  • BCCA Action Items- Friday, 2/6/26

    Dates to keep in mind:

    February 17th: National Day of Lobbying to Impeach Trump, organized by 50501. This is intended to be in-district lobbying, but I will be surprised if it isn’t supported by protests all over.  https://www.mobilize.us/50501missouri-1/c/dday/event/create/

    March 28th: The next national No Kings protest.

    Action Items to choose from (or do all of them: your choice!), as always, in no particular order. Scroll down to the matching number of your option:

    1. Demand an investigation of the seizure of Georgia 2020 ballots by the FBI and the Director of National Intelligence
    2. De-fund/Abolish ICE
    3. Support S. 2746, the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act
    4. Continue to Boycott Target and contact them directly
    5. Help get detainees released
    6. Four Maine-specific actions

    Actions

    1) Demand an investigation of the seizure of Georgia 2020 ballots by the FBI and the Director of National Intelligence:

         Rather than me attempting to summarize, just read this this article. It’s longish but actually a fun read (I found it kind of fun, anyway), and it’s full of talking points you can use when you contact Senators King and Collins and Representative Golden and demand that they push the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence to immediately open an investigation into the recent seizure of Fulton County, Georgia, 2020 ballots by the FBI and Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence. First of all, Gabbard had no business being there, and her explanation for her presence doesn’t add up. Second, well, read the article. If you email rather than (or in addition to) calling, share this article directly, even if you have to copy and paste the whole thing (if their online forms will let you). I’m no lawyer, but it looks like there’s some interesting points here that could all too easily be overshadowed by the Minneapolis/ICE situation. As I said, read it yourself and see what you think.

         If you have the energy and interest, you could also contact the heads of both Intelligence committees:

         Senate Select Committee on Intelligence:

           Chair: Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR)

                         (202) 224-2353

    https://www.cotton.senate.gov/contact/contact-tom

                  Vice Chair: Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA)

    (202) 224-2023 https://www.warner.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=ContactPage

                 House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence:

                  Chair: Rep. Rick Crawford (R-AR-1)

                               (202) 225-4076

    https://crawford.house.gov/contact

                  Vice Chair: Rep. Trent Kelly (R-MS-1)

                               (202) 225-4306

                               No email option except for constituents.

    2) Defund ICE:

         Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries seem to be doing their usual thing of falling back to their usual weak stances while calling it “bi-partisanship.” (That’s Jared Golden’s playbook, too.) Their proposed reforms are little more than asking ICE to observe minimum standards of conduct that apply to every law enforcement agency in America. We need to see real reform. The alternative is for us all to live in a country where an uncontrolled paramilitary roams the streets, executing people who are not threatening them, shooting, punching, pepper-spraying and tear-gassing people directly in the face just for exercising their Constitutional right to speak out and bear witness. (Remember the guy who boasted in a text about getting 7 bullet holes with 5 bullets? Or the guy who said, “It’s like Call of Duty!” and was answered by something like, “So cool!”) We need a well-trained, controlled force that does due diligence in identifying and locating illegal aliens who have criminal records or are arrested committing a crime, not these “ICEholes” (I didn’t make that up; I saw it on a protest sign) who are over-armed and under-trained, and who think they are playing army on an Xbox. And who have no clue how to operate inside a city full of innocent bystanders, no idea (or interest in) how to de-escalate tensions, and are too wired and scared to hold back their own violent reactions.

         Contact Susan Collins and Angus King and thank them both for voting in favor of the Sanders Amendment which clawed back $75 Billion of the money allocated to ICE and CBP in the “One Big Beautiful Sadistic Bill,” and also thank Senator King for cosponsoring Mark Kelly’s S. 3683, the Stop Excessive Force in Immigration Act of 2026.

    Tell them both that more is needed:

    • There should be no votes on any DHS funding unless and until the White House commits to removing ICE and CBP forces from our communities and Congress conducts a full investigation into enforcement practices, use of force, and civil rights violations.
    • The entire $170 Billion slush fund that was approved for ICE and CBP in that bill should be stripped out, and ICE and CBP must be defunded until they meet standards of conduct for police professionals (including uncovered faces, body cams, identification badges, and an end to the detention and deportation of American citizens and immigrants who are in the U.S. lawfully.
    • Stop enforcement at sensitive locations, including hospitals, schools, houses of worship, and community service sites — a critical issue for service providers, faith-based organizations, and community networks.
    • End family and child detention and prohibit any new contracts with private detention companies.
    • Stop immigration enforcement based on racial profiling or any discriminatory targeting.
    • Stop warrantless arrests.
    • Ensure accountability for abuses by federal officers and end qualified immunity.
        Contact Jared Golden and lay out the same demands for him.
      Some other resources for countering ICE:

    3) Support S. 2746, the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act:

         Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee (that oversees US banking) has been demanding access to Epstein’s finances. To this end, he introduced S. 2746 (the Produce Epstein Treasury Records Act), which would require the Secretary of the Treasury to produce suspicious activity reports relating to Jeffrey Epstein and his associates. Republicans are currently blocking this bill.

         Call Senators King and Collins to urge them to cosponsor S. 2746. Also remind them that the list of impeachable offenses that Trump has committed in the first year of his second term is long and clear. It is way past time for Susan Collins to stop supporting Trump, and for Angus King to consider being a little less careful/reasonable.

    4) Continue to Boycott Target and contact them directly:

         Target has officially sent the police to clear peaceful protestors out of its stores in MN. These protestors were doing sit-ins to demand that Target stop being complicit with ICE. Call 800-440-0680 or email them at guest.service@target.com to tell them to stop collaborating with or supporting ICE and CBP in any way.

    5) Help get detainees released:

         Two organizations, Nefesh and CLUE, have created a fund to secure the release of Los Angeles community members from immigration detention. This campaign is an opportunity to unite families and free innocent people from ICE detention facilities in the LA area.

         CLUE’s Immigrant Detention Bond Fund is the largest fund of its kind in the country. They have been able to get over 100 people released in the past six months. One hundred percent of donations go directly to bonds (minus credit card fees, if that’s how you choose to give). Even better, after each case is resolved, the bond money is returned to CLUE’s fund. That means your donation will go on helping more detained individuals.

    Maine-specific actions:

    • See the national DeICE-ing action above
    • Learn how to counter Christian Nationalism (from the Washington County Dems)
      If you have studied Christian Nationalism at all, you already know it is a threat to democracy and our way of life. It is the philosophical underpinning of Project 2025, whose founders and followers are actively attempting to destroy freedom of religion in our country. If you are interested in learning how to join the fight against it, you can attend a workshop on Countering Christian Nationalism at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ellsworth on Sunday, Feb. 8th, from noon to 1:30pm. Led by members from Multifaith Justice Maine (part of the Maine People’s Alliance), this workshop will consist of two parts: 1) learning about Christian Nationalism, its moral and spiritual framing, political impact, and its support of authoritarianism; and 2) discussing how to implement counter-framing as a multifaith community and use nonviolent civil resistance as a countermeasure.
    • Help keep the Maine State House of Representatives blue (from the Washington County Democrats)
           The Dems hold the Majority of the state House by a very slim margin. On February 24th, there will be a special election for the Maine House District 94 seat, which was recently vacated by a Democrat. Now Democrat Scott Harriman is running for that seat against a MAGA Barbie-type Republican, and he’ll need all the help he can get to defeat her. (I wonder sometimes how many of these MAGA women are natural blondes…but that is neither here nor there.) Do what you can to support his campaign:
      — Send a donation up to $500 to: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/scott-harriman-1
      — Join a canvassing effort on a Saturday morning: 2/7, 2/14 or 2/21.  To join, sign up here: https://www.mobilize.us/mainedems/event/877498/
      — Join a phone bank on a Monday evening 2/9, 2/1, or 2/23.  Sign up here: https://www.mobilize.us/mainedems/event/886901/
    • Push Maine to pass into law a detention camp profits tax in our state:
           Many of DHS’s detention camps are run by private companies paid by taxpayer dollars. For example, CoreCivic has signed contracts to run detention facilities worth over $680 million in taxpayer dollars since last January. They reported $538 million in revenue in the second quarter of 2025. Over the same period, GEO Group made $632 million. So, while the government has claimed it can’t afford to make sure health insurance and childcare affordable to everyone, it has paid more than $1B of our money for detention centers that are no better than concentration camps. And CEOs and shareholders are getting richer than ever from taxpayer dollars.
           States can tax corporations doing business within our borders. In California, lawmakers have proposed AB 1633, a bill to aggressively tax the profits of privately-run detention centers and redirect those revenues to immigration-related services.
           Contact Governor Janet Mills and your representatives in the Maine State Senate and House of Representatives and urge them to introduce a detention camp profits tax in Maine. CEOs and shareholders can’t be allowed to get rich off the taxpayers by locking up our friends and neighbors.

    Reminder: When you call vs when you email via our reps’ websites (best way to contact them in writing), don’t forget to begin with: “Hi, my name is [name] and I’m a constituent calling from [zip code]. That is important, because if they don’t know you’re actually a constituent, your opinion will be ignored.

    Bangor councilors kill proposal to eliminate equity and inclusion committee

    From the Bangor Daily News:
    Bangor city councilors voted not to move forward with a proposal to eliminate the Advisory Committee on Racial Equity, Inclusion, and Human Rights in a Government Operations Committee meeting Monday night.

    The decision follows what councilors described as a flood of emails this weekend from community members who opposed the committee’s elimination. City Councilor Susan Faloon estimated she received between 75 and 100 emails since the agenda was released Friday from community members urging councilors not to disband the committee.

    NEXT NO KINGS PROTEST
    MARCH 28, 2026

    In 2025, millions of Americans came together in nonviolent protest to oppose the growing authoritarian actions of the Trump administration and affirm that this nation belongs to its people, not to kings. Since then, people have continued to rise up nonviolently against the Trump administration’s ongoing brutality and abuses of power, including the latest escalation in Minnesota. The No Kings Coalition is activating an immediate and ongoing nationwide digital organizing effort leading up to our next mass mobilization on March 28, including a flagship event in the Twin Cities.

    Indivisible Bangor is actively working on these plans, so stay tuned!

    Other News:

    A new PAC called American Sovereignty has produced two propaganda commercials that distort, mislead, and lie about ICE and what they are doing. One of these commercials has been seen on MS Now (formerly MSNBC). The Daily Kos has an article about it here: “Shady new ad campaign paints ICE thugs as ‘friends and neighbors’ (2/2/26).” The article states that they are running in states with “crucial Senate elections this year,” and Maine is certainly one of those states.

    These commercials, along with the “win” that has been assigned to Senator Collins for getting the ICE “surge” to end in Maine, are all part of the effort to get her re-elected this November. We won’t let that happen. Write letters to the editors of your newspapers (go here for more info), keep reminding your friends what Senator Collins has done to hurt her fellow Mainers, volunteer or donate (or both!) to a campaign for her Democratic opposition.

    If anyone is fooled by these commercials, they need only read about the recent Capitol Hill forum sponsored by Rep. Robert Garcia (D-California) and other Democrats, which was not attended by any Republicans. Marimar Martinez and Aliya Rahman, both Americans who were brutalized by ICE agents, with Ms. Martinez actually being shot five times, testified, along with Luke and Brent Ganger, the brothers of Renée Good.

    Renée Good’s brothers, others describe assaults, shootings at hearing (2/3/26) Gift article from the Washington Post.

    See some of the testimony from MS NOW on YouTube here. It is shocking and horrific.

    BLACK HISTORY MONTH

    In celebration of Black History Month, we will be sharing local Black History and Black Community resources throughout the month.

    Atlantic Black Box, based in Portland, Maine, empowers communities throughout the Northeast to take up the critical work of researching and reckoning with our region’s role in colonization, the slave trade, and the global economy of enslavement. This grassroots historical recovery movement is powered by community historians and guided by a broad coalition of scholars, community leaders, educators, archivists, museum professionals, antiracism activists, and artists.

    Emanuel’s Daily Call to Action:

    Action Thursday February 5th: For the Heart Thursday + Help Scott Harriman Get Elected in Lewiston Special Election

    Good Morning Folks, it’s a For the Heart Thursday. I am always torn about whether this day should have any recommended action at all.  For now I will suggest one – but the idea is that it is a middle-of-the-week pause to be compassionate with yourself! Make sure to do something that sustains you today.

    Top Action to Take Today:

    As Hancock County points out in Action 207, “Keep Maine Blue”, post (attached) there is a special election in Lewiston coming up February 24. Democrat Scott Harriman is running for the House.  His campaign needs donations, time, and energy to beat a challenging MAGA-aligned candidate. Find out more about Scott hereand here (Maine Beacon Article).  You can help by making a donation, joining a canvassing effort on a Saturday morning: 2/7, 2/14 or 2/21, and joining a phone bank on a Monday evening 2/9, 2/1, or 2/23. The balance of power in Maine is very close in the House – Dems 74, Republicans 72, Independents 3.

    With great appreciation for all the engagement everywhere!

    More Actions Today if You Have the Bandwidth

    For the Heart

    For Your Heart this seventh week of Winter:

    Things not going our way is a given. What we do when life doesn’t go our way is what is important.

    ~~~Nancy Hathaway  Center for Studying Mindfulness
    A Note Life is the only wayTo get covered in leaves,Catch your breath on the sand,Rise on wings;to be a dog,or stroke its warm fur;to tell painfrom everything it’s not;to squeeze inside events,dawdle in views,to seek the least of all possible mistakes.An extraordinary chanceTo remember for a momentA conversation heldWith the lamp switched off;And if only onceTo stumble on a stone,End up drenched in one downpour or another,Mislay your keys in the grass;And to follow a spark on the wind with your eyes;And to keep on not knowingSomething important.
     – Wislawa Szymborska
    More Actions Today if You Have the BandwidthCall/write Senators King and Collins to support extending the ACA tax credits as the House did on January 8th.  The House’s version is a “clean” extension with no amendments.  The Maine People’s Alliance makes this really easy, go here. If you wish to write your own note or call, our Senator’s  contact information is below in the Contact Information part of this email. For more information go to 5calls.orgFor a full toolkit on how to support this action  go here
    If you have done the above, let’s make contact with our Congressional Representatives to ask them to oppose the “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) This act would require voter ID, ban mail in ballots, and use the Republican lies about widespread fraud in elections to allow the Federal Government to supersede state’s rights in voting procedures. Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact. (“Proving Voter Fraud” is what the Federal raid on Fulton County Ballots with Tulsi Gabard?? in the lead,  from 2020 is all about.)
    ICE related Actions Contact our Congressional Representatives to: Claw back the 175 BILLION dollar slush fund that was approved in the “OBBA”(The Budget Bill Passed this Summer), for Immigration enforcement actions over the next four years. Collins + King both voted in favor of the Sanders Amendment which clawed back 75 Billion from ICE and CBP. Thank them for this, and then ask them to clawback this funding, and defund ICE and CBP until they meet standards of conduct for police professionals, including but not limited to: no masks, body cams, identification badges, and an end to the detention and deportation of citizens who are lawfully present immigrants. For more information and a script go to 5calls.org for defunding ICE, and here for the 175 Billion Dollar Clawback. They will be voting next week on this – February 13th.
    On Jan. 29, at 1 pm
     the Maine legislature’s Judiciary Committee held a public hearing on an emergency bill, LD 2106 “An Act to Prohibit the Disclosure of Nonpublic Records Without Proper Judicial Review” to make sure ICE can’t enter private spaces in hospitals, schools, and childcare centers (learn more here ).  MPA has an ACTION TOOLKIT on this bill here.  You can still submit testimony on this bill here.
    Maine’s Attorney General Aaron Frey has started an ICE tip-line Citizens are urged to report intimidating and excessive federal enforcement behavior to CitizenReporting.OAG@maine.gov. “
    Emailers should be advised that any content sent may be subject to public dissemination under Maine’s Freedom of Access Laws.”
    On January 14th, Governor Mills issued a statement concerning ICE activity here in Maine.  Click here to see her statement on Vimeo.
    Bruce Springsteen just released the Streets of Minneapolis – exactly what we need to keep our momentum building!
    If you are considering activating in regards to the ICE + CBP presence here in Maine, Cumberland County Indivisible has sent a great list of things to be aware of in their last email blast.  I have attached it to today’s email.The Maine Immigrant’s  Rights Coalition has set up a resource hub on responding to ICE.  If you see what you identify as an ICE vehicle in your town call the ICE Watch hotline in Maine:207 544 9989. You can also text them a photo of what you believe to be an ICE vehicle, or any ICE actions in your area.
    Call or write King, Collins, Golden or Pingree and ask them to speak out about the  deployment of violent ICE agents to American cities and states and now in Maine. They are terrorizing our people, and not in any way making our country safer. Demand a full investigation of ICE killings, refuse to pass extra appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security which funds ICE, and call for the Impeachment of Kristi (Cowboy Hat) Noem.  For more information and a script for your call go to 5calls.org.
    There are now 140 co-sponsors of a bill to impeach Krist Noem, Head of the Department of Homeland Security.
    Activate Maine has an ICE toolkit including links to sign up for ICE verifier and de escalation trainings.If you want to get more involved check out
    Emanuel’s Daily Action Email, Wednesday, 2/4/26 – Full Text
    Action Wednesday February 4th: Contact Our Congresspeople to Defund ICE/CBP + Clawback 175 Billion Dollars From DHS Ongoing Funding
    Good Morning Folks, it’s the middle of our first week in February, and the House passed a funding package that includes only 2 weeks of funding for the Department of Homeland Security. We have an opportunity to register our anger and dismay with the behavior of ICE + Border Patrol by reducing their funding and adding guardrails to their operation.
    Top Action to Take Today:
    Contact our Congressional Representatives to: Claw back the 175 BILLION dollar slush fund
     that was approved in the “OBBA”(The Budget Bill Passed this Summer), for Immigration enforcement actions over the next four years. Collins + King both voted in favor of the Sanders Amendment which clawed back 75 Billion from ICE and CBP. Thank them for this, and then ask them to clawback this funding, and defund ICE and CBP
     until they meet standards of conduct for police professionals, including but not limited to: no masks, body cams, identification badges, and an end to the detention and deportation of citizens who are lawfully present immigrants. For more information and a script go to 5calls.org for defunding ICE, and here for the 175 Billion Dollar Clawback. They will be voting next week on this – February 13th.
    More Actions Today if You Have the BandwidthCall/write Senators King and Collins to support extending the ACA tax credits as the House did on January 8th.  The House’s version is a “clean” extension with no amendments.  The Maine People’s Alliance makes this really easy, go here. If you wish to write your own note or call, our Senator’s  contact information is below in the Contact Information part of this email. For more information go to 5calls.orgFor a full toolkit on how to support this action  go here
    If you have done the above, let’s make contact with our Congressional Representatives to ask them to oppose the “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) This act would require voter ID, ban mail in ballots, and use the Republican lies about widespread fraud in elections to allow the Federal Government to supersede state’s rights in voting procedures. Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact. (“Proving Voter Fraud” is what the Federal raid on Fulton County Ballots with Tulsi Gabard?? in the lead,  from 2020 is all about.)
    ICE related ActionsOn Jan. 29, at 1 pm the Maine legislature’s Judiciary Committee held a public hearing on an emergency bill, LD 2106 “An Act to Prohibit the Disclosure of Nonpublic Records Without Proper Judicial Review” to make sure ICE can’t enter private spaces in hospitals, schools, and childcare centers (learn more here ).  MPA has an ACTION TOOLKIT on this bill here.  You can still submit testimony on this bill here.
    Maine’s Attorney General Aaron Frey has started an ICE tip-line Citizens are urged to report intimidating and excessive federal enforcement behavior to CitizenReporting.OAG@maine.gov. “
    Emailers should be advised that any content sent may be subject to public dissemination under Maine’s Freedom of Access Laws.”
    On January 14th, Governor Mills issued a statement concerning ICE activity here in Maine.  Click here to see her statement on Vimeo.
    Bruce Springsteen just released the Streets of Minneapolis – exactly what we need to keep our momentum building!
    If you are considering activating in regards to the ICE + CBP presence here in Maine, Cumberland County Indivisible has sent a great list of things to be aware of in their last email blast.  I have attached it to today’s email.The Maine Immigrant’s  Rights Coalition has set up a resource hub on responding to ICE.  If you see what you identify as an ICE vehicle in your town call the ICE Watch hotline in Maine:207 544 9989. You can also text them a photo of what you believe to be an ICE vehicle, or any ICE actions in your area.
    Call or write King, Collins, Golden or Pingree and ask them to speak out about the  deployment of violent ICE agents to American cities and states and now in Maine. They are terrorizing our people, and not in any way making our country safer. Demand a full investigation of ICE killings, refuse to pass extra appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security which funds ICE, and call for the Impeachment of Kristi (Cowboy Hat) Noem.  For more information and a script for your call go to 5calls.org.
    There are now 140 co-sponsors of a bill to impeach Krist Noem, Head of the Department of Homeland Security.
    More Actions Today if You Have the BandwidthThis week the House will be voting on H.R. 7148 , the funding package without DHS included.Contact Representatives Pingree and Golden to ask them to approve this package with funding for DHS to be acted on separately.If you have done the above, let’s take contact our Congressional Representatives to ask them to oppose the “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) This act would require voter ID, ban mail in ballots, and use the Republican lies about widespread fraud in elections to allow the Federal Government to supersede state’s rights in voting procedures. Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact. (“Proving Voter Fraud” is what the Federal raid on Fulton County Ballots with Tulsi Gabard?? in the lead,  from 2020 is all about.)
    ICE related ActionsOn Jan. 29, at 1 pm the Maine legislature’s Judiciary Committee held a public hearing on an emergency bill, LD 2106 “An Act to Prohibit the Disclosure of Nonpublic Records Without Proper Judicial Review” to make sure ICE can’t enter private spaces in hospitals, schools, and childcare centers (learn more here ).  MPA has an ACTION TOOLKIT on this bill here.  You can still submit testimony on this bill here.
    Maine’s Attorney General Aaron Frey has started an ICE tip-line Citizens are urged to report intimidating and excessive federal enforcement behavior to CitizenReporting.OAG@maine.gov. “
    If you are considering activating in regards to the ICE + CBP presence here in Maine, Cumberland County Indivisible has sent a great list of things to be aware of in their last email blast.  I have attached it to today’s email.The Maine Immigrant’s  Rights Coalition has set up a resource hub on responding to ICE.  Think about what your risk tolerance is and then activate – you could get ICE verifier and de-escalation training, you could support NO Mask in Maine legislation, you could help your local organizers bring food to families who are not leaving home right now, and, offer to take their kids to school. Lots of resources below. If you see what you identify as an ICE vehicle in your town call the ICE Watch hotline in Maine:207 544 9989. You can also text them a photo of what you believe to be an ICE vehicle, or any ICE actions in your area.
    Call or write King, Collins, Golden or Pingree and ask them to speak out about the  deployment of violent ICE agents to American cities and states and now in Maine. They are terrorizing our people, and not in any way making our country safer. Demand a full investigation of ICE killings, refuse to pass extra appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security which funds ICE, and call for the Impeachment of Kristi (Cowboy Hat) Noem.  For more information and a script for your call go to 5calls.org.
    There are now 140 co-sponsors of a bill to impeach Krist Noem, Head of the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Action 207 – Keep Maine Blue!
    A message from the Hancock Country Democrats (2/4):
    Background:  Right now, the balance in the State House in Augusta is 74 Democrats – 72 Republicans – 3 Independents. How on earth did that happen?  This is WAY too close for comfort!  If they gain parity, or heaven forbid take the majority, the Republicans will torpedo all the bills we care about.
    There is a special election in Lewiston coming up February 24.  Democrat Scott Harriman is running for the House.  His campaign needs donations, time, and energy to beat a challenging MAGA-aligned candidate that would hamstring Democratic efforts in Augusta.  (She’s a blonde of the type that Trump obviously likes, and that’s absolutely what the people of Lewiston DON’T need “representing” them in Augusta.)
  • Action 206 – Coming Up Feb 8
    A message from the Hancock Country Democrats (2/3):
    Background:  If you have studied Christian Nationalism for years, you would already know it is a threat to democracy and our way of life. (1)   It is the philosophical underpinning of Project 2025 (2) and indeed has its origins way, way back (11th-13th century) in the Crusades (3) and the brutal Spanish Inquisition (4).  If you thought the Enlightenment had abolished once and for all the backward ideology of Christian Nationalism, you are sadly mistaken. Like a science fiction monster, it is “undead” and actively threatens the freedoms of all civilized Americans (5).  As Steven Weinberg famously said, “With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil – that takes religion.”
    Action:  Be informed.  Take this threat seriously.  Here’s a meeting to consider attending:
    Actions
    1) Support taking DHS funding out of the package voting for funding everything else:
         This week the House will be voting on H.R. 7148, the funding package without DHS included. Contact Representative Golden to urge him to approve this package with funding for DHS to be acted on separately. Pressure him to stand tough on the DHS funding: NO further funding for DHS should be allowed without serious changes to control the lawless way ICE and CBP have been operating in U.S. cities. Yes, FEMA and the Coast Guard, etc., will be affected, but this is too important to compromise on.
    2) Oppose the MEGA (Make Elections Great Again) Act and the Save America Act (a more extreme version of the SAVE Act:
           Last week, House Republicans introduced yet another bill that would restrict voting access while claiming to address election fraud—a problem that doesn’t actually exist. The Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act, similar to the previously House-passed SAVE Act, would require proof of citizenship for voter registration and mandate photo ID at the polls. Millions of Americans—especially people with disabilities, young voters, and Black and Hispanic communities—don’t possess the documents these requirements would demand. Married women who took their husband’s last names would have serious problems due to their birth certificates (if they have them) not matching the name on their more current IDs, such as driver’s licenses and passports.
         By mandating extensive changes such as requiring states to reject mail-in ballots that arrive after polls close on election day, eliminating universal vote-by-mail programs, and banning ranked-choice voting in federal elections this legislation would also override the states’ constitutionally-granted power to run elections.
         Despite the GOP’s repeated false assertions, election fraud in the United States is extremely rare. The real danger to democratic elections comes from Republican efforts to erode public trust in election security and suppress voter turnout ahead of this fall’s midterm elections.
         Contact Representative Golden to tell him that you are still disappointed in him for voting in favor of the SAVE Act and demand that he reject the MEGA Act and the new Save America Act, as well as all the deceptive misinformation about election fraud and interference.
    3) Fight for the ACA Premium Tax Credit extension:
        Now that the ACA premium tax credits have expired, households across the country are drowning in healthcare bills. Taking away affordable healthcare from Americans in order to pay for tax breaks for billionaires is unacceptable. Without these tax credits, millions of Americans are being forced to choose between feeding their families and having healthcare.
       Contact Senators King and Collins to urge them to pass the ACA Premium Tax Credit extensions.
    4) Oppose the targeting of journalists by the Trump administration:
        Controlling journalists is a clear part of the fascist playbook. We can’t allow that to happen here. Contact Senators King and Collins to demand that the denounce these partisan targeting of journalist who are doing nothing but investigating and reporting that is completely allowed by the First Amendment. Our Senators need to stand up to protect the First Amendment and the independence of the press.
    5) Get ALL the Epstein files out ASAP and prioritize protecting the victims:
          It is unbelievable that the DOJ still hasn’t released all the Epstein files as required by the  Epstein Files Transparency Act. Plus, last week’s tranche of files not only didn’t protect the victims, but also listed some of their full names and showed photos of them as young girls. Isn’t that a crime? Pam Bondi needs to be fired and brought up on charges for what lawyers are calling “the single most egregious violation of victim privacy in one day in United States history.” I’m sure there are plenty of other charges that could be brought against her for her weaponization of the DOJ in service to Donald Trump.
         Contact Representative Golden and remind him to support Congressmen Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie in filing inherent contempt charges against Pam Bondi and/or any other tack they might take to enforce the Epstein Transparency Law that Bondi is clearly ignoring.
    6) Put a candle in your window:
       This is an easy one. There’s a new campaign called We Are the Light. Simply put a candle in your window to shine a light amidst the darkness. Place candles in your windows every night until the assault on our freedom ends, to remind one another that we are not alone.
    7) Keep looking for ways to stop enabling/supporting companies that are not in line with our values:
         Here’s a new website that lists and explains all the corporations that are directly enabling the Trump administration’s nasty policies and/or helping ICE and CBP: https://www.resistandunsubscribe.com/ I know it’s hard to turn away from a lot of these big services so many of us rely on all the time, so my suggestion is to look at your options and start by boycotting those whose nonuse won’t make life too difficult for you.
    Following this newsletter is today’s Emanuel’s Daily Action Email from Augusta – the daily action along with a link to his great list of important actions and information. Today’s Top Action repeats the request that we call our representatives in the House to tell them to approve the senate package with DHS funding stripped from it when it arrives today and to also ask them to oppose the “MEGA” (Make Elections Great Again) bill.
    Three new actions from Hancock County Democrats:
    Action 203: Your party needs you! (1/31)
    Action 204. Protect the Vote (1/31)
    Action 205 Maine Legislation 2/2 – 2/6 (1/31)
    More Hancock County Democrats actions are found here.
    Also, a new action from the Bold Coast Civic Alliance, (1/29) on discussing denying funding for ICE, impeaching Pam Bondi, and other items.
    A lot of research goes into these additional actions, so be sure to read them!
    And THANK YOU to supporters who have been donating to our ActBlue fund! Planning events and maintaining the website and email list take money, so these donations are appreciated!
    IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
    AND URGENT ACTION
    TODAY
    Monday 2/2/2026
    From the MPA: The Bangor City Council has shared that they intend to review an ordinance at the GovOps meeting TODAY, MONDAY, 2/2 at 5:30 to officially DISBAND the Bangor City Council Advisory Committee on Racial Equity, Inclusion, and Human Rights (ACREIHR).
    We need to FLOOD them with emails in support of the committee and their work, and against this dangerous ordinance and what it could mean for our community. Even if you don’t live in Bangor, please send an email and share with those you know. Bangor is the largest city in our region and if the council pursues this disbandment it will have repercussions in our surrounding communities too.
    BELOW IS A LINK TO A PDF WITH TALKING POINTS. Sometimes we may lean towards anger – we need to not do that right now. Please review this as you write and share with others. We’re going to need everyone to defeat this because there’s no guarantee it would fail in Council.
    Email Recommendations In Support of ACRE to City Council – PDF download from a Proton drive.
    The list of the nine Bangor City Councilors is here. THANK YOU!
    NEXT NO KINGS PROTEST
    MARCH 28, 2026
    In 2025, millions of Americans came together in nonviolent protest to oppose the growing authoritarian actions of the Trump administration and affirm that this nation belongs to its people, not to kings. Since then, people have continued to rise up nonviolently against the Trump administration’s ongoing brutality and abuses of power, including the latest escalation in Minnesota.     BLACK HISTORY MONTH
    In celebration of Black History Month, we will be sharing local Black History and Black Community resources throughout the month.
    Atlantic Black Box, based in Portland, Maine, empowers communities throughout the Northeast to take up the critical work of researching and reckoning with our region’s role in colonization, the slave trade, and the global economy of enslavement. This grassroots historical recovery movement is powered by community historians and guided by a broad coalition of scholars, community leaders, educators, archivists, museum professionals, antiracism activists, and artists.
    Emanuel’s Daily Call to Action:
    Action Monday February 2nd: Ask Pingree and Golden to Support HR 7148 – Federal Funding Package + Ask Them + Our Senators to Oppose “Make Elections Great Again” MEGA
    Good Morning Folks, it’s Groundhog Day and our first Monday in February. A big win in Texas where a Democrat beat the Republican by 14 points in a state Senate race in a district Trump won by 17 points! It’s been 50 years since a Democrat won that district.
    Top Action to Take Today:
    This week the House will be voting on H.R. 7148 , the funding package without DHS included.Contact Representatives Pingree and Golden to ask them to approve this package with funding for DHS to be acted on separately.
    If you have done the above, let’s take contact our Congressional Representatives to ask them to oppose the “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) This act would require voter ID, ban mail in ballots, and use the Republican lies about widespread fraud in elections to allow the Federal Government to supersede state’s rights in voting procedures. Go to 5calls.org for more information and a script for this call/contact. (“Proving Voter Fraud” is what the Federal raid on Fulton County Ballots with Tulsi Gabard?? in the lead, from 2020 is all about.)
    ICE related Actions On Jan. 29, at 1 pm the Maine legislature’s Judiciary Committee held a public hearing on an emergency bill, LD 2106 “An Act to Prohibit the Disclosure of Nonpublic Records Without Proper Judicial Review” to make sure ICE can’t enter private spaces in hospitals, schools, and childcare centers (learn more here ).  MPA has an ACTION TOOLKIT on this bill here.  You can still submit testimony on this bill here.
    Maine’s Attorney General Aaron Frey has started an ICE tip-line Citizens are urged to report intimidating and excessive federal enforcement behavior to CitizenReporting.OAG@maine.gov. “
    Emailers should be advised that any content sent may be subject to public dissemination under Maine’s Freedom of Access Laws.”
    On January 14th, Governor Mills issued a statement concerning ICE activity here in Maine.  Click here to see her statement on Vimeo.
    Bruce Springsteen just released the Streets of Minneapolis – exactly what we need to keep our momentum building!
    If you are considering activating in regards to the ICE + CBP presence here in Maine, Cumberland County Indivisible has sent a great list of things to be aware of in their last email blast.  I have attached it to today’s email.The Maine Immigrant’s  Rights Coalition has set up a resource hub on responding to ICE.  Think about what your risk tolerance is and then activate – you could get ICE verifier and de-escalation training, you could support NO Mask in Maine legislation, you could help your local organizers bring food to families who are not leaving home right now, and, offer to take their kids to school. Lots of resources below. If you see what you identify as an ICE vehicle in your town call the ICE Watch hotline in Maine:207 544 9989. You can also text them a photo of what you believe to be an ICE vehicle, or any ICE actions in your area.
    Call or write King, Collins, Golden or Pingree and ask them to speak out about the  deployment of violent ICE agents to American cities and states and now in Maine. They are terrorizing our people, and not in any way making our country safer. Demand a full investigation of ICE killings, refuse to pass extra appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security which funds ICE, and call for the Impeachment of Kristi (Cowboy Hat) Noem.  For more information and a script for your call go to 5calls.org.
    There are now 140 co-sponsors of a bill to impeach Krist Noem, Head of the Department of Homeland Security.
    Activate Maine has an ICE toolkit including links to sign up for ICE verifier and de escalation trainings.If you want to get more involved check out this training manual for becoming an ICE verifier.
    ACA Related Actions
    Call Collins and King and ask them to support the ACA tax extension bill coming from the House with no amendments. This bill has stalled in the Senate because Republicans want to add an abortion amendment.  For more information on the ACA go hereFor a full toolkit on how to support action on this go here. This bill passed in the house!!
    If you have a story about how the ACA tax extension health care cuts will affect you directly or someone you know please contact Esther at the MPA. Personal stories matter!Boycott: Being a consumer is one of the greatest powers we have as members of a capitalist economy. There are numerous boycotts going on, some of which we have listed below –  pressure on companies can work – as noted above Spotify is not running ICE recruitment ads, and Avelo is not running deportation flights.  For a complete list of ICE related boycotts go to Icelist. This link is currently dead because people think the Russians took down this site after a whistleblower released the names of 4500 immigration law enforcement personnel. For the full story go here. Another resource on Boycotting – Scott Galloway’s podcast – Raging Moderates, discusses boycotting TechBro products at about 14:30 into the podcast, go here. (thank you Wendilee for this)
    Mutual Aid
    ActivateMaine has created a site, SNAP Into Action: “a statewide effort to help those who are affected by the freezing of benefits due to the Government shut down.”  Even though the Government is “open” now, hunger issues continue for people around the country. Activate Maine also has a Mutual Aid page with lots of resources.
    Heating Assistance:  If you have friends, neighbors, or need support for Heating Assistance, Li Heap funds have been authorized for Maine, Click here to learn more about applying for LIHEAP assistance. Collins and King were  involved in pushing that this money get released after the Government shutdown.
    Insurance Crisis:  If the ACA tax cuts do not go through, tens of thousands of us will have to choose between health care premiums and food or rent.  If you have a personal story along these lines please contact Esther at the Maine People’s Alliance who is collecting personal testimony to support the passage of the ACA tax cuts. Call King and Collins to support the House bill just passed on the ACA tax extensions.
    ICE Related Mutual Aid: Both documented and undocumented immigrants are staying home in Maine, scared to leave the house to go shopping, bring their children to school, go to Dr’s appointments etc. You can help go here to find out how.
