the editor. Or talking your neighbor into writing one, too.

It may mean standing up in front of a rally and giving a rousing speech.

But it may also mean taking photos at that rally and posting those photos on social media.

It may look like getting out and knocking on doors and making phone calls, talking to your neighbors about candidates and issues.

Or it may mean sitting at your kitchen table putting names into a spreadsheet.

It may mean writing a newsletter for your town Democrats. Every month.

It means amplifying our voices. Amplifying one another’s voices.

Helping each other with the tools we need to be loud, and organized, and effective.

That’s leadership, that’s organizing, and that is how we grow power from the ground up.

WHAT WE WANT FROM YOU: HOW TO GET INVOLVED.

    The Convention in May:
We urge to you volunteer to be a Delegate.  We want to send you off to represent US at the Maine State Convention in Portland on May 1 and 2, at Thompson Point. There, you will vote on the platform, certify a new Charter as well as new Democratic State Committee members, hear speakers, chat up candidates, attend leadership workshops and networking events and banquets and lunches and all kinds of fun like that.

There will be a cost to attend. Early bird pricing may help. We have been assured that it will be possible to request a waiver of fees “no questions asked” and the party is going to be arranging for a less expensive block of rooms in case people are concerned about the cost of overnight lodging in Portland. The most important day to attend will be Saturday, so if you can’t make Friday, you can still participate in the most important functions. Also, just a reminder: there are many fun things to do for families in Portland. One of the best, and right at Thompson’s Point, is the Children’s Museum.

The Maine Democratic Party has allocated delegates for each county across the state. Hancock County gets 69 delegates and 14 alternates. We have those delegate numbers broken down into 7 town groups, further broken down by town.   In a moment we’ll ask you to find your town’s breakout session where you’ll hash out who you’d like to send to represent you. After about 45 minutes, we’ll reconvene here and formally vote on each group’s delegate slate.

Several other ways we’d like you to get involved:

    • Volunteer to help organize your own town (show of hands: Who’s been to a meeting of your town’s Democratic Committee? Who doesn’t know whether their town Democrats even have regular meetings?) Some towns have active committees that meet monthly with lively and engaged groups. Others don’t have committees or don’t meet at all. Those towns especially can really use your help.
    • Help secure the elections in your own town! We’re looking for folks willing to be either election clerks OR poll watchers. Election clerks get paid a small amount for their help on Election Day. Poll watching is a more informal but very important job and the Maine Democratic Party has in the past offered guidance in how to do this.
    • Stay connected with HCDC via subscription to our newsletter.
    • Finally, CONSIDER RUNNING FOR OFFICE.  We still need candidates to run for the following House Districts: If you reside in one of these districts, please consider running. We need a Democrat running in every race.

HD 13: Ellsworth, Waltham, Fletcher’s Landing
HD 17: Bucksport, Orland, Penobscot, Verona
    HD 18: Dedham, Otis, Mariaville

The deadline to declare is March 16.  You will need to get signatures by then. We have those forms in the office. We have Sean Smith here today, who is Campaign Director with the Maine House Democratic Campaign Committee. Please reach out to him today with your questions. And contact Phil Bailey for additional information and help.  He reminds everyone that if a legislative candidate has 4 or 5 volunteers who will canvass an afternoon a week they have a good chance of winning.

We will now hear from MARINNA SMITH–who finally decided to run for Ellsworth City Council last summer–who will share her thoughts about running for office.  After that we will break up into our 7 town groups to select Hancock County’s delegates.

(The Caucus subsequently elected 69 Delegates and 12 Alternates to the Convention, and adjourned at 12:30)

  • Action 215: “Wagging the Dog” – AGAIN!

    Background:
For information about the 1997 movie, see (1). In a nutshell, the plot involved distracting the public from a
Presidential sex scandal (involving an underage girl) by creating a war (2). Some have changed the name of the
new “Operation Epic Fury” against Iran into “Operation Epstein Fury” (3). Congress must not allow the Epstein
files to be swept away in the fog of war!

But distracting from the Epstein files may be only part of the reason the Trump administration is attacking Iran.
In addition to his longstanding record of pleasing Israel (4), Trump may consider the war as a foot in the door to
control the midterm election. Marc Elias of Democracy Docket makes this argument persuasively today.

Apparently, two hours after announcing the bombing in the wee hours of Saturday morning, Trump wrote “Iran
tried to interfere in the 2020 and 2024 elections to stop Trump and now faces renewed war with the United
States.” Trump is constantly looking for something to blame for his loss: currently it’s Iran. Look for Trump to
attempt to ban mail-in voting and the use of certain voting machines, claiming that they are “vectors of foreign
    interference” (5).

Regarding the notion that ordinary Iranians will use the opportunity of US aggression to rise up and shake off
their brutal leaders, Malcolm Nance has a long interview throwing cold water on the notion, due in part to Iran’s
“depth on the bench” of military leaders, and the Iranian government’s ability to deploy many thousands of
regime-loyal militia dedicated to controlling domestic disturbances (6).

Senator Schumer – one of many Senate Democrats whose campaigns have received huge contributions from
AIPAC (7) – said:” The Senate should quickly return to session and reassert its constitutional duty by
passing our resolution to enforce the War Powers Act.” This causes the obvious question, “What’s in
the War Powers Act?” The best description is probably the one from the Congressional Research Service (8).

Reading through that description, one is struck by the procedural maneuvering and delay that is possible per the
statute. Key points: “Failure by the President to properly consult with Congress prior to committing U.S. forces
into hostilities does not directly trigger any adverse statutory action. In contrast, the WPR’s more clearly
defined reporting requirements … start the clock on an automatic termination of the use of force and makes
available procedures that allow for expedited congressional consideration of legislation that would authorize its
continued use.” No wonder Congress keeps falling in line behind presidential overreach! Its feet are tangled in
red tape of its own making, and the majority of its members are too cowardly or compromised to assert their
    prerogatives under the Constitution!

Action: Contact our delegation. All four of them.

    (1) No more delays. Release ALL the Epstein files NOW! Contempt proceedings for failure to do so.
    (2) Shut down the war machine NOW! Invoke the sections of the War Powers Act that allow it!
    (3) Protect our elections! Pre-emptively declare as illegal any attempt at Executive Branch takeover of, or
interference with, the rights of the States to conduct our free and fair elections.

  • Action 214: Maine Legislation Feb 24-27

A message from the Hancock Country Democrats (2/24):

All things considered, this will be a quiet week in the legislature – at least as far as hearings are concerned.  Lots of work sessions, however.  Remember, you can still influence legislation you care about, by contacting your legislator(s) – House and Senate – even if public hearings are over.  In those cases, it’s useful to read, for background, the comments made at the public hearings.  The comments are all linked to the page about the bill’s status.  Follow the first bullet below to access this week’s calendar, then scroll for the title or number of any bill you are following, click on the live link to the bill’s number, then read the public hearing testimony, usually in the lower left quadrant of the page you land on.

This week’s hearings include, on Tuesday, two bills concerning school employees’ credentials and background checks, designed to protect students (LD 2175 and LD 2192): and two bills to improve dental services (LD 2206 and LD 2209).

On Wednesday, there is another “concept draft” that finally got flesh applied to the bones. LD 474, originally with the anodyne title “An Act to Improve Maine’s Environment and Protect Natural Resources” is now titled “An Act to Establish a Stewardship Program for Primary and Rechargeable Batteries” and requires producers of such batteries to establish a “battery stewardship” program.  The bill is long and detailed.

Also on Wednesday: LD 335, “A Bill to Safeguard Reproductive Rights” was also originally a concept draft, but it was reworked to be “An Act to Protect Funding for Family Planning Services” and would require replacement of funding that the Trump Administration took away from Title X grantees.  As you might expect, the legislative history on this one is convoluted, with two work sessions (last May, this January) attempts to table it indefinitely (failed 13 to 18 in the Senate by a roll call vote), and finally a public hearing this coming Wednesday at 1 PM that should prove important.  Maine Women’s Lobby has information about testifying.

    https://www.mainewomen.org/take-action

LD 2174, up for hearing at the same time as LD335, would streamline permitting for renewable energy projects.   Good idea.   And yet another “concept draft”, LD 276 “An Act regarding Inland Fisheries and Wildlife” turns out to be “An Act to Modernize ATV Classification, Registration, Trail Access and Landowner Protections”.  Who knew?

An important Democratically sponsored bill, LD 2208, “An Act to Offset Federal Cuts to Health Insurance for Certain Maine Families and Seniors” has a hearing on Thursday.  It would establish three funds, 1) to stabilize rural hospitals, 2) to stabilize health care premiums, and 3) to provide funds for the Maine Care program if the Trump Administration fails to do so adequately.  There is a hefty price tag associated with this effort for FY 2026-2027, but really, are we – or aren’t we – EVER going to change the direction of the country’s economic resources away from the greed of billionaires and toward the well-being of citizens?  The choice is ours to make, and supporting good legislation is one way to reinforce our choice.

I’m not providing a table this week. I think you know what to do.

See you at the Hancock County Democratic Caucus on Saturday!

  • BCCA Action Items- Tuesday, 2/10/26

Action Items to choose from (or do all of them: your choice!). In no particular order. Scroll down to the matching number of your option:

    1. Oppose the new SAVE Act, H.R. 7296, the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act” or the “SAVE America Act”
    2. Again, keep fighting to rein in and, hopefully, to abolish ICE
    3. The Epstein Files Controversy is Not Over
    4. Read and sign a Resistbot letter to our representatives to stop judge-approved mass incarceration
    5. Ban private private equity ownership of hospitals

    Actions

    1) Oppose the new SAVE Act, H.R. 7296, the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act” or the “SAVE America Act”:

This is a voter suppression bill, pure and simple. It will make voting harder, if not impossible, for millions of eligible voters (including Republicans, especially Republican women) to register to vote and to actually vote, by requiring proof of citizenship not only to register to vote, but also to cast a ballot. It would also prohibit universal voting by mail, block states from counting absentee ballots received after election day, and require frequent voter purges that would kick eligible citizens off the rolls. People without photo ID on which their name matches their birth certificate may be turned away at the polls. Once again, this could disenfranchise millions of voters, including women who took their husbands’ names upon marriage, so their last names don’t match the names on their birth certificates.

I, for example, could be hit by a double whammy: Not only did I keep my maiden name (wow, I hate that term!), but as an adult, I also changed my first name to match what I’d been called most of my life, rather than go on with a passport and driver’s license that had my unused birth name on them. Long story, but the short version is that my legal name change was supposed to make things simpler and clearer, not more difficult. And especially not more difficult to exercise my constitutional right as a U.S. citizen, born and bred, to vote in elections. I do have photo IDs that match each other—passport and driver’s license—so perhaps I won’t be asked for my birth certificate, but can I be sure of that? And what of all the women who legally took their husband’s last names using only their marriage certificate to prove that it was okay? And what about Indigenous Americans who don’t have birth certificates, only tribal IDs that don’t include all the newly required information?

The vote for H.R. 7296, the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act” or the “SAVE America Act,” could happen as soon as this Wednesday, February 11thContact House Representative Jared Golden, who was one of four Democrat Congressmen to vote for the last SAVE Act, and demand that he vote NO on this new SAVE Act, an act that, despite its name, will make it significantly harder, if not outright impossible, for millions of eligible voters to register to vote and to actually vote. It is our right as U.S. citizens to have our voices heard in elections across the nation. Golden had better support our right to vote, rather than cave to pressure from Republicans.

There is also another act in the House coming up for a vote soon: H.R.7300, the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act. Along with imposing a proof-of-citizenship requirement for voter registration and a photo ID requirement to vote, this bill would usurp the constitutionally-granted authority of states to administer elections. Tell House Rep. Jared Golden to vote NO on this MEGA Act.

    2) Again, keep fighting to rein in and, hopefully, to abolish ICE:

Our Senate reps need to stand firm against ICE and BCP: There must be NO further DHS funding at all until the Senate has agreed to ironclad guardrails for ICE. The way this agency has been abusing both American citizens and undocumented people is outrageous. The “worst of the worst” means people who snuck into this country illegally and proceeded to commit serious crimes—serious crimes, not the occasional speeding ticket. And the “worst of the worst” should be located and apprehended using legal, controlled policies, not stopping any nonwhite-skinned person who speaks with an accent or speaks in another language, brutally grabbing them, scanning their faces with inaccurate ID technology (seehttps://www.wired.com/story/cbp-ice-dhs-mobile-fortify-face-recognition-verify-identity/ ), handcuffing them, shoving them into unmarked vans, whisking them asap to cruel and torturous detention centers in other states, deporting them to foreign (to them) countries, breaking up families, detaining little children, etc. This is not the behavior of the Founders’ America, or the behavior of civilized people anywhere.

There is no excuse for ICE to not be required to follow the same legal guidelines as every other law enforcement agency in our country. ICE agents cannot be allowed to hide their identities behind masks and unprofessional, properly identified uniforms. They cannot be allowed to tear apart families, let alone to detain children without their parents and in inhumane conditions. They cannot be allowed to arrest anyone without proper judicial warrants. ICE officials cannot be allowed to make up the rules for themselves as they go along. The cannot be allowed to intimidate, beat, arrest, or otherwise abuse people in this country legally—and that includes people following legal protocols for asylum or citizenship. Detention centers should not be allowed to abuse children—with or without their families present. They should not be allowed to refuse these people medical treatment, contact with lawyers, and all due process requirements in general.

Contact Senators King and Collins and demand that they absolutely refuse to give DHS a penny more or even agree to negotiate this without the above requirements. ICE has to be forced to toe the line or be totally abolished. What’s more, Kristi Noem needs to be impeached and removed, and Stephen Miller needs to be fired. Both need to be prosecuted, but let’s get rid of them first.

    3) The Epstein Files Controversy is Not Over:

Per Democracy Now, “Democratic Congressmember Ro Khanna has called for Congress to investigate associates of Jeffrey Epstein named in the files and for the full release of the remaining documents. This comes as Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the review of Epstein files is over and that no further prosecutions are expected. Blanche, who was formerly President Trump’s personal lawyer, told Fox News that ‘it isn’t a crime to party with Mr. Epstein.’

“Meanwhile, Epstein survivors have criticized the Department of Justice for failing to redact personal information, including some of their identities, as well as email addresses and even nude photos. ‘They were cavalier, at best, when it comes to the survivors, and they took great lengths to protect some of the rich and powerful people who actually committed the crimes and morally heinous acts,’” said Ro Khanna.

Khanna also said, “And I am so offended by Deputy Attorney General Blanche saying, ‘Oh, this is just about men who are playboys who are going to parties.’This is about men who knew that Epstein was abusing and raping young girls, saying, ‘I want to show up to parties where these young girls are being paraded, or where these young girls are being raped.’

“And this is the American elite? I mean, the question we have to ask ourselves as a nation is: How have we produced an elite that is so callow, that is so immature, that is so venal, that has so little scruples, and that has such impunity from the rule of law? What have we done wrong in this country that that is our elite?”

Damn good questions that deserve honest answers. Contact Congressman Jared Golden and urge him to demand that the DOJ release all documents legally mandated by the Epstein Files Transparency Act. He should also call for public hearings and investigations into alleged abuses revealed by the documents, call for the resignations of Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Deputy Todd Blanche, and support articles of impeachment and move to convict Donald Trump (thanks to 5calls.org for the language). Contact Senators King and Collins and urge them  to cosponsor and otherwise speak out in support of Senator Ron Wyden’s bill, S.2746 (the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act), which would require the Secretary of the Treasury to produce suspicious activity reports relating to Jeffrey Epstein and his associates. Republicans are currently blocking this bill. The very idea that anyone with any integrity would block this bill should prompt us to ask WHY? Who are they protecting? All this needs to be revealed, no matter the fallout.

    4) Read and sign a Resistbot letter to our representatives to stop judge-approved mass incarceration:

    5) Ban private equity ownership of hospitals:

  • Action 210 – KILL the SAVE clones!

A message from the Hancock Country Democrats (2/9):

Background:  We warned you this was coming.  See Actions 204 and 208.  Apparently, there could be Congressional votes THIS WEEK to institute voter suppression measures.  The Maine League of Women Voters writes as follows:

“It’s back: SAVE Act 2.0. Last year, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act was met with national outrage, and as a result, only squeaked by in the U.S. House. It’s time to get loud again, because similar bills have been introduced and are described as the SAVE Act on steroids: the Make Elections Great Again Act (MEGA) and the Save America Act. They include voter suppression methods, like voter ID and requiring proof of citizenship in order to vote. But they’re also far, far worse than the original SAVE Act. The MEGA Act would prohibit the use of mail-in voting (like absentee voting), Ranked Choice Voting, and the bill touches on voter list procedures and post-election audits. It’s a package of terrible ideas built upon false, debunked theories that our elections are not secure. Maine has the right to conduct our elections, which are already fair, transparent, and accessible. Let’s reject this federal intervention.”
The League says in addition: “ We encourage you to TAKE ACTION. These laws are nefarious legislation written to restrict states’ ability to run their own elections. Email your U.S. Representative and Senator that you oppose these bills. It only takes a few minutes.”
