Reminder: When you call vs when you email via our reps’ websites (best way to contact them in writing), don’t forget to begin with: “Hi, my name is [name] and I’m a constituent calling from [zip code]. That is important, because if they don’t know you’re actually a constituent, your opinion will be ignored.

    Actions

The House has been sent home for recess to avoid dealing with the whole Epstein thing (see the first Action Item, below). So call or visit Jared Golden’s local Maine offices to make your voice heard. Especially ask if he is going to hold any Town Halls in August. If he’s not, ask why not and stress that avoiding his constituents is no way to represent us.

    1. Keep the Epstein coverup front and center, since Trump is trying so hard to distract everyone from it:
      • Indivisible has an entire page devoted to this, including backstory, explanation of why it’s important, and actions we can take, with scripts. https://indivisible.org/epsteinfiles Be sure to check out the “Extra Credit” action at the end: I think we could all have some fun with that.
      • Also: Newsmax is apparently starting to refer to Ghislaine Maxwell as a “victim.” Don’t let them get away with this. She wasn’t convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison because she was a “victim.” She is a predator who engaged in human trafficking and abused minors. Our representatives in Congress should denounce this language and keep reminding the world that he only victims here were the young women Maxwell and Epstein took advantage of.
    2. Sign a Resistbot letter to oppose the backing off of HUD’s enforcement of fair housing laws:
      • Text SIGN PGEZML to 50409, or to @Resistbot on Apple Messages, Messenger, Instagram, or Telegram.
      • Or, if you prefer to customize the letter (which is a good idea but way more time consuming), type it up the way you want it, then use whatever app you use for text messages and start a message to 50409 (or “resistbot” on FB Messenger). In the message part, type the word “Resist” and follow the prompts. Be prepared to paste in your version of the letter.
    3. I know it all feels overwhelming, but we need to keep hammering on our lawmakers to finally do what we’ve been asking them to do. Don’t let them think we’ve forgotten and moved on to other concerns. Look back at previous Action Items emails to get more info on these and other issues:
      • Keep after our congresspeople to fight to rein in ICE’s uncontrolled terrorizing of citizens and non-citizens alike. People are being attacked, beaten, kidnapped, and detained in horrific conditions by masked, armed men—all without any kind of due process or even the slightest nod to the laws of our Constitution. This is nothing more than Trump and Project 2025 building their private police state. Needless to say, it has to be stopped. So does the huge investment into the building of more concentration camps like “Alligator Auschwitz.”
      • Push Senators King and Collins to oppose Emil Bove’s confirmation for a lifetime judgeship on the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals (for yet another article about why he shouldn’t be confirmed: https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5418602-senate-appeals-court-nominee-emil-bove/ )
      • Keep contacting our congresspeople to support clean energy. Six days ago, the Citizens’ Climate Lobby met with Congress to convince our lawmakers to act decisively—and soon—to ensure that America’s energy is affordable, reliable, and clean. Hopefully, their message moved at least some of our reps and got them to think smarter about this issue. We can help by reminding them. More info here: https://citizensclimatelobby.org/get-loud-take-action/capitol-hill-call-in/
      • Keep talking to people about the damage the Trump administration and the Republican Congress are doing to the lives of everyday Americans. Wear clothing that supports our message: both what we object to and what we stand for.
    4. Attend another protest on August 2nd.
      • On Saturday, August 2nd, the organization called 50501 (50 protests, 50 states,1 movement) is calling for a “Rise Against the Regime” national protest. To find one near you, go to https://events.pol-rev.com/
        • There will be one in Ellsworth, 4:30pm – 6pm. See picture at the bottom for more details.
    5. Contact Senators King and Collins and Rep. Golden to help save the hospital in Ellsworth.
      • Back on June 12th, four Democrat Senators wrote a letter to Trump, Mike Johnson, and John Thune outlining the negative effects the Big Bad Bill will have on rural hospitals across the country. That letter lists Maine Coast Memorial Hospital as one of 2 Maine hospitals in danger of closing (the other is Aroostook Medical Center). This is very bad news for a lot of us. The cuts to rural healthcare cannot be allowed to stand.
      •  Contact our congresspeople and tell them how closing MCMH will negatively impact you and your neighbors. Make your story as personal as possible. Tell them that money can’t be cut.
    6. Save Maine’s Absentee Ballot Voting.
      • In November, the Maine elections will include a referendum to further limit the ability of Mainers to vote by, among other things, severely limiting access to and use of absentee ballots. The finalized referendum reads as follows:
      • “Do you want to change Maine election laws to eliminate two days of absentee voting, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities, ban prepaid postage on absentee ballot return envelopes, limit the number of drop boxes, require voters to show certain photo ID before voting, and make other changes to our elections? ”You can read more about it here: https://saveabsentee.me/
    7. Help Activate Maine keep up their online calendar of resistance events.
      • Activate Maine desperately needs more volunteers to help with posting events on their statewide calendar, which is visited by over 10K people every month. Doing your part will only take a few minutes every day. When you volunteer, you’ll receive training. They’re making it as easy as possible. Sign up here: http://bit.ly/4m5mo8A

A lot to do, as is the case so often these days. 😢

    Hi Folks,

Good morning everyone, last week in July.

The House has been sent home to avoid dealing with the Epstein Files, and the Senate is probably around for a week or more. Recess is a good time to visit our Delegation’s Offices and discuss the issues most important to you.

Sign up to help oppose this fall’s voter suppression referendum in Maine go here to get involved in an effort sponsored by the Maine League of Women Voters, Maine Equal Justice, Maine ACLU, Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, Maine AFL-CIO and many others.

Call our Senators and ask them to oppose the nomination of Emil Bove, (Nosferatu 2) for the Federal Appeals Court (3d circuit). A vote should be coming up this week. Once there, Trump, can advance him to the Supreme Court. He is really bad news. Details and links below. Senator Susan Collins voted to advance Emil Bove’s nomination but stated she would oppose his confirmation on the final vote. She expressed concerns that Bove would not serve as an impartial jurist. King also voted to advance his nomination.

    TODAY’S ACTION (s)

    • Work with your resistance group to visit one of our Congress Member’s Offices During Summer Recess: Ask them to act on any number of issues, ask them to hold a town hall meeting, create a petition to present to them with signatures, you know what to do!
    • Call Senators King and Collins to oppose the nomination of Emile Bove to be a judge on the Federal Appeals court:  Bove was Trump’s lawyer in the hush money case, He ordered the firings of Jan. 6 prosecutors, threatened to purge the FBI and prosecute local and state officials who pushed back against Trump’s mass deportation agenda, and dropped the corruption charges against NYC mayor Eric Adams. Go to 5calls.org to get more talking points on this. Both Collins and King voted to move his nomination forward.

  • Action 153 Protect the VOTE

From our friends at Hancock County Democrats:

Realization #1: Given the enormous and outrageous quantity and variety of harms that are being perpetrated on the American public by this administration through its Project 2025 and Big Ugly Budget Bill, it’s almost impossible for any single person to keep up.  Therefore the most useful thing we can each do, is pick one battle in the fight to save democracy, and focus most of our energy on it.   For Maine voters, right now, this is probably the campaign to defeat the upcoming voter suppression referendum on the November 2025 ballot. More on that below.

Realization #2: This concentration of effort does not mean that we neglect making phone calls to our elected officials on other important issues, but it does mean that we become more efficient, picking a simple and reliable method of getting our voices heard.  Consider the following:

    • The “5 calls app” has a comprehensive and timely list of issues with background and suggested “scripts”.  It’s available for both apple (https://apps.apple.com/app/id1202558609) and android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.a5calls.android.a5calls&pli=1) and works on a phone or tablet. The focus is usually national.  Once you have decided to make a call, do not copy the suggested script verbatim – use your own words.  Also, make your call directly to the relevant office rather than clicking through the app. These procedures will increase your effectiveness.  Also, call your state representative and senator on the same issue.  Even if they aren’t voting on that issue, it’s important that they know where their constituents stand – especially if you are “represented” by a Republican!

Action: (Back to Realization #1) Let’s all volunteer at https://saveabsentee.me.  This website provides all the background you need *. We MUST increase voter turnout to defeat this harmful referendum. You may think “oh, there’s three months until we vote on this issue, no emergency”.  However, one of the most important things we can do now is to organize a local canvassing effort.  This takes a lot of advance planning, training and recruitment, and there is no time to waste.  While protecting our vote should be the “foot in the door” issue, we will find people eager to discuss the myriad other threats to our future. For example, many of our friends and neighbors may lose their MaineCare, northern and downeast Maine hospitals may be doomed, and the remaining facilities in southern Maine will be swamped.

Urgency:  Download the “5 Calls” app this week, and start a regular program.  Many have found tapping onto “5 Calls” along with their morning coffee, and allocating a half hour to making calls, is a good way to start every day.  To defeat the Maine referendum, Sign up at https://saveabsentee.me/how-to-get-involved/  and decide how you want to help the effort.  The perpetrators of the referendum are well funded and relentless in their perverse desire to make voting difficult for YOU.  Don’t let them get away with it.

    Extra credit:

*You can also dig through your archives or https://isledems.org/actionitems and find Action #8 which we sent in January.  Also Actions # 9, 24, 54, 77, 81, 88, 90.  The SAVE act hasn’t progressed through the Senate.  Instead, the right wingers are focused on state level voter suppression, like the Maine referendum.

About 200 people gathered on Stillwater Avenue near the Bangor Mall Thursday evening to rally against the Trump administration in honor of the late congressman and civil rights activist John Lewis.

The event was the latest in a series of nationwide protests broadly opposing President Donald Trump’s policies, with “Good Trouble Lives On” events planned in more than 1,500 locations across all 50 states, according to The Guardian

More than 20 Maine communities participated in Thursday’s protests. The Bangor event was organized by Indivisible Bangor, a progressive advocacy group that formed after the 2016 election to oppose Trump’s agenda. Indivisible has thousands of chapters across the country.

The protest aimed to embody Lewis’s appeal for Americans to get into “good trouble, necessary trouble,” in pursuit of social justice, according to organizer Mary Ann Larson.

“People are waking up,” Larson said, noting she was especially concerned about the recently passed budget reconciliation bill and what it will mean for rural Maine hospitals and people who rely on food stamps funded by the federal government.

Action Friday, July 25th: Demand the Release of the Epstein Files + Reprise Issues From the Week

Here is today’s Call to Action from Mid Maine Indivisible. Also, remember our weekly actions here in the Bangor area! The Tuesday Weekly Vigil at the Federal Building in Bangor and the Wednesday Weekly Orono Protest. And volunteer with Indivisible Bangor!!!– Dave

    Hi Folks,

Good morning everyone, Friday is here!

Yes, you probably have heard more than you wish about the Epstein Files and the horrors within. This is a moment in time when it is worth calling our Congressional Delegation to demand the release of these files. We don’t know what they contain but Trump appears to be on his back foot on this one and the public deserves to know more. Go to 5calls.org for more details on this issue.

    Reprise issues from this week:

Call our Senators and ask them to oppose the nomination of Emil Bove, (Nosferatu 2) for the Federal Appeals Court (3d circuit). Once there, Trump, can advance him to the Supreme Court. He is really bad news. Details and links below. (Vote likely on Monday)

Support clean energy as below and also ask our delegation to vote to extend the ACA tax credits.

    TODAY’S ACTION (s)

    • Call our Congressional Delegation to demand the release of the Epstein Files: Donald Trump promised the release of the client list throughout his 2024 presidential campaign. Pam Bondi, his Attorney General, publicly claimed the list was sitting on her desk. However, on July 6th, Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) released a memo concluding that Epstein did not have a client list and declining to publicly release evidence.(from 5calls.org)
    • Call our Congress people to support clean energy:  The Citizens’ Climate Lobby is 800 strong in DC lobbying for funding clean energy and passing reform legislation for energy projects. To learn more and call in through their website go here.Use these handouts for additional talking points if you like, or just use the link.

Action Thursday, July 24th : For the Heart + Follow up on Actions Proposed Earlier in the Week: Oppose Bove, Support Clean Energy, Defend the ACA

Here is today’s Call to Action from Mid Maine Indivisible. Also, remember our weekly actions here in the Bangor area! The Tuesday Weekly Vigil at the Federal Building in Bangor and the Wednesday Weekly Orono Protest. – Dave

    Hi Folks,

Good morning everyone, it’s Thursday and time to recharge before the week ends. Actually we can take three calming breaths, any time, any day, throughout the day.  Our unchecked franticness and despair does not help us run the marathon we are in.

Call our Senators and ask them to oppose the nomination of Emil Bove, (Nosferatu 2) for the Federal Appeals Court (3d circuit). Once there, Trump, can advance him to the Supreme Court. He is really bad news. Details and links below.

From earlier this week – support clean energy as below and also ask our delegation to vote to extend the ACA tax credits.

    For the Heart
For Your Heart this Fifth Week of Summer:
Life is made up of Pleasant, Unpleasant, and Neither Pleasant or Unpleasant sensations in the body. This is the Second Foundation of Mindfulness. Usually human beings crave the pleasant and push away the unpleasant. If we do this too strongly, we get thrown off center.

How leaky are the borders of man-made states!

How many clouds float over them scot-free,

how much desert sand sifts from  country to country,

how many mountain pebbles roll onto foreign turf

    in provocative leaps!

Need I cite each and every bird as it flies,

or alights, as now, on the lowered gate?

Even if it be a sparrow—its tail is abroad,

thought its beak is still home. As if that weren’t enough—it keeps fidgeting!

Out of countless insects I will single out the ant,

who, between the guard’s left and right boots,

feels unobliged to answer questions of origin and destination.

If only this whole mess could be seen at once in detail

    on ever continent!

Isn’t that a privet on the opposite bank

smuggling its hundred-thousandth leaf across the river?

Who else but the squid, brazenly long-armed,

would violate the sacred territorial waters.?

How can we speak of any semblance of order

when we can’t rearrange the stars

to know which one  shines for whom?

Not to mention the reprehensible spreading of fog!

Or the dusting of the steppe over its entire range

as though it weren’t split in two!

Or voices carried over accommodating air waves:

    summoning squeals and suggestive gurgles!

Only what’s human can be truly alien.

The rest is mixed forest, undermining moles, and wind.

    TODAY’S ACTION (s)

Go to 5calls.org to get more talking points on this.

Loving kindness towards ourselves doesn’t mean getting rid of anything.  It means we can still be crazy after all these years.  We can still be angry after all these years. We can still be timid or jealous or full of feelings of unworthiness.  The point is not to try to throw ourselves away and become something better.  It’s about befriending who we are already.   Pema Chodron
