Following this newsletter is the “Top Action to Take Today” from Emanuel’s Daily Action Email, with a link to his great list of important actions and information (12/4).

Also, TWO new & urgent actions from Hancock County Democrats:

~Action 184 – The “Fix It Act” (12/5), that discusses the bipartisan bill, HR 6010, the Fix It Act, that aims to extend the ACA premium tax credits by two years.

~Action 185 – Now it’s the Architects! (12/5) discusses that the profession of architecture is also no longer to be recognized as a qualifying profession by the Department of Education.

Also, check out the latest from the Bold Coast Civic Alliance (12/4) with information about impeaching Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, extending the ACA tax credits, and adverse effect that the redefining of professional programs by Trump’s Department of Education will have.

A lot of research goes into these additional actions, so be sure to read them!

And “thank you” to supporters who have been donating to our ActBlue fund!

    Shopping Boycott

    We (still) Ain’t Buying It

The shopping boycott weekend is over, but if you can, continue to focus on local businesses and others that are not collaborating with the Trump administration.

Effective boycotts take time and sacrifice and we CAN do it!

Home Depot has allowed its parking lots to become ground zero for ICE raids on immigrant day laborers, and its billionaire co-founder Bernie Marcus has funneled millions into Trump’s campaigns.

Target, which once branded itself as the friendly, inclusive big-box store, has now scrapped its DEI goals and scaled back LGBTQ+ offerings to avoid angering the regime.

Amazon didn’t just shower Trump’s inauguration with cash — Jeff Bezos’ company pitched facial-recognition tools to ICE and powers the Palantir systems ICE uses to track and deport immigrants, making Amazon a core contractor for the regime’s deportation machine. (Amazon owns Audible.com, Whole Foods Market, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) Studios, Ring doorbell cameras, and other companies, so keep those in mind, too-George).

If you have any suggestions or ideas for alternatives to these stores, drop me a line here!

    Home Depot Picketing
    Saturday, 12/6

We will be out there every Saturday at noon for the next three Saturdays with our signs for an hour to inform people about Home Depot’s complicity with and support of the Trump administration.

UMaine Grad Workers Union Forum – The State of Affordability in Maine
    Tuesday, 12/9 -UMaine

Join Grad Workers, ME Legislators, and the community for an important public forum discussion on affordability for workers at the Universities of Maine!

One of the major issues that we as Graduate Workers have been working to address in our first union contract is the crisis of affordability for GWs. Cost of living has risen dramatically over the last five years, and yet GW pay has not gone up since 2022, healthcare expenses have skyrocketed, and the economic pressures on GWs are worse than ever. The University of Maine System as a public institution that should be lifting up Maine families, not perpetuating low wage, low benefit working conditions.

Where: UMaine Orono Campus, building and room TBD

Bangor Town Hall and Food Drive with Nirav Shah!
    Tuesday, 12/9

Also on Tuesday evening, 12/9, a Town Hall and Food Drive in Bangor with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Nirav Shah.

This will be a great opportunity to hear directly from Nirav, ask questions, and share what matters most to you and your community. We encourage attendees to come ready with questions — and as Nirav likes to say, there is only one rule: no easy questions! Nirav is excited to listen, learn, and engage with you on the issues that matter most.

FOOD DRIVE: In the spirit of supporting our neighbors ahead of the holiday season we will also be hosting a food drive at the event. If you’re able, please consider bringing a non-perishable food donation to help families in need. We are collecting items for local food pantries. Items in high demand: peanut butter, canned tuna and chicken, pasta / pasta sauce, cereals, granola bars.

We hope to see you there — let’s come together, talk about the future of Maine, and support our community!

Ask Governor Mills to NOT VETO LD 1971

    From the Maine People’s Alliance:

“Governor Mills refused to sign this bill into law in the last legislative session and will have just 3 days in the new legislative session starting January 7, 2026, to either veto the bill or allow it to become law without her signature.

“The immoral and illegal actions of ICE throughout the United States and in Maine including arresting parents outside of schools, terrorizing immigrant communities, and attempting to intimidate and assault lawful protestors and those who would document their actions must be resisted. Maine law enforcement should be free to focus on their jobs in keeping the people of Maine safe from crime and not compelled to support immigration enforcement outside of criminal investigations.”

President Trump has singled out our Somali friends and neighbors, targeting them in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, for the next ICE terror campaign:

Trump ‘garbage’ rhetoric about Somalis draws cheers from administration, silence from Republicans and alarm from critics, Reuters, 12/4/2025

ICE agents to descend on Twin Cities as soon as this week, sources tell ABC News, KSTP, 12/4/2025

Maine has a vibrant Somali community and we need to stand with them, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because we know that the ICE terror campaign will not stop with immigrants. Please call Governor Janet Mills and ask her to allow LD 1971 to become law and please contact your senators and congressional representatives and let them know you object to Donald Trump’s use of DHS agencies to terrorize people in our cities. There is a handy list of links at the bottom of this email, tap the link below.

Cancel Spotify Until They Stop Collaborating with ICE

    From Indivisible Project:

Today, social media feeds are full of people sharing their Spotify Wrapped results, while Spotify is full of … ICE recruitment ads.

Here are a few things you can do right now:

    • If you’re still paying for Spotify premium, cancel your subscription. We’ve got instructions (and some suggestions on alternatives) here
(I have found a fun streaming site, Soma.FM, based in San Francisco, that is listener supported and features an eclectic selection of channels! -George).
    • Don’t use Spotify’s free version either. You don’t need to delete your account. Just close out your apps and don’t open them again until Spotify stops forcing ICE ads into people’s feeds.
    • Instead of sharing your Spotify Wrapped this year, share our Wrapped-themed posts calling on others to cancel Spotify. As long as Spotify is willing to take money from ICE, they don’t need (and don’t deserve) free advertising on our social feeds. And there’s no reason you can’t post your own list of top songs/artists on social — maybe alongside a message about why you chose not to stream them on Spotify.
    • Use this social media moment to have GENTLE, NON-SHAMING conversations with friends about the Spotify boycott. Seriously, no one is going to respond well to judgy DMs when they’re just trying to post something fun about the music they like. So approach with kindness, maybe compliment their music tastes, and then talk about why you’ve decided to stream from other platforms for the time being (one point you can make: Those platforms probably treat their favorite artists much, much better than Spotify does).
    • Help us track the growth of this economic campaign by taking our one-question survey

Donate to a Food Bank or Pantry

The shutdown is over, but the need is not. There are still cuts to programs that help people with food and other needs.

Please DONATE to a local food pantry- food, personal items, and even cash.  Faith Linking in Action maintains a database of all food pantries and free meals– organized by both location and day of the week– in the Bangor area. Check it out here.

Also, ActivateMaine has created a site, SNAP Into Action: “a statewide effort to help those who are affected by the freezing of benefits due to the Government shut down.” If you know of any food drives that are happening, please visit this site to add it to the database!

And now to the Emanuel’s Daily Call to Action:

Action Friday December 5th: Ask Our Congressional Representatives to Vote to Extend the ACA Tax Credits With the Fixit Act

Good Morning Folks, it’s Friday and wicked cold (-6.6 in Weld this morning). Dress warmly when you go out, and heat that car up!

    Top Action to Take Today:

Ask our congressional representatives to Extend the ACA tax credits by voting for the FixIt Act.  This act proposes a two-year extension of enhanced ACA premium tax credits, paying for it by cracking down on Medicare Advantage fraud and insurance broker misconduct. The act would prevent a significant premium increase for millions of Americans, while the bill would also implement new income caps and fraud safeguards. This vote is what the Republicans offered King and Democrats if they supported the CR budget bill that re-opened the government in November. The vote will come as soon as December 10th! Please write an email or call King, Collins, Golden and/or Pingree and ask them to vote IN FAVOR of the Fixit Act! For more on the ACA tax credits go here. (Thanks to Abbie McMillen for this action)

With great appreciation for all the engagement everywhere!

  • Action 185 – Now it’s the Architects!

A message from the Hancock Country Democrats:

Background: We wrote in Action 183 and its addendum, that the Department of Education is planning to reduce the amount that people entering certain professions can borrow at advantageous rates, so that they can afford the necessary education and training. They plan to do this by downgrading those professions into non-professions. It should be widely recognized by now that the real purpose for this action is not to save the government money – the loans are overwhelmingly repaid with interest(92% either fully repaid or on track) – but to drive those motivated borrowers into the arms of predatory lenders, just the kind of people this administration seems to like to “pal around with”.

It’s now surfaced that the profession of architecture is also no longer to be recognized as a qualifying profession (along with the medical professionals (1). The result will be that fewer students from non-affluent backgrounds will be able to enter the architectural profession. Also, downgrading architecture to non-professional status, in addition to being absurd on its face, will result in loss of respect for the profession, which adds to the discouragement of young people from joining. This is apparently just fine with the plutocrats, but is a huge loss to our nation, a wanton destruction of our intellectual capital, which after all is what has made America truly great.

The new rules are set to go into effect July 1, so there is time to build a groundswell if we all get started right away in our particular spheres of influence.  Let’s talk to all the architects we know. Are they aware? What are they doing? Can they join with the other professions that are affected, to get our elected legislators involved? Our legislators need to demand that regular procedures be followed for all these reclassifications, with formal hearings (congressional as well as administrative) and opportunity for public comment. This is a good time to build on the new erosion of trust in the Trump government (“by and for the billionaires”).

Action:  Forward this action item to the architects you know, and/or write to AIA Maine. Also alert our delegation on all the DOE’s stupid and ignorant reclassifications in the service of predatory lenders. They need to hold hearings!

  • Action 184 – The “Fix It Act”

A message from the Hancock Country Democrats:

Background: As you know, the Big Ugly Bill deep six’d the subsidies that made Affordable Care Act premiums actually affordable for a lot of folks (like around 22 million of our fellow citizens). After a lot of hemming and hawing, the Congress is finally (apparently) going to take a vote on extending “enhanced ACA premium tax credits” past their expiration date of December 31. A current bipartisan bill, HR 6010, the Fix It Act, (1) proposes a two-year extension of enhanced ACA premium tax credits, paying for it by cracking down on Medicare Advantage fraud and insurance broker misconduct. This would prevent a significant premium increase for millions of Americans, while the bill would also implement new income caps and fraud safeguards. The Coalition on Human Needs- CHN – (2) has sent a request that we pressure our delegation into signing on to this measure or at least vote for it. It’s not a complete answer to the problem, but at least it’s something. Just don’t let the media fool you into thinking it’s the whole answer. We need a complete overhaul of the medical insurance situation (like, single payer health care nationwide…which should be a plank in the Democratic party platform!)

Action: Write a letter in your own words and send to our delegation, or phone them! This is much more effective than sending a “canned” letter. You don’t have to lard your letter with statistics or rationale – they’ve heard all that. Just tell them what youwant them to do! And ask for a reply.

Good morning!! Here is today’s (shorter!) newsletter from Indivisible Bangor.

Also, actions from Hancock County Democrat: Action 183 – We Need Nurses (11/24), that discusses the U.S. Department of Education’s plan to reclassify a number of professions, such as nursing, physician assistants, and social workers, as “not professional” (Newsweek, 11/21), which will adversely affect the way students can borrow money for their education. This is part of the Big Beautiful Bill that was passed this past summer and the MAGA attack on higher education. And it is worth noting that these real professions attract a high number of women to them-this is not a coincidence.

NEW- check out the latest from the Bold Coast Civic Alliance (12/4) with information about impeaching Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, extending the ACA tax credits, and adverse effect that the redefining of professional programs by Trump’s Department of Education will have.

There is a handy list of links at the bottom of this email, tap the link below.

    The Maine ICE Watch Hotline

The purpose of the hotline is to protect immigrant families by providing accurate, real-time information about ICE and Border Patrol activity and connect Maine families to resources and support services during a time of heightened enforcement and targeting of immigrants and refugees.

And now to the Emanuel’s Daily Call to Action:

Action Thursday December 3d: For the Heart – Portland Students Walkout + Ask Governor Mills to let LD 1971 Become Law

Good Morning Folks, it’s a Thursday for The Heart. And, with some heartening news – in our Portland, (Maine), 500 high school students walked out of their public and private schools to protest the abduction of two of their classmates by ICE. Go here for the full story!!! (thanks Diane for this info.!!)

    Top Action to Take Today:

In Solidarity with Portland High School students, here are a few related actions you can take in response to ICE abductions in MaineAsk Governor Mills to let LD 1971 , an act which forbids Maine Law Enforcement and other public offices from doing the work of ICE, go into law. (She can no longer sign it, but she can veto it.) Go here to email or call her at (207) 287-3531.   Remember in Nazi Germany, and in many other fascist government take-overs, action starts with scapegoating a perceived “outside” group of people such as Immigrants, Jews, Roma, Buddhists, etc.  For more NO-ICE Home Depot actions go to the “More Actions” section of this email.

    For the Heart

    A Note

    Life is the only way

    to get covered in leaves,

catch your breath on the sand,

    rise on wings;

    to be a dog,

    or stroke its warm fur;

    to tell pain

    from everything it’s not;

    to squeeze inside events,

    dawdle in views,

to seek the least of all possible mistakes.

    An extraordinary chance

    to remember for a moment

    a conversation held

    with the lamp switched off;

    and if only once

    to stumble upon a stone,

end up soaked in one downpour or another,

    mislay your keys in the grass;

    and to follow a spark on the wind with your eyes;

and to keep on not knowing

    something important.

More Actions Today if You Have the Bandwidth

Ask our Senators and Congressional Representatives to demand a resignation or begin impeachment proceedings for Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense.  He is now guilty of war crimes due to his ordering the killing of wounded combatants on a boat blown up twice in September by US drones. Both King and Collins voted AGAINST his nomination in the first place. For more information on this go here.

While you are at it, Ask Representatives Pingree and Golden to support the No Unauthorized Force in Venezuela Act bill presented by Seth Moulton and others. (This war on Venezuela is about OIL – Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world, and it is a distraction from the…..EPSTEIN FILES)

On Tuesday, Congressman Seth Moulton (MA-06), along with Reps. Jake Auchincloss (MA-04), Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06), Jimmy Panetta (CA-19), and Eugene Vindman (VA-07), announced the introduction of new legislation, called the No Unauthorized Force in Venezuela Act, at a press conference by the House steps.
The No Unauthorized Force in Venezuela Act prohibits the executive branch from spending any federal funds on the use of military inside Venezuela or against Venezuelan forces, including remote or intermittent strikes, unless Congress passes a specific Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF).

Congressman Moulton, a Marine Corps veteran who served four tours in Iraq, emphasized that the legislation is urgently needed in light of recent developments. For a live stream broadcast of his press conference go here.

Home Depot Actions – For more Anti-Ice activities go to: Ice Out of Home Depot to sign a petition sent to Home Depot headquarters, personalize this letter to Home Depot Execs and send it to them, and publicly comment on Home Depot’s social media posts with these demands: Publicly condemn ICE raids, Stop cooperating with ICE – close stores and parking lots to agents, Protect workers and customers from attacks, Help detained victims and support their families, Release security video and other footage of enforcement actions at Home Depot stores. (Thanks to Mid Maine Indivisible for this info.)

Last week Trump posted execution threats towards Democratic lawmakers who are all former military/CIA who posted a video asking troops not to obey illegal orders: Ask Pingree and Golden to join the effort begun yesterday by Representative Al Greene to begin impeachment hearings. There is no walking this threat of violence back.

Trump and his gang have started an illegal war through extra-judicial killings in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific. A dozen civilian vessels have been blown up and dozens of people killed, with no hearings, no due process. .  Trump wants to distract from his problems at home by creating a “war” on drug traffickers in which he can order anyone he wants killed by claiming they are drug dealers.  What could go wrong? The Senate voted down S.J. Res 90  which directs the “cessation of US military involvement in any non-congressionally authorized hostilities with Venezuela.” Collins voted against the resolution despite her protestations of concern, King voted for. Our lawmakers should be demanding an investigation of these murders NOW, as well as a say in stopping a war with Venezuela!! For more information go here

ActivateMaine has created a site, SNAP Into Action: “a statewide effort to help those who are affected by the freezing of benefits due to the Government shut down.”  Even though the Government is “open” now, hunger issues continue for people around the country.

Libraries that do not conform to the rule would not be eligible for inter-library loans or the digital lending services the state provides. No funds were offered to small libraries to meet this new rule. This ruling, if enacted would affect libraries all over the state, and force closings and restrict services. Please email Brian Cundick, Chair of the Commission, at bryce.cundick@maine.edu, to let him know you oppose this ruling and why. For more details on this situation and what libraries would be affected go to the Maine Monitor’s article on this issue. Actions

    1) Push for the impeachment and removal from office of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth:

It’s beyond unacceptable to have a Secretary of Defense who rejects the Geneva Conventions and orders war crimes. Trump’s Teflon seems to have protected Hegseth against any real blowback from Signalgate, his demands for loyalty oaths from journalists, and every other ridiculous thing he’s done, but his excitement about killing is seriously sick and cannot be ignored. Senator Mark Kelly, whose death for “sedition” both Trump and Hegseth have demanded, gets right to the point: https://newrepublic.com/post/203827/mark-kelly-pete-hegseth-donald-trump-playing-army

Contact Senators King and Collins and Congressman Golden to call for impeachment proceedings on Hegseth. (Hakeem Jeffries has said the House Dems will NOT pursue impeachment against Hegseth because there’s zero chance it would pass with Republicans in charge, even if it were to make it to the floor, which he is sure it won’t. I think we can still ask Jared Golden to speak up about and get involved with any and all ways to make clear to America that Hegseth is massively unqualified for the job.)

Related: Urge Jared Golden to support the No Unauthorized Force in Venezuela Act, which would prohibit the executive branch from spending any federal funds on the use of military inside Venezuela or against Venezuelan forces, including remote or intermittent strikes, unless Congress passes a specific Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF).

    2)  Keep pushing for an extension of the ACA tax credits:
Remember how the Democrats in the Senate allowed the shutdown to end by giving up on their demand for an extension of the ACA tax credits and accepting, instead, the promise of a vote on the subject? That vote looks like it could happen next week, and given the way the GOP members of Congress freaked out at Trump’s plan to extend those credits for 2 years, they seem pretty determined to stick with their own plans to continue screwing their own constituents out of affordable health insurance. Almost everyone wants—needs—those credits extended: Without those subsidies, millions of Americans will face financial or health disaster—or both—and the resulting diminished market will raise costs further for everyone else, possibly even collapsing the entire healthcare system in this country.
Contact Senators King and Collins and make sure they know you want those tax credits extended. Susan Collins has called the extension of these credits a “poison pill,” so we know she’s not planning to vote for it. Let her know this is a slap in the face to all her constituents who will be directly affected by her obvious lack of compassion.
On the House side, Hakeem Jeffries has introduced a discharge petition to force a vote in the House on a bill to extend the ACA premium tax credits by three years. Contact Congressman Golden to thank him for signing on to this discharge petition and urge him to keep fighting for affordable healthcare for Mainers.

    3)  Oppose the Trump administration’s dismantling of the Department of Education and its vital programs and workforce:
Another nasty measure sneaked into the One Big Disgusting Bill now coming to light: The hugely diminished Department of Education now programmed to eat its own tail and consume itself entirely has announced changes to the degrees that are considered “professional.” Whether a degree is considered “professional” will influence how much reimbursement a student receives for their higher education and decrease the student loan caps for these degree programs.
Not included in the newly proposed list of professional degrees are nursing, physician assistants, physical therapists, educators, social workers, audiologists, architects, and accountants.
This is absurd. As those of us in rural parts of the country already know, we need more well-trained professionals, not fewer. Our state—really, most of our country—is already experiencing a decline in healthcare providers, teachers, social workers, etc. This is a complicated issue with many varied and valid explanations, but the bottom line is that adding to the problem is not a reasonable response. It will help no one to make it harder for less-wealthy but smart and talented students to train for these high-demand professions.
Contact Senators King and Collins and Congressman Golden to make sure they know that we know about this development and are outraged by it. We need our representatives to push back against these revised qualifications and limits to related student loans. I’m sure solving the overall problem will take some thinking out of the box, but preventing more people from being able to study for high-demand jobs is not the way to change things for the better. If you have any personal stories related to this issue, from your own experience or that of family or friends, share them. That’s one of the best ways to reach whatever these politicians might have left of their heartstrings.

    4)  Sign a petition to keep our air safe from fine-particle pollution:

The Trump administration just announced it will abandon a critical rule that strengthened limits on deadly fine-particle pollution (PM2.5) — a move scientists warn will lead to dirtier air, more asthma attacks, more heart and lung disease, and thousands of preventable deaths. IB News, Wednesday, 12/3: Matt Dunlap Town Hall Tomorrow; Tenn Election Update; UMaine Grad Workers Union Forum

Good morning!! Here is today’s (shorter!) newsletter from Indivisible Bangor.

Following this newsletter is the “Top Action to Take Today” from Emanuel’s Daily Action Email, with a link to his great list of important actions and information for the week.

Also, check out the latest from the Bold Coast Civic Alliance (11/24) that asks to save the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and to pressure Apple to take back its donation to Trump’s ballroom.

    Home Depot Picketing
    Saturday, 12/6

We had a nice turnout on Saturday, 11/29, that sunny, but windy day. Our signs were clear and visible to the drivers on Stillwater Ave in Bangor, both passing by and going in and coming out of the Home Depot shopping center. While we got a few “fingers,” a few thumbs down, and a few drivers hollering at us, the overwhelming response was supportive honks, thumbs up, and waves & smiles!

We will be out there every Saturday at noon for the next three Saturdays with our signs for an hour to inform people about Home Depot’s complicity with and support of the Trump administration.

UMaine Grad Workers Union Forum – The State of Affordability in Maine

Join Grad Workers, ME Legislators, and the community for an important public forum discussion on affordability for workers at the Universities of Maine!

One of the major issues that we as Graduate Workers have been working to address in our first union contract is the crisis of affordability for GWs. Cost of living has risen dramatically over the last five years, and yet GW pay has not gone up since 2022, healthcare expenses have skyrocketed, and the economic pressures on GWs are worse than ever. The University of Maine System as a public institution that should be lifting up Maine families, not perpetuating low wage, low benefit working conditions.

    The Tennessee Election

Even though Aftyn Behn did not win last night, the margin was very close!

    From WPLN, Nashville:

“Republican Matt Van Epps has won Tennessee’s 7th Congressional seat, in a special election that turned into an unexpected battleground. Van Epps fended off Democratic state Rep. Aftyn Behn with nearly 53% of the vote, a much narrower margin than previous years.

“The contest attracted national attention and millions of dollars from outside groups and both political parties — a departure from last year’s race when now-retired U.S. Rep. Mark Green scored a 22-point victory without much campaigning. Both parties have looked to this race as an indicator of how next year’s midterm elections may go.”

And now to the Emanuel’s Daily Call to Action:

Action Wednesday December 3d: Ask Our Senators and Representatives to Call for Pete Hegseth’s Impeachment + Stop the War Plans for Venezuela

Good Morning Folks, it’s the first Wednesday of December. Another “win” last night – Democrat Aftyn Behn came within 8.8% points of beating Republican Matt Van Epps in a deep red congressional district in deep red Tennessee. This was a district that Trump won last year by 22% points!! She ran on an anti-oligarch, progressive platform and will continue organizing.

    Top Action to Take Today:

Ask our Senators and Congressional Representatives to support an impeachment resolution for Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense.  He is now guilty of war crimes due to his ordering the killing of wounded combatants on a boat blown up in September by US drones.

More Actions Today if You Have the Bandwidth

Masked ICE and Customs and Border Patrol continue to abduct people in Maine. Several of these kidnappings have happened at Home Depots around Maine. Here are a few related actions you can take in response. Ask Governor Mills to let LD 1971 , an act which forbids Maine Law Enforcement and other public offices from doing the work of ICE, go into law.

For more Anti-Ice activities go to: Ice Out of Home Depot to sign a petition sent to Home Depot headquarters, personalize this letter to Home Depot Execs and send it to them, and publicly comment on Home Depot’s social media posts with these demands: Publicly condemn ICE raids, Stop cooperating with ICE – close stores and parking lots to agents, Protect workers and customers from attacks, Help detained victims and support their families, Release security video and other footage of enforcement actions at Home Depot stores.

For more details on this situation and what libraries would be affected go to the Maine Monitor’s article on this issue. IB News, Monday, 12/01: TOMORROW- Matt Dunlap Town Hall,

Good morning on this first day of December!! Here is today’s newsletter from Indivisible Bangor.

Following this newsletter is Emanuel’s Daily Action Email from Augusta -a great list of important actions and information.

Also, check out the latest from the Bold Coast Civic Alliance (11/24) that asks to save the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and to pressure Apple to take back its donation to Trump’s ballroom.

A lot of research goes into these additional actions, so be sure to read them!

And “thank you” to supporters who have been donating to our ActBlue fund!

    We Ain’t Buying It

    From Ezra at Indivisible National:

What we’re experiencing in America now is strikingly similar to what other democracies that have collapsed into authoritarianism have experienced.

Yes, it’s a right-wing government passing right-wing laws that cut healthcare to give tax cuts to right-wing donors. But the fight is over more than just the national legislature or with the executive branch. In an authoritarian breakthrough moment, the regime attacks or co-opts other sources of power in a society as well — media, law firms, universities, businesses, political critics, and even comedians.

We’ve seen this story play out again and again — in Serbia under Milošević, Hungary under Orbán, Turkey under Erdoğan, Russia under Putin. The regime guts the judiciary, shutters newsrooms, attacks universities, brands NGOs as foreign agents, undermines the political opposition, bullies businesses into submission, and even drives satirical shows off the air.

And now we’re seeing it in America.

Businesses are caving to regime pressure or simply obeying in advance. Since Trump took office, we’ve seen corporations and billionaires rush to bend the knee. The list is so long it can feel like cowardice is just part of the culture now:

    • Companies like Target preemptively ended their DEI and trans-inclusive policies.
    • Companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft forked over millions to Trump’s inauguration slush fund.
    • Companies like Spotify are running ads to recruit for the regime’s secret police.
    • Companies like Facebook/Meta, Comcast, and T-Mobile helped fund the destruction of the East Wing of the White House.
    • Media companies like ABC and CBS have embarrassed themselves with a pro-Trump lurch away from real journalism.

I could go on, but you get the gist: A huge number of companies have decided that their interests are best advanced by throwing their lot in with the regime. For those collaborators and capitulators, it’s simply a business calculation. And that’s why it’s time for us to change the math.

This Black Friday weekend, we’re joining with a super-team of organizers — the Target Three, Black Voters Matter Fund, Until Freedom, Working Families Party, 50501, and more — to issue a shared collective call: We Ain’t Buying It.

We Ain’t Buying It is a movement action to flex our power by zeroing in on three targets — companies who have, each in their own way, enabled Trump’s agenda:

We want to concentrate our focus on three notable consumer-facing enablers because we’ve seen that organizing is far more effective when it is concentrated and easy to join in on.

That doesn’t mean our three targets are the only problem. But if we can get their attention and provide impetus for them to shape up, we’ll send every other consumer-facing company the message that even a quiet decision to enable this administration might trigger widespread consumer outrage.

And that message, if we land it, will be heard all across the corporate world. Then, rinse and repeat!

And now to the Emanuel’s morning Call to Action:

Action Monday December 1st: Keep Maine’s Rural Libraries Open – Submit Comments to The Maine Library Commission

Good Morning Folks, December here, now.  Cold weather coming in. If you still have stuff growing outside cover it for the next few days! I know the list below is long and daunting – pick one thing to do this week, or a couple, whatever you can do adds to the power of our resistance. Thanks for engaging.

    Top Action to Take Today:

The Maine Library Commission has delayed a vote taken recently to require small public libraries throughout rural Maine to hire a lead librarian, and stay open a specific number of hours weekly. We should not be making it harder for small, rural, all volunteer libraries to operate in Maine. Knowledge is power. (Thanks to Elisabeth for this lead.)
(The Library Commission, a 17-member board appointed by the Governor, is broadly representative of the state’s library community. The Commission establishes the policies and operations of the State Library, gives advice and makes recommendations on the expenditure of state and federal funds, and establishes guidelines and policies for statewide library programs.)

More Actions Today if You Have the Bandwidth

The Department of Homeland Security is trying to purge new Mainers—and naturalized citizens everywhere– from voter rolls by creating a “citizenship” check system that could wrongfully keep eligible citizens from voting. They are doing this by using (abusing) private voter data that the Trump administration culled from Social Security files—in flagrant violation of the Privacy Act. DHS is taking public comments on this effort until Dec. 1. Go here  to submit your comment. For a Sample Script go to the end of this email. (You can submit anonymously)

Ask Representatives Pingree and Golden to support the No Unauthorized Force in Venezuela Act bill presented by Seth Moulton and others.

(She can no longer sign it, but she can veto it.)Go here to email or call her at (207) 287-3531.   Remember in Nazi Germany, and in many other fascist government take overs, action starts with scapegoating a perceived “outside” group of people such as Immigrants, Jews, Roma, Buddhists, etc.

Res 90  which directs the “cessation of US military involvement in any non-congressionally authorized hostilities with Venezuela.” Both of Maine’s Senators voting against the resolution. Our lawmakers should be demanding an investigation of these murders NOW, as well as a say in stopping a war with Venezuela!! Libraries are the mainstays of democracy. The first thing dictators do when taking over a country is close all the libraries, because libraries are full of ideas and differences of opinion, all the things we say we want in a free and open society. So keep ’em, fund ’em, embrace and cherish ’em. — David Baldacci
