Emanuel’s Daily Action Email, Friday, 3/13/26

Good Morning Folks, it’s our second Friday in March, and in Mid Maine at least some of the ground seems workable for early plantings of hardy plants! The birds are starting to make their spring racket. There really are little miracles all around if we ask ourselves to notice them.  This too is an act of resistance.  Have a great weekend.

Top Action to Take TodaySupport LD

1666, “An Act to Include in the Ranked-choice Election Method for General and Special Elections the Offices of Governor, State Senator and State Representative and to Make Other Related Changes” which will allow us to use Ranked Choice Voting in our Gubernatorial Race, local Senate and House races coming up this Fall. The bill passed the House in February, and now is in the Maine Senate.  Please call your local Maine Senator and ask them to support this bill. It will be crucial for our Governor’s race this fall. (Correction on yesterday’s post, the bill has passed out of committee, and passed the House, and needs only one more vote and governor Mills’ signature to become law! – Thank you to Chris for catching my mistake yesterday!)

If you want to help unravel the Epstein files, contact Representative Maxwell Frost here about how to help crowdsource the information from these files so they are usable by congresspeople, lawyers, and survivor groups. Check out his conversation with Heather Cox Richardson here.  Librarians helped us win world war 2, now it’s time they help us bring this regime down!    Contact King, Collins, Pingree or Golden to demand the following in relation to the Epstein Files: Demand the DOJ release all documents legally mandated by the Epstein Files Transparency Act, (and)  call for Trump to be deposed under oath to investigate the sexual misconduct allegations detailed in the files, (and) call for public hearings and investigations into the alleged abuses revealed by the documents, (and) call for the resignations of Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Deputy Todd Blanche.  For more on this please go to 5calls.orgContact King, Collins, Pingree, and Golden to stop the funding for the Iran War. Indivisible has set up a quick email you can send to them here. They advise Congress should: assert immediate oversight, continue forcing votes on War Powers Resolutions, restrict or cut off any supplemental funding for the war, and publicly oppose the war. So far, at least 2,000 people have been killed, including 175 Iranian schoolchildren, and seven American service members. At least 140 U.S. service members have been wounded, several critically. The final tallies on both sides will almost certainly be far higher.

This war is costing a billion dollars a day that is coming from our taxes, our healthcare, + jacking up our food and gas prices. The war mongers need Democratic votes to support any further funding for this travesty of an excursion as Trump called it yesterday. After you email your folks, call them with the same message. Note – Jared Golden is offering a new War Powers Act in the House – the specifics seem pretty good.  Ask Chellie Pingree to support this.    If you haven’t yet, please email Aaron Frey Maine’s Attorney General and ask him to join Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General in launching an anti trust suit against the companies that will be owned by one man – David Ellison – a huge Trump backer.  His company will own: CBS News, Tick Tock (where 1 in 5 Americans get their news), CNN, HBO (John Oliver),  and Comedy Central (John Stewart) as well as AI company Oracle. As Robert Reich points out (I have attached his post) this is a Media Monopoly, the size of which we have never seen before. An Anti-Trust suit is in order, and the States Attorney Generals can stop it. You should email Attorney

Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to support a formal conflict-of-interest review before the Paramount deal closes (around March 20th). The government must require strong data firewalls and full transparency around Oracle’s (AI firm owned by the Ellison Family) role. Serious oversight is needed—before and after the deal is closed. (Oracle’s AI will now have access to federal government data at the highest security levels.  Oracle was given authorization to process government-held data including the medical records of over 150 million Americans. And back in January, the government gave Oracle “security control” over the domestic part of Tik Tok) Thank you to Shelly for this information.

Contact Senator King and thank him for standing firm on opposing funding for the Department of Homeland Security.  Just because Kristie Noem is gone, doesn’t mean anything else will change unless change is forced. As recently as the end of January he has suggested separating funding for ICE + CBP from the other affected agencies such as FEMA, the Coast Guard, and the TSA. Ask him to add to the list of demands for ICE reform that the Feds cooperate with Minnesota law enforcement in the investigation into the deaths of Alex Preti and Renee Good.Contact Senator King  to continue voting NO on the SAVE act HR 7296 (narrowly passed the house) – , and let Susan Collins know that we oppose her support for this act. The new SAVE Act adds new requirements that voters present a proof of citizenship both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot – 5calls.org has more on this.   While you are at it, let them know  to vote No on the MEGA Act, HR 7300 both of which are voter suppression efforts. .  “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) would ban mail in ballots, limit absentee voting Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact.  Trump is threatening not to sign any bills until this act is passed!

“An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” LD 2176 aims to establish a legal framework for individuals who have been unlawfully detained during immigration enforcement actions. It seeks to ensure that these individuals can seek judicial review and recover damages under the Maine Civil Rights Act.  it, and send in testimony to support it – see Contact section below to do this.    From the Maine Peoples Alliance: There are several bills in the Maine Legislature that would raise the taxes on the super-rich and profitable corporations to help pay for the cuts in Federal spending for basic needs in Maine,

    These bills includeLD 1089LD 229and

LD 1879to raise taxes on individuals with incomes over $1 million, modernize our tax brackets so people who make $60,000 aren’t paying at the same tax rate as people who make $600,000, and make sure that our state collects taxes from massive corporate profits. Go

here to write a letter to our legislative leaders. (MPA has the text for the letter, and you can personalize it.)Contact your state representative and senator to support the bills to restore Wabanaki Sovereignty:   These two bills were heard in front of the Judiciary Committee, and there has not been a report out of the Committee so far. Ask your reps to contact their friends on the Judiciary Committee to support these two bills.

LD 395, “An Act to Restore Access to Federal Laws Beneficial to the Wabanaki Nations”, would amend the law to allow the Wabanaki tribes (and the Mi’kmaq Nation) to benefit from existing and future federal laws that already apply to the 570-plus other federally recognized tribes. Get a copy of the bill here.

LD 785, “An Act to Enact the Remaining Recommendations of the Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act”, which would restore the Wabanaki Nations’ inherent right to self-govern under the same federal laws that apply to tribes elsewhere in the United States. Get a copy of the bill here.

Together, these two acts would put the Wabanaki Nations on equal footing with most, if not all, of the other Native American tribes in our country. Go here for a toolkit from the Wabanaki Alliance on taking action on these bills.

From the Maine League of Women Voters: here’s your annual reminder to check for Clean Elections on your tax return. Learn more here.  On the Maine Income Tax Form, Line 1, check a box to designate $3 to the Maine Clean Election Fund. If you’re using tax assistance software to file your taxes, like TurboTax, it may prompt you with the Clean Elections question automatically, making it even easier to check yes! Checking yes on the form does not impact your tax bill or refund in any way. Child care is a huge issue for working parents in Maine.  Contact your local Representative and Senator and ask them to support: LD 1955 will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program.

LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff.

LD 1414 will increase infant and toddler payment rates through the Child Care Affordability Program for eligible families.  To use the MPA’s Action Network to write a letter to your Rep and Senator on these supports for childcare in Maine go here. Remember Quality Child Care for all is great for the economy!!!!

    To support Sexual Abuse Survivors:

Ask your Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor and support “Virginia’s Law”, a billthat would  remove the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits related to sexual abuse and trafficking. This law, named after Virginia Guiffre an Epstein abuse survivor and outspoken advocate for justice,  would empower survivors by giving them a legal means to seek justice with not expiration date. More details on this law here

Contact Congressional Representatives to have ALL of the Epstein Files Released and

Support S. 2746, the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act:

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee (that oversees US banking) has been demanding access to Epstein’s finances. To this end, he introduced S. 2746 (the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act), which would require the Secretary of the Treasury to produce suspicious activity reports relating to Jeffrey Epstein and his associates.

More on this at Democracy Now

For a script and more information go to 5calls.orgSo far not a single perpetrator named in these files has been prosecuted. Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to cosponsor S. 2746 and to support the bill with members of the Senate Finance committee where the bill resides currently.

ICE related Actions    Call or write Senator King and Collins and ask them to vote against funding ICE and CBP in the appropriations bill that is currently waiting for approval – 60 votes needed. More details on this at 5calls.org    There is a move afoot to tax corporations who wish to build ICE prison camps in Maine at a higher level than regular corporate tax to offset the demands on local resources. Along with simply disallowing these camps through local zoning action and public outcry, cutting into the profit margin of these businesses is another way to dissuade them from trying to settle in Maine. ICE has 45 billion dollars to build/rent/purchase prison camp facilities – see a full report on this

    here from the Brennan Center.
Contact our Congressional Representatives to: Claw back the 175 BILLION dollar slush fund that was approved in the “OBBA”(The Budget Bill Passed this Summer), for Immigration enforcement actions over the next four years. Collins + King both voted in favor of the Sanders Amendment which clawed back 75 Billion from ICE and CBP. Thank them for this, and then ask them to clawback this funding, and defund ICE and CBP until they meet standards of conduct for police professionals. For more information and a script go to 5calls.org for defunding ICE, and here for the 175 Billion Dollar Clawback. Call/email your local Representative and Senator to supportLD 2106 “An Act to Prohibit the Disclosure of Nonpublic Records Without Proper Judicial Review” to make sure ICE can’t enter private spaces in hospitals, schools, and childcare centers (learn more here ).  MPA has an ACTION TOOLKIT on this bill here.  You can still submit testimony on this bill hereMaine’s Attorney General Aaron Frey has started an ICE tip-line Citizens are urged to report intimidating and excessive federal enforcement behavior to CitizenReporting.OAG@maine.gov. “Emailers should be advised that any content sent may be subject to public dissemination under Maine’s Freedom of Access Laws.

This legislation would prohibit federal funds from implementing the Executive Order Trump issued recently expanding the production of Glyphosphate and Phosphorous under the Defense Production act.

“What we would like to do is change the world — make it a little simpler for people to feed, clothe and shelter themselves as God intended them to do. And to a certain extent, by fighting for better conditions, by crying out unceasingly for the rights of the workers, of the poor, of the destitute–the rights of the worthy and the unworthy poor in other words, we can to a certain extent change the world; we can work for the oasis, the little cell of joy and peace in a harried world. We can throw our pebble in the pond and be confident that its ever widening circle will reach around the world. We can give away an onion………We repeat, there is nothing that we can do but love, and dear God — please enlarge our hearts to love each other, to love our neighbor, to love our enemy as well as our friend.”  Dorothy Day

    IB News: Friday, 3/13: Paraskevidekatriaphobia?!

… I bet you can’t say that five times fast. Paraskevidekatriaphobia is the fear of Friday the 13th, but you totally knew that already didn’t you? These days it feels like there is plenty to fear, but hopefully Friday the 13th isn’t one of them!

The war in Iran is raging on, having already cost an estimated $11.3 billion in just six short days and has unnecessarily taken the lives of nearly 1500 people. The Strait of Hormuz is blocked, impacting the global economy in ways the Trump administration, by their own admission, did not even consider. Who could have guessed? Sadly, Republicans have shown they are happy to continue to allow the president to illegally wage this war. Just this week, our very own Jared Golden joined Susan Collins in voting against a war powers resolution.

We are still contending with the proposed SAVE Act, with President Trump threatening to not sign any legislation until the act is passed. At this point, that might just be an improvement – however, Republican Senator John Cornyn is now supporting the removal of the filibuster. This move is a pretty transparent effort to curry favor with Trump to win an endorsement for his primary run-off in Texas. The SAVE Act is being billed as a voter id mandate, but just like the recent Question 1 in Maine last year, this bill is so, so much worse than that. This bill aims to disenfranchise millions of voters across the country – an effort Republicans will leverage to dismantle the blue tsunami that is building for November. Even more disappointing is that while Maine overwhelmingly voted against Question 1, Susan Collins has no problem supporting the bill. How is that representing Mainers?

Despite that, don’t spend time worrying about possible bad luck today, or how maybe your trip to Camp Crystal Lake might not be a good idea. Instead, spend that time contacting our legislators to let them know your thoughts on the SAVE Act, the War in Iran, the release of the Epstein-Trump files, or any number of the plethora of terrible things happening. We’ve listed how best to contact them here.

It’s not all doom and gloom though! Come spend some time with friends and like-minded people at Shamrock Sunday, a St. Patrick’s Day celebration hosted by the Greater Bangor Democratic Committee.

Food AND Medicine is having their 2026 membership campaign from March 3rd to April 3rd. If you are interested in helping, please submit a response here. If you would like to join FAM, you can do so on their website!

    NEWS

First 6 days of Iran war cost $11.3 billion

Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., told reporters Wednesday that he believes the amount is even higher, as the current figure does not include every aspect of the war.

“I expect that the current total operating number is significantly above that,” Coons said. “If all you’re looking at is the replacement cost for the munitions used, it’s already well beyond $10 billion.”

Susan Collins supports “Save America Act”

Despite Mainers voting overwhelmingly to reject the voter suppression measures list in Question 1 last November, Senator Collins has decided that she supports even stricter voter suppression measures. The bill recently passed in the House and will be up for vote in the Senate soon. From Bangor Daily News:

Trump has framed the bill as a national voter ID push, although it is slightly different than that. Democrats have argued it could still bar millions of people from voting, with the liberal Brennan Center for Justice saying 21 million Americans lack ready access to the documents that would be required to prove citizenship. Noncitizens are barred from voting in federal elections.

These anti-democratic bills could be fast-tracked through Congress, with the Save America Act passed in the U.S. House last week (SAVE Act passed in the House last year). These laws would require voters to prove their citizenship by showing a passport or birth certificate in order to register to vote — a requirement that would disenfranchise millions of voters. According to the Brennan Center, “21 million American citizens don’t have these documents readily available.”

This bill would especially burden military voters, tribal voters, rural voters, and survivors of natural disasters. Plus, are you someone who’s married and changed your name? Or just someone who’s changed your name? You, too, could be affected. This could also affect Mainers living near the border who might have been born at a Canadian hospital to U.S. parents.

The MEGA Act would prohibit the use of mail-in voting (like absentee voting) and Ranked Choice Voting. The bill promotes voter roll purges and criminalizes clerical errors by election workers. It’s a package of terrible ideas built upon false, debunked theories that our elections are not secure. Maine has the right to conduct our elections, which are already fair, transparent, and accessible. Let’s reject this federal intervention.

Letter: Tax the wealthy to fund programs for Mainers!

The state legislature is starting its budget process – where the rubber hits the road in terms of what our state really values. Here’s what your legislators need to hear from you:

    • DON’T conform to the Trump administration’s corporate tax giveaways, as the right is pressuring them to do
    • Support bills in the legislature, like LD 1089, LD 229, and LD 1879, to raise taxes on individuals with incomes over $1 million, modernize our tax brackets so people who make $60,000 aren’t paying at the same tax rate as people who make $600,000, and make sure that our state collects taxes from massive corporate profits. These could pass as bills, or end up in the budget – either way, legislators should fight for them!

This action is sponsored by our friends over at Maine People’s Alliance.

    Letter: Support childcare funding

Next week, our legislators will be considering a number of bills that will make Maine’s childcare system stronger.

This includes LD 1955, which will provide $15 million in ongoing funding for the Child Care Affordability Program. This will provide immediate relief to children and families who are currently on waitlists, while also ensuring future families can access affordable childcare without delays as they work, pursue education, or engage in job training.

LD 2066 will make the Child Care Affordability Program Educator Employment Award permanent. This will ensure that current employees at licensed childcare programs receive tuition support and will help to both recruit and retain qualified staff. And lastly, LD 1414 will increase infant and toddler payment rates through the Child Care Affordability Program for eligible families—making it easier for providers to offer affordable care for the youngest kids.

This action is sponsored by our friends over at Maine People’s Alliance.

Letter: Reject the Deportation & Detention Agenda

The Big Ugly Bill funneled enough money for ICE and Border Patrol to fund their terror for years to come. We have already seen how dangerous this is in communities across the country. Now the administration is trying to use this money to do a massive expansion in detention facilities across the country. They have been buying up properties, and sometimes actually converting warehouses into camps that will hold human beings, often in dangerous and horrifying conditions.

We have a chance to stop this expansion in its tracks, in partnership with experts across the country, by speaking up and demanding our elected officials speak up too. This is already working – and even some Republicans are criticizing the warehouses – from Pennsylvania, to Tennessee, and beyond. So let’s keep up the pressure.

Letter: Write a letter to the editor

Letters to the editor are published regularly in the local newspapers from Mainers who support the brutal tactics of the authoritarian Trump regime. Write a letter to set the record straight. NO KINGS PROTEST

    March 28, 2026 – Saturday

In 2025, millions of Americans came together in nonviolent protest to oppose the growing authoritarian actions of the Trump administration and affirm that this nation belongs to its people, not to kings. Since then, people have continued to rise up nonviolently against the Trump administration’s ongoing brutality and abuses of power, including the latest escalation in Minnesota. The No Kings Coalition is activating an immediate and ongoing nationwide digital organizing effort leading up to our next mass mobilization on March 28, including a flagship event in the Twin Cities.

Susan Collins Empty Chair Town Hall

    March 30, 2026 – Monday – 6:00 pm

Susan Collins hasn’t held a Town Hall in over 25 years. She is supposed to represent Mainers, yet refuses to face her constituents. That’s why Indivisible Bangor, alongside many other co-sponsors, is holding one for her. Enough is enough – it’s time YOUR voices are heard. We’ve invited Senator Collins to attend twice, but we’ve received no response.

All are welcome to attend to speak or listen. Those that wish to speak will have two minutes to do so.

Doors will open at 5:30pm and the Town Hall will take place from 6pm-8pm. Space is limited so all are encouraged to arrive early.

Emanuel’s Daily Action Email, Thursday, 3/12/26

Good Morning Folks, it’s a For the Heart Thursday. Amidst the sadness and conflict our administration is unleashing on the world, take a moment to honor all the energy being put into resisting them right now. The life force is strong – it’s why we have art, poetry, philosophy. I am attaching some new resistance music from a Mainer in the art section as an example of what we are doing right now, each in our own way.

Top Action to Take TodaySupport LD 1666, “An Act to Include in the Ranked-choice Election Method for General and Special Elections the Offices of Governor, State Senator and State Representative and to Make Other Related Changes” which will allow us to use Ranked Choice Voting in our Gubernatorial Race, local State and House races coming up this Fall. With Independent Rick Bennett running we could easily have a three way race with someone winning with less than a majority of the votes. There will be a public hearing on this bill at the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee on April 28th at 9:30. Call your local Rep. and Senator and ask them to support this bill, and if you know folks on the Committee, please talk to them as well. Let’s go local on this one!

For the Heart    For Your Heart this twelfth week of Winter: Walk with an open heart, balanced, with energy in your belly.

On the day when the weight deadens on your shouldersand you stumble, may the clay dance to balance you.And when your eyes freeze behind the grey windowand the ghost of loss gets in to you,may a flock of colours, indigo, red, green, and azure bluecome to awaken in youa meadow of delight.
When the canvas fraysin the currach of thoughtand a stain of oceanblackens beneath you,may there come across the watersa path of yellow moonlightto bring you safely home.
May the nourishment of the earth be yours, may the clarity of light be yours, may the fluency of the ocean be yours, may the protection of the ancestors be yours.
And so may a slowwind work these wordsof love around you,an invisible cloakto mind your life.

Trump has threatened not to sign any bills until this act is passed!

Maine Related Actions    Today there will be a public hearing on LD 2176

“An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” LD 2176 aims to establish a legal framework for individuals who have been unlawfully detained during immigration enforcement actions. It seeks to ensure that these individuals can seek judicial review and recover damages under the Maine Civil Rights Act. Ask your local representative and Senator to support it, and send in testimony to support it – see Contact section below to do this.

• Action 221: March 28 No Kings

Background:  If you do absolutely nothing else this month to save democracy, at least show up at the No Kings rally nearest you.  Ezra Levin of Indivisible has made the case persuasively that this is super important (1).

Action: To find your nearest rally, go to https://www.nokings.org, expand the map (+ sign in lower right), and RSVP to your nearest rally.  As of this writing, Hancock County shows events in Castine, Deer Isle, Ellsworth, Penobscot, and Southwest Harbor.  (Cherryfield, Belfast or Bangor may be closer for some of us.)

For ongoing inspiration on signage, check out Robert Hubbell’s substack and scroll to the photos at the end of each post.  https://roberthubbell.substack.com.  There have been many photos from Maine over the last year, but also from all over the nation!  It’s very inspiring. Dictators and cult leaders always try to make you feel isolated.  They are failing.  If we persist – if we unite – democracy WILL overcome the forces of fascistic plutocracy.

Emanuel’s Daily Action Email, Wednesday, 3/11/26

Good Morning Folks, the weather has turned warm for the minute – please get out and enjoy a few minutes in the natural world – we are so blessed in Maine. Today we return like a boomerang to the Epstein files.  For an illuminating conversation about how people are researching them go to Heather Cox Richardson’s interview with Congressman Maxwell Frost here  If you want to activate your inner librarian, you too could be part of the crowd sourcing of information from these files go here for more information. (Let me know if you find out which specific groups are working on wha and I will post them.)

Top Action to Take TodayContact King, Collins, Pingree or Golden to demand the following in relation to the Epstein Files

Demand the DOJ release all documents legally mandated by the Epstein Files Transparency Act, (and)  call for Trump to be deposed under oath to investigate the sexual misconduct allegations detailed in the files, (and) call for public hearings and investigations into the alleged abuses revealed by the documents, (and) call for the resignations of Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Deputy Todd Blanche.  For more on this please go to 5calls.org

More Actions Today if You Have the BandwidthContact King, Collins, Pingree, and Golden to stop the funding for the Iran War.

You should email Attorney If you did that on Friday, thanks much, and here is one more thing you can do on this issue, which really is enormous as far as maintaining a free press goes:

Keep glyphosate out of our food supply:

This legislation would prohibit federal funds from implementing the Executive Order Trump issued recently expanding the production of Glyphosphate and Phosphorous under the Defense Production act.

  • Action 220: Postcarding 101

Background:  Sending personal, handwritten postcards has been proven effective in getting people to decide to vote. (1) Plus, postcarding is FUN, whether you do it solo or at a postcard party!  If you sign up with one of the campaigns listed under RESOURCES, below, you will be provided with a script that has been “vetted” as effective, as well as a list of names and addresses which are unique to you, assuring that the pool of recipients is as broad as possible.  True, the price of postcard stamps has risen dramatically over the last few years, but a sheet of 20 stamps costs only $12.20 – a very affordable way to boost turnout.  You can use a quarter sheet of cardstock to make a postcard of your own design (see the image below of the cards Brooksville sent out in 2024.)  Or you can buy a package of 10 pre-stamped cards for $6.90 from the post office (see RESOURCES).

    Action:   So, the steps are:

    1. Select a campaign from the RESOURCES section below.  (All other things being equal, consider selecting Field Team 6, because of the Maine focus).  Enroll in the campaign.  Read their literature about the importance of sending a proven script that doesn’t threaten the voter!

    2. Decide if you want to go solo, or create a local group to enjoy postcarding with you. If you are creating a group, mutually decide on your date, time and location, allowing lead time to assemble all your materials: (cards, pens, stamps, script(s).  If you have the bandwidth, provide cookies!

That’s it.  Easy-peasy, fun, and effective!

Emanuel’s Daily Action Email, Tuesday, 3/10/26

Good Morning Folks, it’s a “Tesla Tuesday”, remember those anti-Musk protests? We are carpet bombing Iran; they have chosen a new leader and show no signs of regime changing. Let’s get Congress to put up enough resistance that Trump declares victory (or unconditional surrender on behalf of the Iranians) and moves on.

Top Action to Take TodayContact King, Collins, Pingree, and Golden to stop the funding for the Iran War. Indivisible has set up a quick email you can send to them here. They advise Congress should: assert immediate oversight, continue forcing votes on War Powers Resolutions, restrict or cut off any supplemental funding for the war, and publicly oppose the war. This war is costing a billion dollars a day that is coming from our taxes, our healthcare, + jacking up our food and gas prices. The war mongers need Democratic votes to support any further funding for this travesty of an excursion as Trump called it yesterday. After you email your folks, call them with the same message.

More Actions Today if You Have the BandwidthIf you haven’t yet, please contact Aaron Frey Maine’s Attorney General and ask him to join Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General in launching an anti trust suit against the companies that will be owned by one man – David Ellison – a huge Trump backer. You can call Aaron at:

     (207) 626-8800.If you did that on Friday, thanks much, and here is one more thing you can do on this issue, which really is enormous as far as maintaining a free press goes:

Trump has threatened not to sign any bills until this act is passed!

Contact our Congressional Representatives to: Claw back the 175 BILLION dollar slush fund that was approved in the “OBBA”(The Budget Bill Passed this Summer), for Immigration enforcement actions over the next four years. “Everywhere we see greed and bigotry being celebrated, and bullying and mockery masquerading as strength. We see science and expertise denigrated, while ignorance and dishonesty and cruelty and corruption are reaping untold rewards. Every single day. We see that, and it’s hard to hope…Giving up hope, as my book says, would be unforgivable. We owe staying in this fight to Reverend Jackson and to other leaders who have fought to make this country better. We owe it to the foot soldiers who marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge 61 years ago in Selma, Alabama, and to everyone who marches today. Giving up is not an option.”   Barak Obama

    ACTIONS

    Event: Attend an event!

Events are easy to attend and only require a small amount of time investment – some you can even attend from the comfort of your own couch! Take a look at the upcoming events below and register.

Petition: Sign “A Winning Democratic Strategy” Petition

This petition lists a number of items that Democrats should pledge to do.

Contact: Oppose the SAVE Act, MEGA Act, and Save America Act

Take action on the SAVE Act, the MEGA Act, and the Save America Act.

    Contact: Support Sexual Abuse Survivors

Ask your Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor and support “Virginia’s Law”, a bill that would remove the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits related to sexual abuse and trafficking. This law, named after Virginia Guiffre an Epstein abuse survivor and outspoken advocate for justice, would empower survivors by giving them a legal means to seek justice with no expiration date. Given the horrendous treatment survivors have gotten through the unredacted release of their names in the current Epstein Files release, this is a small step Congress can take to redress the harm done.

More details on this in the Guardian.

Letter: Write a letter to the editor

Letters to the editor are published regularly in the local newspapers from Mainers who support the brutal tactics of the authoritarian Trump regime. Write a letter to set the record straight. Click the button to go to the Bangor Daily News “Submit a letter or column” page, the Portland Press Herald “Letters to the editor” page, and the “Letter to the Editor” page at the Ellsworth American.

Contact: Call or email your legislators

If you want an easy way to actually do something, check out 5calls.org. You enter your location, pick an issue you care about, and it gives you your representatives’ phone numbers and a script. That’s it. Calling your elected officials is one of the most effective forms of civic engagement there is!

  • Action 219: Maine Legislation 3/9-3/13

Things are really coming to an end in this legislative session.  Very few public hearings, but a lot of work sessions leading to final votes.  Some of the bills with hearings are quite technical and specialized.  On Monday, for example, a bill to tinker yet again with the school funding formula, and on Tuesday a bill to require financial guarantees by certain solid waste processing facilities.

On Wednesday, LD 2176, a very important bill titled “An Act to Create a Right to Judicial Review Under the Maine Civil Rights Act for Persons Erroneously Detained” will have another hearing.  The previous public hearing was held on 10 Feb, and you can read the 22 testimony items.  They are worth your time to read, because they may help restore your faith in humanity.  The bill has many sponsors, all Democrats.  The members of the other party seem to have lost their humanity, or at least they have lost the courage to speak out when obvious wrongs are being committed.

At the same time there will be a hearing on a confusing bill (a former “concept draft”), to require the Maine Dept. of Economic and Community Development to “study” existing financial incentives that benefit data centers. Why doesn’t the bill just stop with its other provision, which is to remove data centers from eligibility for the business equipment tax exemption and the business incentives program?  We certainly don’t need or want to open the door to any financial incentives for the billionaires’ data centers!  Maybe the intent of the study is to find other existing incentives with a goal of moving more of them out of reach of data centers.  That would be a good thing.

On March 12 we are presented with a totally obscure “concept draft” with no detail whatsoever, titled “An Act to Strengthen the Health Care System in Maine”.  A complete mystery about a vitally important subject.

I will probably be wrapping up these legislative sendouts as the legislature winds down.  Also there probably won’t be new Action Items from me until April.  (Going on a mud season vacation!) But I urge you to sign up to receive either Emanuel Pariser’s email (emanuel.pariser@gmail.com) or the one compiled by Shelly (Baypottery@pm.me), or both.  They are excellent resources and will keep you very, very busy, productively saving our nation.  And don’t forget to participate in one of the No Kings protest rallies on March 28!  They will be happening everywhere, and they are important
