Welcome to all the new members on our mailing list! Here is today’s newsletter from Indivisible Bangor, followed by the great list of important actions and information from our friends at Mid Maine Indivisible that includes information about Mike Johnson’s keeping the House in recess so Adelita Grijalva can’t be sworn in, preventing her from signing a petition to trigger a vote on legislation that would force the release of federal files on Jeffrey Epstein (PBS).

Also, actions from Hancock Country Democrats (Action 168: Comment NOW (closes TODAY)) and Bold Coast Civic Alliance (10/10).

    No Kings Bangor

An estimated 4000 people showed up on that bright, sunshiny day to be with friends and neighbors and listen to leaders in our community who spoke about our love for our country and the dangers of the Donald Trump administration.

Several news outlets were there, such as WABI, WLBZ, The Bangor Daily News, WVII, and WERU. People gave generously to our food bank drive!

We have plenty of photos on our Facebook page– check it out! If you’re not already part of our Facebook group, just ask to join!

Urge the EAC not to Require Documentary Proof of Citizenship
    COMMENTING OPPORTUNITY CLOSES TODAY, 10/20!

The Donald Trump administration has come up with another scheme to add documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) to the federal voter registration form, this time from The American First Legal Foundation (AFLF) which is Stephen Miller’s organization. The League of Women Voter’s has a great site with details, as well as the current calls to action from Hancock County Democrats and the Bold Coast Civic Alliance.

Please visit the LWV site and these two calls to action to learn more and for the link to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC)  website to leave a comment concerning this. It appears that the government comment site has had a large number of supportive comments, so we need to comment and let them know how restrictive this will be.

Canvass for Save Maine Absentee Voting!

Food AND Medicine is organizing a weekly canvassing action: “Canvass with us! Spread the word to our neighbors in Bangor to remember to vote, and talk about the issues that we all hold dear, and the candidates who support those values.

We’re going out each Saturday in October at 9am from our building at 20 Ivers Street, Brewer. Contact FAM@foodandmedicine.org to join us. We’ll have all the materials you need, and will train if you haven’t canvassed before. It’s actually fun! You don’t have to live in Bangor to canvass with us.”

There are other opportunities to canvass in Maine, too! Click here for a list!

We all know talking to people is an effective way to change hearts and minds on issues, so please don’t forget to talk to your family, friends, and neighbors about this!

Write a Letter to the Editor!

There are letters weekly playing this down, calling it “common sense” legislation and simply lying about the effects and intent of this voter suppression law. This is part of the continuing MAGA war on voting and we can stop it!

    Bangor City Council Elections

Also on Election Day, November 4th, Bangor residents will be voting to elect new members to sit on the Bangor City Council. The Bangor Daily News has profiled all nine City Council candidates. You can read about them here.

Stop the Occupation of American Cities!

We cannot allow Donald Trump’s continued use of armed federal agents and the military on American soil to intimidate and terrorize civilians to stand. This cannot be the new norm. The sole purpose of these actions is to intimidate and terrorize the local communities into compliance. Please contact your congressional delegation in Washington to let them know this is unacceptable and un-American. This should not be tolerated in our country!

OBAMACARE Price Hike Info Now Available

Information on premium increases for ACA healthcare plans for a dozen states has been made available, according to a New York Times article “Higher Obamacare Prices Become Public in a Dozen State – Consumers are facing greater costs for their 2026 A.C.A. health coverage as Congress continues to debate whether to extend subsidies that help people afford their premiums.”

From the article, “Based on the newly posted information, a family of four making $130,000 in Maine would face an increase of $16,100 in annual premiums next year.” Such an increase will result in many Mainers simply not having healthcare insurance any longer.

This is what the Democrats in the Senate are fighting against. Please contact your Maine senators and let them know you would like them to vote with the Democrats on the Continuing Resolution to extend the ACA tax credits!

And now to the Mid Maine Indivisible morning Call to Action!

Action Monday October 20th: Ask Congressional Representatives Pingree + Golden to Demand the House Be Brought Back Into Session – There is Work to be Done!

Hi Folks, it’s Monday and we know that roughly 7 million folks attended 2,700 recorded rallies in the United States, with rallies going on all over the globe as well. Public, mass protest is a key part of resistance strategy. Thanks to all of you who participated and supported the effort.

What Next? To find out what the NoKings2 national organizers are thinking about it and you can join them to hear their thoughts, Tuesday, October 21st at 8 pm, sign up here.

Speaker Mike Johnson has kept the House on recess for 3 weeks now in order to keep from having to swear in a new member of Congress: Adelita Grijalva won an election in Arizona on September 23’d, and has not been sworn in because of the recess. She is the final vote needed to get the discharge petition passed that will release the Epstein Files. Call Representatives Golden + Pingree to demand that the House be opened so that work can continue on this issue as well as many, many others.  See 5calls.org for more on this.

Now that Janet Mills has announced her candidacy for the Senate race against Collins, ask her to sign LD 1971 (already passed by the Maine Legislature) which restricts Maine Law Enforcement from working with ICE in Maine. “Maine Bill LD 1971 aims to protect workers by clarifying the relationship between state and local law enforcement agencies and federal immigration authorities. It restricts local law enforcement from detaining individuals solely for immigration enforcement purposes, promoting the rights and safety of residents and the workforce in Maine.”

TODAY’S ACTION (s) (just pick one!)

    • Call Reps Pingree + Golden and ask them to demand that the House Recess End Now: Work needs to get done and the Epstein files need to surface, we now have the votes necessary to force their opening if Adelita Grijalva can get sworn in.  For a script on this call go to 5calls.org.
    • Call or write Governor Mills and ask her to Sign LD 1971:  Go here to make a comment on this on her website.
    • Send a hand-delivered letter to Senator King to let him know you would like him to vote with the Democrats on the CR to extend the ACA tax credits:  Up to now he has consistently voted with the Republicans throughout the voting on the Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the budget.  He has also voted yes on the Democrat alternative. An Indivisible member of the DC Indivisible group Herd on the Hill will hand deliver your email as a letter if you send her the letter as an email.
    • Call or email our Congressional Representatives to publicly condemn the administration’s use of our Military to create havoc in Blue Cities:  It is time to publicly denounce these unconstitutional, king-like actions of our Executive branch. Where is the outrage? Go to 5calls.org for a script on this request.
    • Send your comment on the National ID Voter Requirement to the Election Assistance Commission: For details see description in section one of this email. Go here to comment. See attachment below for more info. Comment period ends today, October 20th.
    • Vote absentee today especially if you want to be involved on Election Day canvassing, tabling, or helping work the polls: see the links above or below to get moving on this.
    • Get involved in the referendum questions coming up in Maine on November 4th:  Here is the wording of the questions; you can donate and canvass to oppose the voter ID law (Question 1) by going to SaveAbsenteeMe , and you can support the institution of a Red Flag Law (Question 2) by going to the Maine Gun Safety Coalition. You can request your absentee ballot herenow. One yes vote (Red Flag), one no vote (Voter ID).
    • Call Governor Mills and our Congressional Representatives:  Ask Mills to deny any request from the Trump administration to deploy National Guard Troops for local law enforcement; Ask our representatives to sound the alarm about the use of US Military to intimidate and harass peaceful, public protests. Go here for wording on this.
    • Consider volunteering and/or donating to one of the worthy immigrant support organizations listed below: Capital Area New Mainers ProjectMainers for Humane ImmigrationImmigrant Legal Advocacy Project, (all Maine based), and the Immigrant Legal Resource Center.

    Statewide Actions

    • Start a Poster/Chalking Campaign in Your Neighborhood! Go here for ideas and check in with Karen about a postering campaign in Mid Maine.
    • VOTE YES ON #2 – Support the effort to get a red flag gun law in Maine – Question 2 on this Fall’s Referendum. Gun rights advocates will be out in force to defeat this one. For more information go to the Maine Gun Safety Coalition. You can help by voting YES, canvassing and donating to this cause as well.
    • Ask Janet Mills to join other Blue States to call for a redistricting of Maine so that Democratic candidates have the edge in the second district, if and only if other states join Texas in redistricting to the Republican advantage. For talking points on this go here. For a toolkit on this for red and blue states go here.
    • If you know your Maine Representative or Senator is supportive of making ICE accountable in Maine,  ask them to join with Representative Cassie Julia to put in a bill to ensure proper identification of ICE agents acting in Maine. Lawmakers in California have introduced legislation requiring the identity and affiliation of ICE agents to be displayed while interacting with the public.
    • Check out Graham Platner’s “Un-Shuck The System Tour”,  TONIGHT – Wednesday 10/15 Auburn/Lewiston, Craft Brew Underground 6pm, Thursday 10/16 Waterville, VFW Hall 6 pm, to sign up go here or go to Grahamforsenate.com

  • A Message from Food AND Medicine

    Friends,

We are working hard on the Bangor races, which are arguably the most important in the state. As I’m sure you know, for the Bangor City Council there are 3 open seats, with 9 candidates this year. A lot of strange play can happen with so many candidates and 3 seats. Last year, during a presidential election, 6,027 votes got people on the council, and there were 22,414 votes left blank! This year there will be a much lighter turnout. In light of these dynamics, we are strongly encouraging a bloc vote. In my view, we have:

Three good candidates: Angela Walker, Susan Faloon and Daniel Carson. All of them filled out our questionnaire showing they support our values, and they have been endorsed by FAM and the Eastern Maine Labor Council.

    • Daniel Carson is on FAM’s board and is all about the movement and building worker power. He does well with process and committees—something sorely needed in Bangor.
    • Angela Walker is Indigenous, with a strong commitment to her recovery and sharing recovery with others; she currently works at the BARN.
    • Susan Faloon is a solid progressive who supports workers, marginalized people, and justice-based solutions to our issues.

Three not-so-good candidates: Richard Ward, Colleen O’Neal and Justin Cartier range from a conspiracy theorist, to someone who proudly uses neo-Nazi rhetoric, to someone who is very anti-homeless. Colleen and Justin will likely get significant votes with name recognition, as they were Republican representative candidates in the last election.

Three mixed candidates: Steven Ferren, Reese Perkins and James Gallagher. A vote for any of these three candidates may put Ward, O’Neal, or Cartier onto the council. None of these candidates filled out our questionnaire.

For the Bangor School Committee — it’s really tough. There are 4 candidates for 2 spots; 3 are really good, and one is truly awful:

    • Mallory Cook and Benjamin Speed: we think both are great, and we have endorsed both.
    • Frank Casella is someone that has no business being on our School Committee. Here’s the BDN write-up on Casella (language warning):

“Casella is active on X, formerly known as Twitter, and has shared opinions online criticizing immigrants for not assimilating to American culture, ‘gender ideology,’ and the Muslim faith. He has written that ‘Islam is a backwards religion’ and called people ‘whore’ and ‘stupid commie retard.’” (Note: some of these posts may have been taken down.)

    • Laura Otis: she’s really good, but unfortunately, a vote for her will likely end up putting Frank Casella on the School Committee.

    What can you do?

    1. Vote for the bloc of endorsed candidates: We are encouraging people to vote as a bloc for both City Council and School Committee, meaning vote for all of our endorsed candidates to avoid splitting votes. If people split votes, it opens the door for some pretty poor candidates to get elected.
    2. City Council and School Committee Forum: This will be on Thursday, October 16, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. It would be good to have a strong turnout.
    3. Door knock with us: We are knocking doors in Bangor all the time, especially Saturdays beginning at 9 a.m. We have materials and will train you if you’ve never done it. It’s really enjoyable having conversations with our neighbors. This is a great volunteer opportunity to make a difference in our community.
    4. Speak to friends and neighbors: With so much at stake, we are encouraging people to speak to their friends and neighbors, because some people don’t know these details.

Let us know if you want to join in—especially for the door knocks. Just reply to this email. See below for info on this Saturday’s No Kings rally and march in Bangor, organized by Indivisible.

    Take care,
    Jack

“This is we the people rising up,” Marianne Larson, one of the rally organizers with Indivisible Bangor, said. “We don’t like what’s happening in the country. This is our democracy, and we’re going to defend it.”

Broadway Park, at Broadway and North Park Street (Stillwater Ave.), is a large, green, beautiful park that is perfect for our event! We will have guest speakers and the day should be a nice, cool, and partly sunny day! There will be music, people in costume, and it will be a joyous occasion!

While there is not a large parking lot available just for Broadway Park, there is plenty of parking all around the neighborhood and at local shopping centers. Some people are carpooling, being dropped off, or meeting nearby and walking to the park.

There are accessible spaces around N. Park that are marked off for attendees with an accessibility placard/plate. There will be an organizer near these spots that can help secure one for you. Please keep in mind they are first come first served.

We have now booked ASL interpreters for our event!

Use these graphics to change your profile picture on social media. We need to continue to build momentum around this movement. Make it unavoidable. Make it the thing to do. The last thing we want to hear is members of our own community saying, “I didn’t know it was happening.” Spread the word.

Invite your friends and family to join in the fun. There is a No Kings Day event within driving distance anywhere a person may be across the country. Find an event near your loved ones, send the information to them, and ask them to be a part of this movement. Urge the EAC not to Require Documentary Proof of Citizenship
    COMMENTING OPPORTUNITY CLOSES MONDAY, 10/20!

Please contact your congressional delegation in Washington to let them know this is unacceptable and un-American. This should not be tolerated in our country!

    STOP THE TRUMP SHUTDOWN
    What you can do

Republicans shut down the federal government because they insist on taking away healthcare and giving Trump another blank check to fuel his dangerous and illegal power grab. The Indivisible toolkit has everything you need to know about our next steps, including how to hold Republicans accountable, how to help Democrats hold the line, and how to mobilize locally against blank checks for a wannabe king.

    In the News

Speaking of the shutdown and, as if you don’t have enough news to read, here are two New York Times gift articles concerning the shutdown, including how Donald Trump is using this as another excuse to punish Democratic districts while attempting to bribe Argentinian voters to vote for his ally:

And now to the Mid Maine Indivisible morning Call to Action!

Action Friday October 17th: Get Your NOKINGS2 On For Tomorrow + Bring Some Friends + Vote Now on Referendum Questions : No on 1, Yes on 2

Hi Folks, it’s Friday and we are one day away from what will likely be the biggest Mass Protest in US History, NOKINGS2. Get some friends to go with you.  Bring young people you know. Find some inflatable frog costumes to wear!  Bring lots of flags. Bring some extra food (power bars are great) to give to someone who may need a little nourishment.

If you are interested in great signs to make for the event go to The Big List of Protest Signs for #NoKings 10/18.  Go to the Activate Maine calendar, and Mobilize site to see if there is an event planned near you for October 18th.  Spread the word about NoKings by sharing this website.  Watch our Attendee Best Practices video. Get oriented to the basics of how to prepare for and navigate through your No Kings protest in less than four minutes. The best way to promote joy is by making sure you’re acting in a way that keeps everyone around you safe. Use these graphics to change your profile picture on social media.  (Thank you Indivisible Bangor for these links!)

Keep working on forcing the Republicans  to negotiate to include the Health Insurance tax extensions in the Budget Bill.  You can use the Indivisible Toolkitfor this, as well as the 5calls.org information to help with your communications. Ask Senator King to join the Democrats in voting against the Republican CR. He continues to vote with the Republicans on their CR, and with the Democrats on their CR measure.

    • Get ready for NoKings2: For sign ideas go here   For de-escalation training go here    To find the demonstration place nearest you go here and sign up here.
    • Call or write Governor Mills and ask her to Sign LD 1971:  Go here to make a comment on this on her website.
    • Celebrate Indigenous People’s Day Every Day:  Go to the website Cultural Survival for 15 actions you can take to support Indigenous Peoples on this day.
Go to 5calls.org for the latest info. on the firings in Education and the CDC that Trump is instigating.
    • Donate to Paola’s family – the victim of ICE kidnapping here in Kennebec County:  See above and the attached email below for more details.  Go to the Community Relief Fund webpage to make your donation.
    • Send your comment on the National ID Voter Requirement to the Election Assistance Commission: For details see description in section one of this email. Go here to comment. See attachment below for more info.
    • Call on our Congressional Representatives to demand the release of the Homan and Epstein Files:  Democrat Adelita Grijalva just got elected to the US House, giving us enough votes to force the release of the files, but Mike Johnson has kept the House on recess in part to avoid this vote. This makes release of these files even more important.  According to reliable sources, the FBI has video of our man Homan accepting $50,000 in a Cava bag in return for a promise to give undercover agents Government Contracts once Trump gets back into office. Learn more here.  Trump is considering pardoning sex trafficker and abuser Ghislaine Maxwell who most likely has the dirt on him.

    ***Nationwide No Kings Protest!***
    ***Saturday 10-18-25***

    ***NOON to 2pm***
    ***Broadway Park, Bangor***
    ***ASL Interpreted***

Broadway Park, at Broadway and North Park Street (Stillwater Ave.), is a large, green, beautiful park that is perfect for our event! We will have guest speakers and the day should be a nice, cool, and partly sunny day! There will be music, people in costume, and it will be a joyous occasion!

While there is not a large parking lot available just for Broadway Park, there is plenty of parking all around the neighborhood and at local shopping centers. Some people are carpooling, being dropped off, or meeting nearby and walking to the park.

We have now booked ASL interpreters for our event!

Need ideas for signs? Check out “The Big List of Protest Signs for #NoKings 10/18” from Antonia Scatton. MANY great ideas to help win over the hearts and minds of the unaware and undecided!

Speaking of signs, there is a sign making party at the Food AND Medicine building in Brewer this Friday! 10/17 from 6-8 pm! The Food and Medicine building is located at 20 Ivers Street in Brewer. Here We Go Map here.

Bring American flags! Encourage your friends to do the same, and let’s reclaim this symbol and remind the world that the freedom we stand for is freedom for all. Pick some up at affordable prices at Reny’s!

Ezra Levin was on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC Monday night. Check out his appearance here where he talks about this being the largest peaceful protest in American history and his take on the Republican efforts to label Saturday as the opposite of what it really is.

Before No Kings Day on Saturday:
Watch our Attendee Best Practices video. Get oriented to the basics of how to prepare for and navigate through your No Kings protest in less than four minutes. The best way to promote joy is by making sure you’re acting in a way that keeps everyone around you safe.

Use these graphics to change your profile picture on social media.

Bonus: You can promise to swap pictures during the event to give them a little extra motivation to go.

Please bring non-perishables and personal care items for donations to local food cupboards.

Click the link below for more info, especially parking info!
    And tell a friend!

We want this to be even larger than June’s protest!

Videos to Help Prepare for Saturday

Last night’s ACLU “Protest Safety, Know Your Rights & De-Escalation” training is not yet available to view, but their “Know Your Rights” training for the 6/14 No Kings event is. View it here. It starts in Spanish, but the rest of it is in English.

The “No Kings Safety & De-escalation Training” from 9/25 & 10/9 is also available. View the training here.

No Kings also has a short clip of Tips for No Kings Attendees here.

Wired Magazine has a video how governments spy on protestors and how to avoid it. Check it out here. (Another good Wired clip, about how ICE spies on American citizens is here.)

Urge the EAC not to Require Documentary Proof of Citizenship
    COMMENTING OPPORTUNITY CLOSES MONDAY, 10/20!

Please visit the LWV site and these two calls to action to learn more and for the link to the government website to leave a comment concerning this. It appears that the government comment site has had a large number of supportive comments, so we need to comment and let them know how restrictive this will be.

    Special Event with Nirav Shah

Join Nirav Shah for a special event on Monday, October 20 from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Flight Deck Brewing in Brunswick. This event is open to all ages – food and live music provided! RSVP required – register today!

FLIGHT DECK BREWING, 11 ATLANTIC AVE BRUNSWICK, ME 04011

RSVP required for entry. Friends and family are welcome. Open to all ages, light refreshments provided.

Bangor City Council and the 287g Agreement

Background on the 287g agreement on the ICE site (including a list of all 1,034 agencies in the country that participate) and a more accurate take from the Immigrants Legal Resource Center. Wells, Maine, has already entered into an agreement and is the only municipality in Maine to do so.

Last night, October 15, the Bangor City Council voted on a resolution. View proceedings here.

Write a Letter to the Editor!

There are letters weekly playing this down, calling it “common sense” legislation and simply lying about the effects and intent of this voter suppression law. This is part of the continuing MAGA war on voting and we can stop it!

As the song says: “People Get Ready, There’s a Train Coming”.When you are putting up signs related to the referendum in public places legally you need to have the date you put the sign up, and an address or email of the person or organization putting up the sign. For full information on this read Hancock County Democratic Committee Action 171. People are being contentious about this.

Bring flags, and make sure your signs are non-violent. This will be a historic effort!

The Powwow at the End of the World

    By Sherman Alexie

I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall

after an Indian woman puts her shoulder to the Grand Coulee Dam

and topples it. I am told by many of you that I must forgive

and so I shall after the floodwaters burst each successive dam

downriver from the Grand Coulee. I am told by many of you

that I must forgive and so I shall after the floodwaters find

their way to the mouth of the Columbia River as it enters the Pacific

and causes all of it to rise. I am told by many of you that I must forgive

and so I shall after the first drop of floodwater is swallowed by that salmon

waiting in the Pacific. I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall

after that salmon swims upstream, through the mouth of the Columbia

and then past the flooded cities, broken dams and abandoned reactors

of Hanford. I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall

after that salmon swims through the mouth of the Spokane River

as it meets the Columbia, then upstream, until it arrives

in the shallows of a secret bay on the reservation where I wait alone.

I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall after

that salmon leaps into the night air above the water, throws

a lightning bolt at the brush near my feet, and starts the fire

which will lead all of the lost Indians home. I am told

by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall

after we Indians have gathered around the fire with that salmon

who has three stories it must tell before sunrise: one story will teach us

    how to pray; another story will make us laugh for hours;

the third story will give us reason to dance. I am told by many

of you that I must forgive and so I shall when I am dancing

with my tribe during the powwow at the end of the world.

    Protest Safety,
Know Your Rights & De-Escalation Training TONIGHT-see below

Bonus: You can promise to swap pictures during the event to give them a little extra motivation to go.

Please bring non-perishables and personal care items for donations to local food cupboards.

    ACLU’s No Kings: Protest Safety,
Know Your Rights & De-Escalation Training

    TONIGHT NIGHT 10/15

Before you hit the streets for the No Kings National Day of Protest– join our know your rights, protest safety, and de-escalation training on 10/15/25 at 7 PM ET.

WHAT: ACLU’s Protest Safety, Know Your Rights and De-Escalation Training
WHEN: TONIGHT, Wednesday, October 15th at 7 PM ET
    WHERE: On Zoom!

Urge the EAC not to Require Documentary Proof of Citizenship

The Donald Trump administration has come up with another scheme to add documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) to the federal voter registration form, this time from The American First Legal Foundation (AFLF) which is Stephen Miller’s organization. The League of Women Voter’s has a great site with details, as well as the current calls to action from Hancock County Democrats and the Bold Coast Civic Alliance.

Please visit the LWV site and these two calls to action to learn more and for the link to the government website to leave a comment concerning this. It appears that the government comment site has had a large number of supportive comments, so we need to comment and let them know how restrictive this will be.

TONIGHT, October 15, at 7 PM, the Bangor City Council will vote on the Reaffirming Safety, Trust, and Community Priorities in Local Law Enforcement Policies Resolve. (Tonight’s agenda – Dave)

This important measure makes clear that Bangor’s local resources should be focused on supporting the people who live here—not on helping federal immigration enforcement. It would also ensure transparency and public oversight before the City ever considers cooperating with federal agencies like ICE.

While we had hoped for this to be a binding ordinance, this resolve is an important step in the right direction—and passing it will help us build toward stronger, permanent protections in the future.

We need your help to make sure it passes.

    Here’s what you can do:

    Attend the City Council meeting
Join us at Bangor City Hall (Council Chambers) this TONIGHT Wednesday, October 15, at 7:00 PM.
We’re looking for Bangor residents to fill the chambers and speak during public comment in support of the resolve. Even just being there in person shows the Council that our community cares.

    Give public comment

Share why you support the resolve—because local resources should go toward Bangor’s needs, not federal immigration work; because ICE raids and increased federal presence are creating fear in our community; or because everyone deserves safety and dignity, no matter where they were born.

    Email all City Councilors
If you can’t attend, please send a quick email to citycouncil@bangormaine.gov urging them to vote YES

You can find a copy of the resolve, talking points and a sample email here.

    Share your story
We are also gathering stories from directly impacted people that we can share during public comment. We do not expect directly impacted people to attend unless they feel comfortable doing so. We will have trusted community members there who can share these stories on their behalf. If you or someone you know has been affected by ICE activity in Bangor or fears cooperating with local police because of immigration enforcement, please reach out.

Your voice matters. Together, we can make Bangor a city where everyone feels safe and welcome. – MPA

Write a Letter to the Editor!

There are letters weekly playing this down, calling it “common sense” legislation and simply lying about the effects and intent of this voter suppression law. This is part of the continuing MAGA war on voting and we can stop it!

The League of Women Voters/Democracy Maine, which is part of the Save Maine Absentee Voting coalition, is organizing several letter-to-the-editor training opportunities on Zoom.

    Remember: Your voice matters.

    • TONIGHT, Wednesday, October 15, 6:30-7:30 p.m. RSVP here!

We’re going out each Saturday in October, starting tomorrow, 10/11 at 9am from our building at 20 Ivers Street, Brewer. Contact FAM@foodandmedicine.org to join us. We’ll have all the materials you need, and will train if you haven’t canvassed before. It’s actually fun! You don’t have to live in Bangor to canvass with us.”

    • TOMORROW, Wednesday, October 15, 6:30-7:30 p.m. RSVP here!

    Apple Removes ICEBlock App

Reported by NBC News. To comply with a demand from the Donald Trump administration, DoJ officials, at the request of Attorney General Pamela Bondi, “reached out” to Apple, after which Apple removed the ICEBlock app and other apps that share user generated location information of ICE activity. The excuse given is weak and inconsistent with reality.

Google complied with a similar action without having been “reached out” to by Pam Bondi. This is another example of how companies “obey in advance,” even huge tech companies.

Contact Apple and Google (must sign in) to let them know this is unacceptable!

    States Have a Win!

As reported in a recent edition of the Bangor Daily News, “Feds drop ICE clause from crime victim grants after lawsuit by Maine and 20 states.” The federal government had tied Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grants to the states with their complying with ICE demands. Yesterday, 10/6, they dropped that requirement. That is a win!

And now to the Mid Maine Indivisible morning Call to Action!

Action Tuesday October 14th: Get Ready for NoKings2 on Saturday + Vote Absentee – No on #1, Yes on #2

Hi Folks, it’s Tuesday and we are 4 days away from what will possibly be the biggest non-violent mass protest in the history of our country.

Get ready for NoKings2 on Saturday. If you are interested in great signs to make for the event go to The Big List of Protest Signs for #NoKings 10/18if you are concerned about hecklers or confrontations attend the ACLU’s training on De Escalation Wednesday, October 15th at 7 PM ET on Zoom, go here to sign up.Go to the Activate Maine calendar, and Mobilize site to see if there is an event planned near you for October 18th. Get three friends to join you. If there isn’t an event within an hour of you, plan one on a bridge or a public crossroads near you. Bring flags, and make sure your signs are non-violent. This will be a historic effort!

In honor of the fact that every day is a day that we can honor Indigenous Peoples, take action and go to  Cultural Survival, an excellent website with 15 calls to action.

Would you like a letter hand delivered to Senator King’s Office asking him to vote with the Democrats to extend the ACA tax credits? An Indivisible member of DC Indivisible group Herd on the Hill will hand deliver your letter if you send her an email. A printed letter arriving in the DC office probably has more impact than an email, or possibly a call. There is likely to be a vote in the Senate tonight.

When you are putting up signs related to the referendum in public places legally you need to have the date you put the sign up, and an address or email of the person or organization putting up the sign. For full information on this read Hancock County Democratic Committee Action 171. People are being contentious about this.

    TODAY’S ACTION (s)

    • Get ready for NoKings2: For sign ideas go here   For De escalation training go here    To find the demonstration place nearest you go here and sign up here.
    • Celebrate Indigenous People’s Day Every Day:  Go to the website Cultural Survival for 15 actions you can take to support Indigenous Peoples on this day.
    • Send a hand-delivered letter to Senator King to let him know you would like him to vote with the Democrats on the CR to extend the ACA tax credits:  Up to now he has consistently voted with the Republicans throughout the voting on the Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the budget. An Indivisible member of the DC Indivisible group Herd on the Hill will hand deliver your email as a letter if you send her the letter as an email. Go to 5calls.org for the latest info. on the firings in Education and the CDC that Trump is instigating.

    • Check out Graham Platner’s “Un-Shuck The System Tour”,  Wednesday 10/15 Auburn/Lewiston, Craft Brew Underground 6pm, Thursday 10/16 Waterville, VFW Hall 6 pm, to sign up go here or go to Grahamforsenate.com

  • Action 171 – ALERT – Road Signs and Postcards

Action 171 – ALERT – Road Signs and Postcards

    1.  Road Signs:  Today in the Hancock County Democratic Committee office, while three of us were preparing postcard packets (see item 2), a rather bossy-sounding woman stormed in to tell us that our road signs were not legally marked.  When they are in the right-of-way, all political signs have to have a DATE and a CONTACT on them, per state law. (1) She was absolutely correct, even if she wouldn’t leave her name and we don’t know her motive. This pertains to the Platner signs, the yellow “No on 1” signs, the “Resist” signs, and the signs you make yourself. The red “no on 1” signs are already appropriately marked.

Here is what you need to do:  Arm yourself with a “Sharpie”! (Just like you know who!)  On a sunny day, drive to the place where you put a sign (other than the red “no on 1” sign) in the road right-of-way. Write on the sign – the white margin is appropriate – the approximate date you put up the sign, and provide some sort of contact info. Examples could include your phone number, or email address, or your town committee contact info (if it’s ok with them). A quick fix for the black “resist” sign is to write on a small strip of white paper and cover it with clear packing tape. (Plain scotch tape tends to loosen in bad weather.) This is a hassle we can avoid in the future by labeling our signs BEFORE we place them. Also note the signs can be in the right-of-way for no more than 6 weeks during January-June and another 6 weeks during July-December.

    2.  Postcarding for NO on 1: In the HCDC office there are packets of 30 very nice postcards, complete with stamps, names and addresses of recipients, and complete instructions. If you have participated in postcard campaigns you know how enjoyable they can be. Packets will be flying out of the office this week: better get yours ASAP. The cards can be mailed as soon as completed, but in any case no later than October 25. HCDC is particularly grateful for the donation of stamps. A postcard stamp now costs 61 cents (can you believe it?) and we received enough stamps to send out 2000 postcards to Hancock County residents who are likely to be persuadable to vote NO on 1.  One hopes other Dem committees are as much on the ball!

Here’s the office info: until the November election it will be open 7 days a week from 10 am – 2 pm. It’s located at 53 Church Street The phone number is (207) 664-6012.

They also have road signs in limited quantities. (See item 1.)

    _____________________________________
    (1) Here is the language: L. Temporary signs placed within the public right-of-way for a maximum of 12 weeks per calendar year, except that a temporary sign may not be placed within the public right-of-way for more than 6 weeks from January 1st to June 30th or for more than 6 weeks from July 1st to December 31st. A temporary sign may not be placed within 30 feet of another temporary sign bearing the same or substantially the same message. A temporary sign may not exceed 4 feet by 8 feet in size. A sign under this paragraph must include or be marked with the name and address of the individual, entity or organization that placed the sign within the public right-of-way and the date the sign was erected within the public right-of-way.https://legislature.maine.gov/statutes/23/title23sec1913-A.html

    ***Nationwide No Kings Protest!***
    ***Saturday October 18, 2025***
    ***Broadway Park, Bangor***
    ASL Interpreted

    Tell your friends!!!

We had a perfect protest on that day in June at the Bangor Waterfront. That was a fantastic place, but it was already booked for 10/18, so we have selected Broadway Park for the Bangor location of this next “No Kings” national day of protest. Please tell your friends, as many people think it will be at the Waterfront again.

We have now booked ASL interpreters for our event!

Need ideas for signs? Check out “The Big List of Protest Signs for #NoKings 10/18” from Antonia Scatton. MANY great ideas to help win over the hearts and minds of the unaware and undecided!

    • He’s using OUR tax dollars to pay for HIS power grabs.
      •  Trump is pouring public money into his authoritarian takeovers of cities—deploying federal forces, seizing local police departments, and funding mass detention and deportation operations—while cutting services that working families rely on every single day.
    • That’s why we say: No Thrones. No Crowns. No Kings.
      • No Kings is about defending the ideals we fought for. This country doesn’t belong to strongmen. It belongs to the people.

Please bring non-perishables and personal care items for donations to local food cupboards.

Click the link below for more info, especially parking info!
    And tell a friend!

We want this to be even larger than June’s protest!

Bangor City Council and the 287g Agreement

The Bangor City Council will be holding a final vote on Wednesday, October 15th, regarding “A RESOLVE TO REAFFIRM SAFETY, TRUST, AND COMMUNITY PRIORITIES IN IMMIGRATION AND LOCAL ENFORCEMENT POLICIES.” This affects all of us in the Bangor region.

Background on the 287g agreement on the ICE site (including a list of all 1,034 agencies in the country that participate) and a more accurate take from the Immigrants Legal Resource Center. Wells, Maine, has already entered into an agreement and is the only municipality in Maine to do so.

And now to the Mid Maine Indivisible morning Call to Action!

Action Monday October 13th: Celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day By Taking Action + Write a Hand Delivered Letter to Senator King on the CR Urging Him to Vote With the Democrats

Hi Folks, today is Maine’s seventh Indigenous Peoples Day. Although there are not as many events as last year, if you have the day off consider going to one of these museums which are focusing in part on Indigenous Peoples. The Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine will host the Burnurwubskek Singers from the Penobscot Nation who will share music and stories with visitors. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is included with admission. The Portland Museum of Art will open with free admission for all for a self-guided tour of displays, galleries, and performances centered around indigenous nations. The museum opens at 10 a.m. The Abbe Museum will hold free programming including performances and art displays taking visitors through different aspects of Wabanaki culture. The Museum opens at 10 a.m.

Want to take action around Indigenous Peoples’ Issues – Cultural Survival is an excellent website with 15 calls to action. Massachusetts apparently has a whole host of activities state-wide which they list.  If you know of more activities than I listed above for Maine, please email me before 10:00 am and I will send out an addendum this morning with more Maine activities. The Wabanaki have been here for 10 thousand years, so really we should have a “people who immigrated to the americas” day once a year, and the rest of the year should be Indigenous Peoples.

Finally if you are unlike me and like to plan things out in advance – make sure you know where you are going for this Saturday’s NoKings2 event. It will likely be the biggest mass protest in the history of the United States. There are over 2,500 sites for action across the country. Go to the Activate Maine calendar, and Mobilize site to see if there is an event planned near you for October 18th. Get three friends to join you. If there isn’t one within an hour of you, plan one on a bridge or a public crossroads near you. Bring flags, and make sure your signs are non-violent. This will be a historic effort!

    • Celebrate Indigenous People’s Day: Visit the Abbe Museum, Portland Museum of Art, + the Children’s Museum and Theater of Maine for Indigenous Peoples displays. Go to the website Cultural Survival for 15 actions you can take to support Indigenous Peoples on this day.

    • Call Governor Mills to ask her to deny any request from the administration to deploy National Guard troops in Maine to conduct law enforcement activities.  We don’t need them.
    • Start a Poster/Chalking Campaign in Your Neighborhood! Go here for ideas and check in with Karen about a postering campaign in Mid Maine.
    • Check out Graham Platner’s “Un-Shuck The System Tour”,  TONIGHT, Monday 10/13 Augusta, Cushnoc Brewing 6 pm, Wednesday 10/15 Auburn/Lewiston, Craft Brew Underground 6pm, Thursday 10/16 Waterville, VFW Hall 6 pm, to sign up go here or go to Grahamforsenate.com

    Actions

    1) Add a public comment on the petition to change U.S. voting rules

The far right is still trying to limit voting accessibility, even though the SAVE Act did not pass in Congress, and Trump’s Executive Order to require proof of citizenship was thwarted by a judge. Now the America First Legal Foundation (AFLF), co-founded by none other than white supremacist Stephen Miller, has a petition before the Election Assistance Commission (EAC)to change the rules to require Documentary Proof of Citizenship (DPOC). Now through October 20th we have the opportunity to add our public comments. At the moment, the comments section seems to be flooded by people supporting this rules change, many if not most of whom are submitting identical comments. We need to get our comments in there, and it’s best if we personalize them, especially if we have actual experience with voting issues or know someone who has.

    Comment here: https://www.regulations.gov/document/EAC-2025-0236-0001/comment

    2) Oppose the building of a Qatari military base in Idaho

Contact Senators King and Collins and Representative Golden to tell them to speak out against the announced deal to allow Qatar to build a military base in Idaho. Qatar is a foreign country that supports and hides known terrorists. Their military should have no home here in the U.S.

NO KINGS DAY: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18th! For a moment of nostalgia: Be there or be square! 😉(Seriously, though, I think this one is important and needs to be HUGE.)

I kept things short today because Monday’s list was long and so much of the issue just keep continuing. Do what you can, as always, and have a great weekend!

    Yours in Civic Action,
