Welcome to all the new members on our mailing list! Here is today’s call to action from us at Indivisible Bangor, followed by the great list of important actions from our friends at Mid Maine Indivisible. AND new actions from Hancock Country Democrats (Action 164) and Bold Coast Civic Alliance (9/8).
Indivisible Bangor remains committed to free speech and non-violence in all of our actions. Any life lost to gun violence is a tragedy with countless ripples affecting the lives of loved ones and our greater society.
We are horrified to learn of the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk. Political violence has no place in democracy. The foundation of democracy rests on the principle that differences can be debated vigorously, but peacefully, without intimidation or acts of violence. In America, no one should be targeted with violence for their beliefs or political affiliations. Indivisible stands united in absolute opposition to all forms of political violence, without reservation, and condemns this horrific act. We extend our condolences to his family and his loved ones during this difficult time.

CARE OVER CUTS: REINING IN THE TRUMP CHAOS
Trump’s authoritarian rise is being funded by our tax dollars. The national Indivisible Project has everything you need to know about passing a federal budget by September 30th; how Republicans and Democrats must rein in Trump’s regime, protect access to healthcare, and take away his slush funds for terrorizing our communities; and what you can do.
One way or another, the Trump regime’s weaponization of federal power – terrorizing communities, ripping away life-saving government services, and showering tax giveaways on the wealthy and well-connected at the expense of people already struggling to get by – must be stopped. Learn more about this fight below and take action to demand your Members of Congress take away Trump’s blank check to visit devastation on our communities, economy, and democracy.

The next Save Maine Absentee Voting Canvass in Brewer, Sunday September 14th, 2025, and we need your help! We need to educate Maine voters that Question 1 on November’s ballot is about a whole lot more than just “Voter I.D.,” but also includes many more voter suppression provisions. And check out the latest Hancock County Action Alert on this!
Speaking of Save Maine Absentee Voting, there is a LOT of misinformation out there concerning Question 1, the voter suppression question that will be on the ballot THIS November.
Help spread the word about how this is written to make voting more difficult for voters by restricting access to absentee ballots, a method of voting that thousands of us Mainers use every election.
Visit the Save Maine Absentee Voting site to learn more. Then speak to your friends, your family, your neighbors, and even strangers! And write a letter to the editor-there are letters weekly playing this down, calling it “common sense” legislation! This is part of the MAGA playbook and we can stop it!
Maine Rising Up – Tuesday, September 16th, 2025, 6:00 pm
Making Good Trouble with Ezra Levin – A Maine Indivisible Fall Kickoff event in Gorham, Maine!! Join Indivisible groups from across Maine to launch a bold new campaign this fall centered around the principle of non-cooperation / non-compliance—a form of lawful, nonviolent resistance that refuses to enable or normalize authoritarian rule.
Graham Platner in Brewer Thursday, October 9th
“We’ll be at the Eastern Maine Labor Council Hall from 6:00pm-7:00pm on. I hope you’ll come and check out this movement we’re building to defeat Susan Collins and her multi-billionaire backers. Come out, ask questions, and bring a friend or three. I’ll see you there.”
Make Some Calls!
It’s mentioned a few times in these newsletters about calling your representatives in Washington, D.C. It’s one of the most important things we can do and it’s so easy! The telephone numbers to the four Maine representatives in Washington are always listed in this newsletter, but for those of you reading this who live in another state, the site 5calls.org is the best way to find the contact info for your reps. AND, they have a list of the important issues to discuss when calling. It’s a super source and it’s easy to remember! Call early and often!
If you are more comfortable with sending emails to our Maine Congressional delegation in Washington, visit our Direct Action page for the links that go right to their email option.
California Redistricting Question-they need your help!
The California redistricting question, Proposition 50, will be on their ballot this November. This is intended to be a voter-approved plan to counter the Trump-directed gerrymandering that Gov. Abbot enacted in Texas to give Republicans five more seats in the House. Missouri legislators are looking to do a similar action.
If you’d like to help, there are phone banking opportunities! Help out our fellow Americans in California with their “Yes on 50” campaign from the comfort of your home here in beautiful Maine!
One of our members has started a letter/petition to the President of the University of Maine at Orono to preserve their DEI policies.
“As students, faculty, staff, and alumni of The University of Maine at Orono, and people who support universities maintaining their DEI policies, we urge you to do your utmost to preserve the DEI policies at the University of Maine at Orono. We understand the complications and dangers involved in doing so, and we also appreciate your efforts to continue these policies while changing DEI names to avoid negative consequences from the Trump administration. However, we are concerned that as pressures mount there may be more motivation to agree to changes in DEI policies in addition to name changes, and we are concerned that this would compromise the basic values that are at the foundations of this university. We appreciate the statements of Interim Dean of Students Andrea Gifford in her reassurance that the university’s DEI policies are not changing in spite of the name changes, and it is our hope that this continues.”
The petition is open to signatures from anyone supportve of maintaining DEI policies at the university, regardless of whether or not you are affiliated with the school. Please sign! And please sign the second petition that applies to all universities in the U.S.
We are on Blue Sky!
Check us out on this social media site that is similar to that other one that has changed hands recently, but with less nonsense! Follow us! Invite your friends!
The ACLU Maine has a “Know Your Rights” plan for students going back to school. “Politicians are attacking students’ and teachers’ rights throughout the country, including here in Maine – but as the Supreme Court ruled in 1969, students do not ‘shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.’” Click the button for these important details.
We have an easy way to donate to Indivisible Bangor. Drop off your returnable bottles and cans to Ohio Street Redemption in Bangor and tell them to put it on the account of Dave Cox. They’ll add the money to our kitty, mail out a regular check, and the money goes to our bank account to help with our expenses! You can find them here!
****Be sure the attendant writes down “Dave Cox” or “Indivisible Bangor” because several donations have not been credited. Thank you!****
And you can donate here, too! Donations help pay for supplies, website, outreach, and to fund the many upcoming actions in Maine.
And please check out the latest Action from Hancock County Democrats, “Action 164. Vaccines! Comment!” Past actions are listed here.
Lastly, our friends at the Bold Coast Civic Alliance have drawn up a super handy list of items we can address (9/3). Check it out here!
Thank you for all you do! – Dave from Indivisible Bangor
And now to the Mid Maine Indivisible morning Call to Action!

Action Thursday September 11th: Stop Sending Military Troops and National Guard to Our Cities
Hi Folks, it’s Thursday and For the Heart!
The administration’s deployment of US military troops and National Guard to fight a phantom crime wave that appears to be happening only in Blue Cities (Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, LA) is unconstitutional and designed to terrorize immigrant communities, and anyone that is not white with English as their second language.
This is a prelude to military presence at polling places next fall during the 2026 elections. Call or write our Congressional Delegation and ask them to speak out against this clear violation of the President’s powers – there is no emergency, there is no crime wave, there is only blatant executive overreach.
From Yesterday
Call or write your Congressional Representatives, and ask them to vote against funding the upcoming Appropriations Bill. This is a chance for our politicians to stand strong against the criminality and corruption going on in the Executive Branch, in our names, with our tax dollars.
Call or write Susan Collins and Angus King asking them to pledge now to vote to force the release of these files when the issue comes to the Senate.
Consider volunteering for Graham Platner’s campaign for US Senate. Go here.
Mark Saturday, October 18th for the next nationwide mass No Kings2 rally. Start talking to a young person you know to get them engaged in the resistance.
For the Heart
For Your Heart this Eleventh Week of Summer:
In Asian psychology there is a state of mind that is honored, Great Love, Great Sadness. Love (and it can be a practice) is so big that it can hold sadness. “Bring me your sadness, your pain.” Great Love says to Sadness. To be strong enough to hold pain, is an amazing thing. It takes practice, start with the small sadness, such as your toothpaste is empty and work up, to larger sadnesses – actions of self, actions of others, and so forth. If we can be centered in Great Love, Great Sadness, we can act from a place of clarity.

To Be of Use
The people I love the best
jump into work head first
without dallying in the shallows
and swim off with sure strokes almost out of sight.
They seem to become natives of that element,
the black sleek heads of seals
bouncing like half submerged balls.
I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart,
who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience,
who strain in the mud and the muck to move things forward,
who do what has to be done, again and again.
I want to be with people who submerge
in the task, who go into the fields to harvest
and work in a row and pass the bags along,
who stand in the line and haul in their places,
who are not parlor generals and field deserters
but move in a common rhythm
when the food must come in or the fire be put out.
The work of the world is common as mud.
Botched, it smears the hands, crumbles to dust.
But the thing worth doing well done
has a shape that satisfies, clean and evident.
Greek amphoras for wine or oil,
Hopi vases that held corn, are put in museums
but you know they were made to be used.
The pitcher cries for water to carry
and a person for work that is real.

TODAY’S ACTION (s)
- Write or call our Congress people and ask them to speak out against military deployment in Blue Cities: Let’s face it, this is a pure power grab aimed at terrorizing immigrant communities, and setting up a power dynamic that the Executive branch can do whatever it wishes. See 5calls.org for more information.
- From Earlier this Week
- Write or call our Congress people and ask them to vote against funding the upcoming appropriations bill: Let’s shut it down and make demands that can be met swiftly by the Executive branch. This could be a tipping point for Congress to use its anti-authoritarian power. For more background go to 5calls.org.
- Write or Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to pledge now to force the release of the Epstein Files: The House should pass this effort at the end of the month and then it will go to the Senate where progressive measures have gone to die. This is an issue that has the administration on its back foot – we need to push on it for moral as well as political reasons. For more info. on releasing the files go to 5calls.org.
- Call our Congress People and ask them to demand that the CDC follow science and change its vaccine guidance: Currently they are only advising that 65+ folks and people with immune compromised conditions get the vaccine. Go to 5calls.org for the details.
- Call or email Governor Mills to form a health alliance with other New England states to give Vaccine Guidance: Washington, California and Oregon have done this; it could help to maintain the health and herd immunity of our populations in the NorthEast. This may be in the works – let’s support it!
- Consider volunteering and/or donating to Graham Platner’s campaign for US Senate: He is the real deal. A progressive Mainer who will take on Susan Collins with no fear. Volunteer/donate here.
- Call Senators King and Collins and ask them to oppose the nomination of EJ Antoni for Commissioner of Labor Statistics: Why? This position is supposed to be non-partisan so economists can base their plans for the economy on it. Antoni has made it clear he is a Trump loyalist, and will slant the figures he uses to show that Trump and Co. are doing a great job. Go here for the five calls.org piece on this.
- Consider Boycotting American Companies that support the Israeli Military in Gaza and Illegal Israeli Settlements on the West Bank. Go here to get a list of companies to boycott.
- Start thinking about how we can involve young people in the resistance. High Schoolers, College Age folk have not bought in to the movement in any significant numbers. Bring one young person to No Kings2 mass rally October 18th.
- Ask Janet Mills to join other Blue States to call for a redistricting of Maine so that Democratic candidates have the edge in the second district, if and only if other states join Texas in redistricting to the Republican advantage. For talking points on this go here. For a toolkit on this for red and blue states go here.
- Start a Poster/Chalking Campaign in Your Neighborhood! Go here for ideas and check in with Karen about a postering campaign in Mid Maine.
- If you are in the Mid Coast area consider joining Audacity – learn more here.
- Note: September 14th 2 -4pm at the Mount View High School, 577 Mount View Road, Thorndike, ME 04986. ALL FOUR DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR will be on a panel facilitated by Murray Carpenter. To register go here.
- For statewide NoKings2 Actions go to the Activate Maine calendar, and Mobilize to see if there is an event planned near you for October 18th. If there isn’t one within an hour’s drive plan one for your community!!

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from
those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending
money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This
is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”
