    There is a LOT of misinformation out there concerning Question 1, the voter suppression question that will be on the ballot THIS November. Help spread the word about how this is written to make voting more difficult for voters by restricting access to absentee ballots, a method of voting that thousands of Mainers use every election.

    Visit the Save Maine Absentee Voting site to learn more. Then speak to your friends, your family, your neighbors, and even strangers! And write a letter to the editor-there are letters weekly playing this down! This is part of the MAGA playbook and we can stop it!

How about helping to organize events, such as rallies and overpass actions or be a peacekeeper? Volunteer with Indivisible Bangor! We have had a huge influx of new members these past few months and to keep up, YOUR skills, connections, and input are needed! Weekly meetings on Zoom and monthly in-person.

    And now to the Mid Maine Indivisible morning Call to Action!

    ~~~
    Hi Folks, it’s the last Tuesday in August. Still no real rain. No outside fires, but some chances however to fan the flames of resistance.
    Susan Collins is coming to Searsport at 10 am TODAY.  Let’s show up in big numbers to protest her actions in the Senate. We are all invited to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of downtown roadwork.  10 am with Susan and town council members in front of Edwards and by the new Searsport Planters. Indivisible Waldo County is organizing the protest. (Do not be surprised if she no-shows once she gets wind of this – it doesn’t matter – the public anger shown at the protest will get coverage.)
    If you can’t get to Searsport this morning do one thing today.  Watch Robert Reich’s “Five Ways to Fight Facism”,
    it’s 4.5 minutes long and gives you a great outline of ways to be active and effective.
    TODAY’S ACTION (s)
    • Get on over to Searsport and show your anger at Collin’s response to Trump’s Budget Bill: So, we’re cutting ribbons at a road project that Susan helped fund, what about cuts to SNAP, Medicare, Green Energy, Healthcare for Vets, School lunch programs, food banks, purchases from farmers, rental assistance for seniors, weather forecasting, national parks, cancer care and cancer research, prescription drug benefits, Maine Care and the affordable care act that will result in 13.7 million people losing health insurance by 2034 including nearly 51,000 Mainers, leading to higher costs and rural hospitals closing!
    • Watch Robert Reich’s Five Ways to Fight Facism on Youtube: This is a great summation of what we can do in the face of the destruction we are witnessing. Go here to watch, take notes, and invite your friends to watch it as well!
    • From Yesterday
    • Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics:  Why? This position is supposed to be non-partisan so economists can base their plans for the economy on it. Antoni has made it clear he is a Trump loyalist, and will slant the figures he uses to show that Trump and Co. are doing a great job. Go here for a statement from the friends of the Bureau of Labor Statistics which lays out in non-partisan language how Senators should assess Antoni’s nomination.
    • Contact Avelo Airlines and ask them to “Drop the Deportation Contract” they currently have with ICE: Ground Avelo has all the information you need to call, email Avelo, and/or participate in an action at the Portland Airport – check with Cumberland Indivisible on this – they are planning actions on this issue. No airlines should be making money off deporting our neighbors and friends. Let’s stop this.
    • Set up a meeting with one member of our Congressional Delegation: I know it feels like it’s futile with some of them, but you never know where the tipping point is on any of these issues.Here are some of the guidelines that Indivisible Mid Maine uses for our meetings, and here is a list of some meetings we have organized and topics covered. Please contact Bonnie if you are interested in hearing more.
    • Get a poster/chalking campaign going in your neighborhood – there are telephone poles everywhere:  Indivisible Cumberland County has some great ones you can use – click here – this will lead you to an email you can send to Jennifer Morris. We have attached their poster ideas at the bottom of this email. Contact Karen for the Mid Maine Poster Campaign.Design your own signs and/or get an artist to design some for you. Remember poles belong to CMP and overtly political statements may be subject to legal action, however they seem to be ok with lost cats and dogs. Audacity in the Midcoast has called for Chalking “Truth Matters” on every public surface – roads and sidewalks!
    • Keep your calendar open for Labor Day Mass Action September 1st! Actions in Bangor, Waterville, Portland and many other locations; Go to Activate Maine for statewide actions.
    • If you are in the Mid Coast area consider joining Audacity – learn more here.
    • Stand Up for Palestinan Rights:  For events going on around the state in support of the Palestinian people go to Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights here.
    • If you know your Maine Representative or Senator is supportive of making ICE accountable in Maine,  ask them to join with Representative Cassie Julia to put in a bill to ensure proper identification of ICE agents acting in Maine. Lawmakers in California have introduced legislation requiring the identity and affiliation of ICE agents to be displayed while interacting with the public.
    AUGUSTA- The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) will host a ribbon cutting in Searsport to mark the completion of the Searsport Route 1 Reconstruction on Tuesday, August 26. Media are invited to attend as U.S. Senator Susan Collins, MaineDOT, and local representatives will be on-hand to give remarks and answer questions about the project and its impact on the region. The Searsport Route 1 Reconstruction is a $17.8 million investment that rebuilt a key stretch of Route 1 from Savage Road north to Station Avenue. One of the project’s major upgrades includes the addition of a center left-turn lane between Trundy Road and Station Avenue, designed to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for motorists. The project also closed critical gaps in the pedestrian network, creating a continuous and accessible sidewalk route through downtown Searsport. To further improve walkability, MaineDOT partnered with the Town of Searsport to install new pedestrian lighting and brick sidewalks. The project was made possible in part by $9.2 million in Congressionally Directed Spending.
    From Mid Maine Indivisible-
    Action Friday August 22nd: Support Cumberland Indivisible Actions Regarding Deportation Flights + Keep the Pressure on Antoni Nomination
    Hi Folks, it’s Friday, and I’ve been unplugged all week.  I highly recommend this if you haven’t tried it – even for smaller amounts of time.
    Following up on the Avelo Airlines, Portland City Council has just accepted a Federal Grant of 21 Million Dollars which has a stipulation that the airport needs to cooperate with ICE. This is happening in airports around the country out of which kidnapped immigrants are getting flown to “detention centers”.  Check in with Cumberland Indivisible to see what actions they are planning around this. More on this news here.
    From Monday
    Avelo Airlines, flying now out of PORTLAND, Maine,  has a contract with ICE to deport folks who ICE has abducted. There is no due process for these people. They are flown to unknown countries and detention centers. Avelo is making big money off this unethical and fundamentally unconstitutional agreement. We need to make this a money-loser for Avelo. Take the “I Won’t Fly Avelo” pledge.  Call their leadership and tell them to drop the Deportation Contract with ICE. Deportations are happening now.  People are getting flown out of  Portland, Maine.  Let’s stop this. (This is a major campaign of National Indivisible)
    From last week:
    Consider putting up posters in your neck of the woods.  I have attached ideas for them from Jennifer, Cumberland Indivisible below.  If you don’t want to use paper, consider the Chalking Project proposed by Audacity. Chalk “Truth Matters” on public roads and sidewalks.
    Oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics. This nomination is still up in the air and a date for the Senate Vote on this has not been set yet!
    TODAY’S ACTION (s)
    • Contact Cumberland Indivisible to join actions around Portland Airport Deportation Situation: Indivisible has made stopping Avelo’s deportation flights a priority. Cumberland Indivisible should have a plan as well for working with the airport to stop cooperation with ICE.
    • Contact Avelo Airlines and ask them to “Drop the Deportation Contract” they currently have with ICE: Ground Avelo has all the information you need to call, email Avelo, and/or participate in an action at the Portland Airport – check with Cumberland Indivisible on this – they are planning actions on this issue. No airlines should be making money off deporting our neighbors and friends. Let’s stop this.
    • Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics:  Why? This position is supposed to be non-partisan so economists can base their plans for the economy on it. EJ has made it clear he is a Trump loyalist, and will slant the figures he uses to show that Trump and Co. are doing a great job. Go here for a statement from the friends of the Bureau of Labor Statistics which lays out in non-partisan language how Senators should assess Antoni’s nomination.
    • Set up a meeting with one member of our Congressional Delegation: I know it feels like it’s futile with some of them, but you never know where the tipping point is on any of these issues. Here are some of the guidelines that Indivisible Mid Maine uses for our meetings, and here is a list of some meetings we have organized and topics covered. Please contact Bonnie if you are interested in hearing more.
    • Get a poster/chalking campaign going in your neighborhood – there are telephone poles everywhere:  Indivisible Cumberland County has some great ones you can use – click here – this will lead you to an email you can send to Jennifer Morris. We have attached their poster ideas at the bottom of this email. Contact Karen for the Mid Maine Poster Campaign.Design your own signs and/or get an artist to design some for you. Remember poles belong to CMP and overtly political statements may be subject to legal action, however they seem to be ok with lost cats and dogs. Audacity in the Midcoast has called for Chalking “Truth Matters” on every public surface – roads and sidewalks!
    • Start a Poster/Chalking Campaign in Your Neighborhood! Go here for ideas and check in with Karen about a postering campaign in Mid Maine on this Tuesday at the Waterville UU Church.  Poster ideas also attached below.
    • Go to Activate Maine for statewide actions.
    • If you are in the Mid Coast area consider joining Audacity – learn more here.
    • Stand Up for Palestinan Rights:  For events going on around the state in support of the Palestinian people go to Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights here.
    • If you know your Maine Representative or Senator is supportive of making ICE accountable in Maine,  ask them to join with Representative Cassie Julia to put in a bill to ensure proper identification of ICE agents acting in Maine. Lawmakers in California have introduced legislation requiring the identity and affiliation of ICE agents to be displayed while interacting with the public.
    • Indivisible Actions – Register HereFor the One Million Rising action – register here  and watch the first session here. Watch the second session here.  Watch the Third Session hereConsider hosting a Community Resistance meeting using Indivisible outline and guidelines.
    • Keep your calendar open for Labor Day Mass Action September 1st!
    “Times are difficult globally; awakening is no longer a luxury or an ideal. It’s becoming critical. We don’t need to add more depression, more discouragement, or more anger to what’s already here. It’s becoming essential that we learn how to relate sanely with difficult times. The earth seems to be beseeching us to connect with joy and discover our innermost essence. This is the best way that we can benefit others.” ~ Pema Chodron
    ~~A message of hope from The Democracy Docket that’s been passed along by a friend here at Indivisible Bangor:
    What Gives Me Hope
    It usually comes as a question: What gives you hope? Sometimes it is more of a demand: Tell me something hopeful!
    Everywhere I turn — in person and online, from lawyers to retirees, activists to students — people are searching for hopeful words about the future of democracy. I know what they want. They want me to say that I have special knowledge, a hidden plan, some inside information that will assure them that this nightmare will end. They want to hear that democracy will survive Trump, that our institutions will hold, that it will all turn out okay in the end.
    The assumption seems to be that I would only be fighting for democracy in court — speaking out in the media, angering Trump and his enablers, doing everything I can to defend our elections — if I were sure we would prevail.
    If only that were the case.
    Here is the truth: there is no secret plan to defend American democracy. There is no hidden set of tactics that those of us in the pro-democracy movement are waiting to unveil at the right moment. Despite the paranoid fantasies of the right wing, I do not possess any magic power to bend courts to my will. I am not playing a clever game of chess where victory is guaranteed if we just wait for the right move.
    For some, hope is an emotion of optimism, a bright faith that things will inevitably improve. As a candidate, President Barack Obama defined hope as “that thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it and to work for it and to fight for it.” It was a stirring definition, one that inspired millions. But I didn’t buy it then, and I don’t buy it now.
    For me, hope is not a feeling of certainty about the future. It is born of the knowledge that we may do everything we can without the assurance that it will be enough. Hope is accepting that the arc of the moral universe may not bend toward justice — even if all of us push with everything we have. Hope is recognizing that evil and injustice can prevail even if we, as Obama suggested, “reach for it, and work for it, and fight for it.”
    In other words, hope is not a naïve emotion. It is a sober responsibility. Hope is what we do when the odds are long and the options limited. It is the stubborn act of trying when despair feels easier. Rather than a passive optimism, hope is the commitment of those who believe they can make a difference, however small.
    What gives me hope are the lawyers who walk into courtrooms every day, fighting for justice in the face of governments with unlimited resources that want to deny it. These lawyers do not know if they will win; often, they know they will lose. But they keep showing up because the rule of law depends on it.
    I am hopeful when I see everyday Americans stand on street corners, in the heat of summer or the cold of winter, holding signs to protest Trump’s cruel treatment of migrants. They cannot reverse policy alone, but their visible witness matters. It reminds all of us that cruelty is not normal, that silence only benefits the oppressor.
    I feel hope every time an opposition leader — elected or not — stands up to Trump and the GOP, making their efforts to subvert our elections just a little more difficult. Each obstruction slows the march toward authoritarianism. Each act of courage buys time for others to organize, resist, and fight back.
    Most importantly, I have hope when people refuse the cool cynicism of despair. Despair is peddled by the right to convince us that resistance is futile, and it is echoed by too many on the left who would rather sit back and say all is lost. Cynicism asks nothing of us; hope demands everything. When people choose to act rather than surrender, that is what keeps democracy alive.
    Will these efforts be enough? Will the cynics be proven right in the end? I don’t know. None of us does. But our job — all of our jobs — is to ignore the temptation of despair and to keep fighting authoritarianism every single day, in every way we can.
    For me, that fight takes many forms. It means helping elect Democrats who will stand up to Trump and defend our institutions. It means litigating to protect free and fair elections for all Americans. It means speaking out — on social media, on television, on YouTube – to educate people about the risks we face and the steps we can take together.
    It also means growing Democracy Docket, the pro-democracy media company I started in 2020. I created Democracy Docket to provide accurate information, analysis and opinion at a time when misinformation was spreading faster than truth. Every article we publish, every lawsuit we explain, every policy we break down for readers is part of the work of hope: giving people the tools to understand the fight for democracy and the confidence to join it.
    So, when people ask me what gives me hope, my answer is simple: you do. Every person who refuses to look away. Every lawyer who files a brief. Every protester who shows up. Every voter who refuses to quietly surrender their rights. Each of you gives me hope — not because victory is certain, but precisely because it is not.
    Hope is not a promise. It is not a guarantee of success. It is the courage to act in the face of uncertainty. And right now, in this fragile moment for our democracy, it is the most important responsibility we share.
  • Action 158 November ‘25 voting
    Background:  Now that the “dog days of summer” (1) are officially over and the campaign season is just beginning, we defenders of democracy have our work cut out for us for the next two months!
    November 4, 2025
     is the date for municipal general elections and the state referendum vote. Registration deadline by mail is Tuesday October 14. In-person, the deadline is on voting day, but it’s best to register beforehand, and also to check to be sure you are still registered.  Online registration is here: https://registertovote.sos.maine.gov.  Up for our vote on Nov. 4 is Referendum Question 1, which MUST be defeated.  It’s clearly designed as a voter suppression measure.  The Question is titled “An Act to Require an Individual to Present Photographic Identification for the Purpose of Voting” but this title is highly misleading, as this is not by any means all that the vote entails. The measure will severely curtail absentee voting, which in 2024 was the voting method of choice of 40% of Mainers, including 60% of Seniors.  Question 1 particularly disenfranchises people with disabilities, rural voters, seniors, and working people.  Among its provisions: it prevents you from ordering your ballot by phone, or having your family member or caregiver pick one up for you.
    The actual language on the referendum question reads “Do you want to change Maine election laws to eliminate two days of absentee voting, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities, ban prepaid postage on absentee ballot return envelopes, limit the number of drop boxes, require voters to show certain photo ID before voting, and make other changes to our elections?”  Several of those “other changes” are highly problematic.  Download and read the complete language here:| Legislation (Word)  The whole bit about requiring a photo ID is a sneaky and underhanded red herring (2).  There is an infinitesimal amount of voter fraud in Maine, never remotely enough to change election outcomes (3).  The proponents are cynically using the requirement for a photo ID as a sanitizing cover-up to make voting harder for anyone who might tend to vote for a Democrat.  We shouldn’t fall for this ruse, nor let our friends and neighbors fall for it.
    Also up for our vote on Nov. 4 are MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.  You can have a huge impact here!  For many years the right wingers have recognized the power in motivating the grass roots.  We defenders of democracy must do the same.  No longer can we take for granted that the nation will be governed responsibly without any effort on our part.  We have to get out of our comfort zone and recruit, or volunteer ourselves, for local office.
    Actions:
    You can help defeat Question 1 by:
    You can help recruit people for local office! Focus on town elections.  For instance, Ellsworth has two school board seats and  three city council seats up (perennial and deeply unqualified candidate John Linnehan has apparently taken out papers). Find out what is coming up in YOUR town and recruit a good candidate!
    Urgency:  Make a plan of what you are going to do, and start implementing it right after Labor Day.
They’ll add the money to our kitty, mail out a regular check, and the money goes to our bank account to help with our expenses! You can find them here! Thank you!
    And please check out the latest Action from Hancock County Democrats, Action 157. “Do something Sept. 1.” Past actions are listed here.
