This is a new vigil and they need more participants.

Hi Folks, it’s Monday and, as Sonny and Cher might say: “The Beat Goes On”.

Avelo Airlines, flying now out of PORTLAND, Maine,  has a contract with ICE to deport folks who ICE has abducted. There is no due process for these people. They are flown to unknown countries and detention centers. Avelo is making big money off this unethical and fundamentally unconstitutional agreement. We need to make this a money-loser for Avelo. Take the “I Won’t Fly Avelo” pledge.  Call their leadership and tell them to drop the Deportation Contract with ICE. Deportations are happening now.  People are getting flown out of  Portland, Maine.  Let’s stop this. (This is a major campaign of National Indivisible)

Consider putting up posters in your neck of the woods.  If you don’t want to use paper, consider the Chalking Project proposed by Audacity. Chalk “Truth Matters” on public roads and sidewalks. 

Oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics. This nomination is still up in the air.

TODAY’S ACTION (s)

• Contact Avelo Airlines and ask them to “Drop the Deportation Contract” they currently have with ICE: Ground Avelo has all the information you need to call, email Avelo, and/or participate in an action at the Portland Airport – check with Cumberland Indivisible on this – they are planning actions on this issue. No airlines should be making money off deporting our neighbors and friends. Let’s stop this.
• Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics:  Why? This position is supposed to be non-partisan so economists can base their plans for the economy on it. EJ has made it clear he is a Trump loyalist, and will slant the figures he uses to show that Trump and Co. are doing a great job. Go here for a statement from the friends of the Bureau of Labor Statistics which lays out in non-partisan language how Senators should assess Antoni’s nomination.
• Set up a meeting with one member of our Congressional Delegation: I know it feels like it’s futile with some of them, but you never know where the tipping point is on any of these issues.Here are some of the guidelines that Indivisible Mid Maine uses for our meetings, and here is a list of some meetings we have organized and topics covered. Please contact Bonnie if you are interested in hearing more. 
• Get a poster/chalking campaign going in your neighborhood – there are telephone poles everywhere:  Indivisible Cumberland County has some great ones you can use – click here – this will lead you to an email you can send to Jennifer Morris. We have attached their poster ideas at the bottom of this email. Contact Karen for the Mid Maine Poster Campaign.Design your own signs and/or get an artist to design some for you. Remember poles belong to CMP and overtly political statements may be subject to legal action, however they seem to be ok with lost cats and dogs. Audacity in the Midcoast has called for Chalking “Truth Matters” on every public surface – roads and sidewalks!

• Start a Poster/Chalking Campaign in Your Neighborhood! Go here for ideas and check in with Karen about a postering campaign in Mid Maine on this Tuesday at the Waterville UU Church.  Poster ideas also attached below.
• Go to Activate Maine for statewide actions.

• Stand Up for Palestinan Rights:  For events going on around the state in support of the Palestinian people go to Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights here.
• If you know your Maine Representative or Senator is supportive of making ICE accountable in Maine,  ask them to join with Representative Cassie Julia to put in a bill to ensure proper identification of ICE agents acting in Maine. Lawmakers in California have introduced legislation requiring the identity and affiliation of ICE agents to be displayed while interacting with the public.

We are hoping to help CANMP with donations from folks at the rally who can afford to give.

Hi Folks, it’s Friday, and we’ve made it to the end of the week.

Maine All Care has alerted us that there will be a chance to speak out today at the Maine Bureau of Insurance virtual forum from 9 am to review the proposals to raise insurance by 32.7%. Maine Superintendent of Insurance, Bob Casey will be there and reps of Insurance companies as well. You can send comments to them on this rate hike request at: insurance.pfr@maine.gov. You can also attend the forum by registering here. Thanks to Beth for bringing this to our attention.

There are lots of creative resistance acts going on throughout Maine. In the Camden/Rockland area the Audacity group is featuring several actions.

Texas Dems are in New York, Illinois and elsewhere and  are calling for national demonstration on  Saturday to bring light to the Texas attempt to steal the 2026 mid terms by gerrymandering 5 new Republican Districts.  Look for an event near you or create one!

• Speak out against brutal health insurance rate hikes today:  The Maine Bureau of Insurance is holding a virtual public forum at 9:00  to discuss the rate hikes of 32.7% requested by a number of health insurers. You can participate live, by registering here; or send comments to this email – insurance.pfr@maine.gov. Alert on this came from Maine All Care.

Hi Folks, it’s a For-the-Heart Thursday.

There are lots of creative resistance acts going on throughout Maine. In the Camden/Rockland area the Audacity group is featuring several actions. See a copy of one of their weekly newsletters below. In Portland Cumberland Indivisible is offering a webinar on climate change tonight.

Consider putting up posters in your neck of the woods.  I have attached ideas for them from Jennifer, Cumberland Indivisible below.  If you don’t want to use paper, consider the Chalking Project proposed by Audacity. Chalk “Truth Matters” on public roads and sidewalks. Consider asking businesses in your area to put up an “All Are Welcome Here” sign created by Nina and attached below. 

Texas Dems are in New York, Illinois and elsewhere and  are calling for national demonstration on  Saturday to bring light to the Texas attempt to steal the 2026 mid terms by gerrymandering 5 new Republican Districts.  Look for an event near you or create one!

• Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics:  Why? This position is supposed to be non-partisan so economists can base their plans for the economy on it. EJ has made it clear he is a Trump loyalist, and will slant the figures he uses to show that Trump and Co. are doing a great job. The Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee, John Larsen has opposed this nomination. Our Senators should do the same. This action is direct from the authoritarian leader’s playbook – don’t like the stats? suppress them or manufacture better sounding ones. To learn more about Antoni go here.
• Find or create an event this Saturday, August 16th to support the Texas Democrats who have left the State:  They are doing this to save our Democracy, and not allow the State of Texas to help Republicans steal the 2026 election.  Register your event here.
• Set up a meeting with one member of our Congressional Delegation: I know it feels like it’s futile with some of them, but you never know where the tipping point is on any of these issues.Here are some of the guidelines that Indivisible Mid Maine uses for our meetings, and here is a list of some meetings we have organized and topics covered. • Get a poster/chalking campaign going in your neighborhood – there are telephone poles everywhere:  Indivisible Cumberland County has some great ones you can use – click here – this will lead you to an email you can send to Jennifer Morris. Contact Karen for the Mid Maine Poster Campaign.Design your own signs and/or get an artist to design some for you. Remember poles belong to CMP and overtly political statements may be subject to legal action, however they seem to be ok with lost cats and dogs. Audacity in the Midcoast has called for Chalking “Truth Matters” on every public surface – roads and sidewalks!

Trump didn’t like the data coming out of the Labor Department last week, so he fired the Commissioner of Labor Statistics. He says the figures were rigged.  We know whose ship this is and who is doing the rigging. He now is nominating EJ Antoni of the Heritage Foundation to be Commissioner of Labor Statistics. We need to oppose this nomination as he is an ideologue and will be Trump’s Toady. Details below.

Indivisible Cumberland County has created posters which can be put up on telephone poles – “Healthcare Shouldn’t Bankrupt Us” “Child Care Must be Affordable” “We Need Homes Not Palaces”. You can create your own – such as a favorite sign spotted recently: “Fight Truth Decay”, and “All Are Welcome Here”  If we can put lost cats and dogs on telephone polls we can also put up messages – everywhere.

It’s another Tesla Tuesday!

Lot’s going on this week. As you know Texas Dems have left the state so that the Texas Legislature doesn’t have the quorum necessary to change the electoral maps through unethical gerrymandering so that Texas gains 5 Republican seats. The self-exiled Dems are in New York, Illinois and elsewhere and they are calling for national demonstration on this Saturday to bring light to this attempt to steal the 2026 mid terms.  Look for an event near you or create one!

Trump is continuing to circle the military wagons to fire inward. He has deployed National Guard to Washington DC and “federalized” the DC police. He is able to do this more easily because DC is not a state. It should be. Call our Congressional Delegation and ask them to support HR51 and S51 to finally grant statehood to our Capitol City.

Linda suggests we all take action to let the Maine Turnpike Authority (877) 682-9433–dial 0 or stay on the line) that Mainers do not want a Chick-Fil-A vendor on the Maine Turnpike. This outfit is openly anti LGBQT+ and rooted in white, right wing, evangelical philosophy. They are early in the process at this point so this is a great time to voice your opinion.

Ask our Delegation to support DC statehood  HR 51 and S51 are the bills that would do this. Congress has the authority to do this on a simple majority vote!

• Set up a meeting with one member of our Congressional Delegation: I know it feels like it’s futile with some of them, but you never know where the tipping point is on any of these issues.Here are some of the guidelines that Indivisible Mid Maine uses for our meetings, and here is a list of some meetings we have organized and topics covered. Please contact Bonnie if you are interested in hearing more. 
• Call three friends to see if they would like to get more involved in the resistance: We need to build this movement, and that can only happen through using our friend and family networks to get people more involved. Invite interested folks to join the actions you are already involved in!
• Get a poster campaign going in your neighborhood – there are telephone polls everywhere:  Indivisible Cumberland County has some great ones you can use – click here – this will lead you to an email you can send to Jennifer Morris. Contact Karen for the Mid Maine Poster Campaign.Design your own signs and/or get an artist to design some for you. Remember poles belong to CMP and overtly political statements may be subject to legal action, however they seem to be ok with lost cats and dogs.

• If you know your Maine Representative or Senator is supportive of making ICE accountable in Maine,  ask them to join with Representative Cassie Julia to put in a bill to ensure proper identification of ICE agents acting in Maine. Lawmakers in California have introduced legislation requiring the identity and affiliation of ICE agents to be displayed while interacting with the public.

Please join us in assuring all Mainers have access to safe, legal, shame-free reproductive health care including abortions and contraceptive care. First Saturday of each Month at 2:30: Somerset Stands Up Rallies-Margaret Chase Smith Bridge, downtown Skowhegan. Bring your signs, American flags, your voice, your friends, families and neighbors for this peaceful gathering of concerned residents of Somerset County. Next one is September 6th, 2:30

Saturday August 16th at North Street Playground, Waterville 12 – 2:00 – Waterville Democrats Summer BBQ, there is the possibility that Jordan Wood (candidate for Senate) and Troy Jackson (candidate for governor) will be there as well as local Democrat Representatives. A great opportunity to ask them questions and support the local Dems! See the poster below!

Sunday, August 17th: at 1:00 (and every Sunday): Stand with us against Trump/Stephen Miller; For Peace in the Middle East, For Ukraine, Stop the War in Iran, etc. on the Bridge by CVS in Waterville.

Monday, September 1st: 10 to 12:00 noon:  Indivisible Mid Maine is planning a short march and rally in Watervillewith speakers, music and snacks. We have several speakers lined up, including Jon Godbout (CANMP), Jesse Hargrove (Maine Ed Assoc), and Andy O’Brien (Maine AFL-CIO). We are hoping to help CANMP with donations from folks at the rally who can afford to give.
